Gangnam bar with outdoor seats and Yeongdong Samhap: Yeongdong Pocha

After working out with my older sister, low blood sugar suddenly hit us... And really, nothing raises blood sugar like beer, right?

Looking for somewhere near Sinnonhyeon Station where we could have a casual drink with an outdoor-bar vibe, I went back to my regular spot, Yeongdong Pocha (영동포차). It has indoor tables too, but the weather was cool that day, so we sat outside.

Where is Yeongdong Pocha in Nonhyeon?

Yeongdong Pocha is on the second floor of a building at 51 Hakdong-ro 2-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. One of its features is that it offers both indoor space and outdoor seating.

I chose the outdoor seats over indoors that day, and with the weather being pleasantly cool lately, eating outside just put me in an even better mood. If you are looking for an outdoor bar near Sinnonhyeon Station, take note!

What is Yeongdong Samhap?

The menu we ordered that day was Yeongdong Samhap.

Yeongdong Samhap comes with sweet shrimp, uni (sea urchin roe), crab innards, yuk sashimi (Korean-style raw beef), and avocado. It costs ₩53,000.

The name might first make you think of a typical meat samhap platter, but Yeongdong Pocha's Yeongdong Samhap pairs seafood with yuk sashimi. It was a good choice for a day when we wanted to sample several things little by little instead of eating just one dish the whole time.

Personally, I thought this kind of platter went really well as drinking food. You can eat every component separately or pair them together, so it was fun trying different combinations from one plate.

And then, the complimentary dish came out ♥️

They gave us tomatoes sprinkled with sugar on the house, which I absolutely loved.

And what we drank with it that day was Terra beer. Beer after a workout really is honey-sweet.

I also thought soju would go well with a snack platter containing lots of ingredients like Yeongdong Samhap. But ahh, a beer outside was just so, so refreshing.

After trying it myself

What I liked most that day was not just the taste, but the composition of the menu.

Having yuk sashimi and seafood together meant I did not get tired of one flavor too quickly, and it was nice to change up the combinations little by little while drinking. Above all, eating outside made my satisfaction with the food rise right along with the atmosphere.

Even with the same menu, eating at an indoor table feels distinctly different from eating it outside with a beer. I totally recommend the outdoor seats in weather like this.

Who would enjoy it?

I think it would suit anyone looking for a relaxed place to drink in Nonhyeon. You will probably be especially satisfied if you like sharing several drinking snacks with friends or acquaintances, or outdoor seats with a casual pocha (Korean pub) atmosphere.

Good to know before you visit

Because Yeongdong Pocha is on the second floor, first-time visitors should check its floor location beforehand so they do not walk past after only looking at the building exterior. If you are visiting specifically for the outdoor seating, I recommend considering both the seating situation and the weather.

Since the outdoor-bar atmosphere is one of the fun parts of this place, I think you will enjoy it much more on a day with good weather.
