I visited Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun (순희네빈대떡 닭한마리 동대문본점), a well-known chicken hot pot spot in Dongdaemun Market ✨.

On Boknal, the hottest days of summer, I was craving a hot chicken dish, so I went for dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) for lunch. The clear, deep broth and tender chicken were restorative and filling. The restaurant has far more than chicken hot pot, including yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef bibimbap), bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) and oksam bulgogi, so it was great to go with several people and share a bit of everything ·ᴗ·.

The restaurant sits in the Dongdaemun chicken hot pot alley. The big red sign is visible from far away, so it was easy to find.

Menu photos and signs by the entrance make it easy to spot. It's also fairly close to Jongno 5-ga Station, so it would be a nice stop while browsing Dongdaemun Market.

Is Sunhuine Bindaetteok good for groups at Dongdaemun Market? 200 seats on two floors

Step inside and the place is bigger than you'd expect. There are seats on the 1st floor and the 2nd floor, about 200 in total, so I'd recommend it for groups visiting Dongdaemun Market!

The restaurant feels well kept overall, so we could eat in a clean, comfortable space.

Every table is set up for simmering chicken hot pot, and the walls are covered in scribbles, which gives it a homey vibe haha.

There's also a self-serve bar on one side with side dishes that go well with chicken hot pot, such as kimchi, pickled onions and cabbage.

Besides chicken hot pot, the menu is really varied. The signature options are a whole chicken or a half chicken, and there are many add-ons (sari) too: rice cakes, kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), vegetable porridge, potatoes, mushrooms and more. I liked that a half chicken is available. When there are only two of you, or you want to try other dishes as well, you can order the half.

There were so many choices beyond chicken hot pot: yukhoe tangtangi (hand-chopped raw beef), nakji tangtangi (raw octopus), yukhoe, yukhoe bibimbap, wang galbitang (giant short rib soup), mung bean pancake, raw pork belly and more. Meal dishes include meat patties, dak gomtang (chicken soup), dakgaejang (spicy chicken soup), yukgaejang (spicy beef soup), jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork), squid stir-fry, mul naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth), bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles) and oksam bulgogi, so it's good for lunch too. I thought it was only a chicken hot pot place, but with everything from yukhoe bibimbap to pancakes and stir-fries, a group can enjoy lots of different dishes!

Our Boknal group lunch: chicken hot pot, yukhoe bibimbap, mung bean pancake and oksam bulgogi

I ordered one and a half chickens of dak hanmari, a premium yukhoe bibimbap, a meat mung bean pancake and oksam bulgogi. The chicken hot pot comes in a big pot, and the owner cut it up in front of us so it was easy to eat.

How do the dak hanmari broth and chicken taste?

The broth is clear but has real depth. It isn't harsh, just clean, and the more I ate, the more I tasted the richness of the chicken stock, which made it perfect restorative food. Inside were rice cakes, napa cabbage, mushrooms, jujubes and more, and with the cabbage it felt a bit like a clear shabu-shabu. The rice cakes were chewy and even better with the broth.

The chicken was tender and chewy too. Even the breast wasn't dry, but soft, which I loved.

How to mix the dak hanmari dipping sauce

You make the dipping sauce yourself, following the recipe posted on the table.

Put minced garlic, soy sauce, dadaegi (spicy seasoning paste) and mustard on a plate, then add vinegar and chives to taste and mix. The sauce I made was sweet and tangy and went really well with the chicken.

Large yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef rice bowl)

I ordered the yukhoe bibimbap in the premium size. First, I liked the generous amount of raw beef. There were plenty of fresh vegetables, so the texture held up nicely once mixed. The beef was chewy, and the gochujang-based sauce made the whole thing nutty and spicy and delicious.

It also has Korean pear in it, adding a bit of sweetness here and there, which made it even better! The nuttiness of the beef, the crunch of the vegetables and the spiciness of the sauce work well together, so it was satisfying as a one-bowl meal. Eaten alongside the clear, clean chicken hot pot, it was a perfect match ·ᴗ·.

Meat mung bean pancake (gogi nokdu bindaetteok)

The meat mung bean pancake here is thick and crispy. The outside is crisp and the inside is moist, so the texture is great. I could also feel the crunch of onion as I ate, so it wasn't greasy and I kept reaching for more.

The pancake is good on its own, but it was a perfect match with the pickled onions served alongside. Pairing the crispy pancake with the tangy onions cuts the richness and makes it taste cleaner.

Oksam bulgogi: spicy squid and pork stir-fry

The oksam bulgogi (stir-fried squid and pork) comes with plump squid and meat together. It also has lots of vegetables like onion and green onion, which made it easy to pick at together, and the savory, spicy sauce had soaked in well.

The squid and meat were big and plump, with a great texture.

Order the oksam bulgogi and a bowl of rice comes with it. The sauce is good on its own, but mixed into white rice it's a total rice thief (so good you keep eating rice) ·ᴗ·.
