Sundubu (soft tofu stew) for the last dinner of our Sokcho trip! You can't visit Gangwon-do without handmade tofu, haha. The portions were huge, and we finished it all off with the pot rice that comes as a default side — here's the review!

The menu at Yetgoeul Sundubu and what we ordered

Here's Yetgoeul Sundubu's diverse menu! There are various sundubu dishes and even hot pots, so it seems great for finding something to your taste. We picked chodang sundubu, abalone jjamppong sundubu, and perilla-oil pan-fried tofu, haha!

Cauldron rice that comes with every sundubu order

First up, Yetgoeul Sundubu's pot rice! It seems like pot rice is included by default whenever you order a sundubu dish. It'd be great to bring your parents here!!!!

And here's our table, filled with dishes! The visuals were insane... the table was practically bending under the weight, haha.

The set table and the self-serve side dish bar

Yetgoeul Sundubu's basic table setting came out neat and tidy! The side dishes were really varied too, and you could refill anything running low at the self-serve bar.

Abalone jjamppong sundubu: packed with seafood and made for a drink

Second, Yetgoeul Sundubu's abalone jjamppong sundubu! It had two whole abalones plus loads of seafood inside. So exciting!

It had tender squid, mussels, baby octopus, and shrimp inside, and the spicy jjamppong flavor was so good! This is... hangover-cure or drinking-buddy food, honestly, haha.

Look at these big chunks of trimmed abalone from Yetgoeul Sundubu! They cut it up nicely for easy eating, and the abalones were pretty big, which I loved.

Large abalone trimmed for easy eating

The soft abalone was delicious on its own, and putting buckwheat pancake on top of the sundubu was tasty too, haha. My boyfriend was busy mixing his rice into it too, haha.

Chodang sundubu: pure tofu flavour, no soy sauce needed

Third, Yetgoeul Sundubu's chodang sundubu! Other tables were ordering it without any hesitation, so I followed along, haha. It came out as a huge bowl of super silky sundubu!

They recommended tasting it as-is rather than adding soy sauce. So I ate it together with the rice and basic side dishes, and it was really, really good!!!! They said the tofu is truly handmade, and maybe that's why it had a richer, more savory flavor.

Default white and pink pan-fried tofu

The pan-fried tofu that comes standard was white tofu and pink tofu, haha. Dip it in the soy sauce that comes alongside, or wrap it in kimchi for a tofu-kimchi combo!

Bijitchigae, the free side dish that steals the rice

Fourth, Yetgoeul Sundubu's bijitchigae (soybean pulp stew)! It's just one of the default side dishes, but it had been so long since I'd had it that I couldn't stop reaching for it, haha.

Bijitchigae side dish with sour kimchi

It's bijitchigae with chopped sour kimchi mixed in — this is where the real rice-stealer was hiding, haha. It also went great with the pan-fried tofu!!!!

Perilla-oil pan-fried tofu: thick slices with a different aroma

Fifth, Yetgoeul Sundubu's perilla-oil pan-fried tofu! The perilla oil aroma hit as soon as it arrived!!!!! And the tofu came out so thick!!!!

Plump and full, and with the perilla oil aroma coating it, there was no way this could be bad! And most of all, the inside was so moist and soft... genuinely good enough to eat plain, I think both adults and kids would love it!

You can't skip the kimchi pairing with Yetgoeul Sundubu's pan-fried tofu~ It's a perfect match with kimchi, and my boyfriend piled on some fermented squid too.

Finishing the meal with nurungji sungnyung

To finish, Yetgoeul Sundubu's nurungji sungnyung (scorched rice tea)! Sipping the warm sungnyung cleans up your palate nicely, and that's the end, haha.

Nurungji sungnyung served to finish the meal

Even though we were already full, it was so good we ended up cleaning our plates completely! The side dishes were plentiful too, giving it a homemade meal feel — we left really satisfied!!!! How about Yetgoeul Sundubu, the jjamppong sundubu spot in Nohak-dong, Sokcho!?
