Spicy gukbap and pork platter in Wolpyeong-dong, Daejeon: Ssangdung

Today I'm introducing Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap Wolpyeong Seonsa Branch in Wolpyeong-dong, Daejeon, a place where you can enjoy everything from gukbap (Korean soup with rice) to boiled pork, sundae (Korean blood sausage) platters, and even samgyeopsal (pork belly). This time I ordered gukbap along with a boiled pork and sundae platter! On top of that they also sell samgyeopsal, so the menu range here is pretty wide haha.

The boiled pork and sundae platter was great for trying a bit of everything, and since they also sell samgyeopsal, it seemed like a good spot for a hearty meal or for visiting with a group to try different dishes. Parking at Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap: use the free street spots out front

This is the back of Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap. If you follow navigation here, it'll guide you to this side, but the parking lot space is a bit tight, so even the restaurant doesn't really recommend using it. There's street parking right in front of the shop, and if a spot is open, you can park there for free all day, they told me! If you're visiting by car, definitely keep this in mind 🚗

Order gukbap, get unlimited sundae, liver, lung, kimchi pancake and noodles

There were lots of notices posted on the shop's window haha. Reading through them slowly, I found that if you order gukbap, sundae, liver, lung, kimchi pancake, and somyeon noodles are all unlimited refill! On top of that, one free egg is provided per person, so it seemed like you could really eat your fill 😊 That's a pretty attractive perk for gukbap lovers haha.

Free extras by how many servings of samgyeopsal you order

There were also perks for people ordering samgyeopsal haha. Order 2 servings and you get free Hangang ramen; order 3 servings and you get free sundae plus Hangang ramen; order 4 servings and you get free old-style patbingsu (shaved ice dessert)! 😊 Also, customers who order samgyeopsal can also eat sundae, so if you want to enjoy sundae along with your samgyeopsal, it's worth asking staff about it haha. The menu you get depends on how many servings of samgyeopsal you order, so keep that in mind when you visit~!

Seating and tablet ordering for company dinners and big groups

The tables are several 4-person tables pushed together, so it looked great for company dinners or group visits! There's also a separate room, so you can eat comfortably in a space apart from other guests haha. I thought it was a good spot for those looking for a group meeting or company dinner venue 😊

You order using the tablet at your table, nice and easy! The restaurant was also running a samgyeopsal perk and a receipt review event haha. The benefits you get for writing a photo review in particular seemed more generous than expected, so I'd definitely recommend taking advantage of the review event if you visit! 😊

The menu: gukbap, boiled pork and sundae, fresh pork belly and dessert

Next up is the meal and side menu! There were various types of gukbap along with boiled pork and sundae dishes haha. We ordered two spicy gukbap and a boiled pork and sundae platter! The portion turned out to be bigger than expected, so if you want to try boiled pork and sundae together, I'd recommend ordering the mini size haha. If you want to try a variety of dishes, ordering the mini size and sharing is a good option too 😊

Next is the raw pork belly and dessert menu! Along with raw pork belly, there were various dessert options too haha. I was especially curious about the fried rice, since apparently it's stir-fried fresh to order! This time I had gukbap and the boiled pork and sundae platter, but I want to try the fried rice too, so I'll definitely come back to try the raw pork belly next time. 😊

Beyond this, there's also everything from cold noodles to bossam (boiled pork) set meals, so you can pick whatever suits your taste haha. With gukbap plus meat dishes, sides, and desserts all on offer, it seemed like a great spot for a group to visit and each pick what they want to eat 😊

Side dishes and the self-serve bar: don't skip the green onion kimchi

I also checked out the side dishes that came with the order! At first, raw chives, cabbage kimchi, and diced radish kimchi came as the basics. Any sides you're missing you can grab yourself at the self-serve bar, so we brought over a plate each of green onion kimchi and chives too haha. These are great sides to pair with gukbap or meat, so grab whatever suits your taste 😊

The self-serve bar has separate corners for gukbap and for samgyeopsal! In particular, the green onion kimchi at the gukbap self-serve bar — you really have to try it!! I hadn't had such delicious green onion kimchi in a while, and I ate it happily haha. Not just the green onion kimchi but all the other kimchi varieties were tasty overall too, so we refilled several times haha. They also said they use domestically sourced ingredients, which made me trust it even more and enjoy it that much more 😊 That said, when using the self-serve bar, remember to only take as much as you'll actually eat haha.

If you order gukbap, sundae, liver, and lung are unlimited refill! As mentioned above, customers who ordered samgyeopsal can ask staff and they'll bring it over directly haha. Right next to that, kimchi pancake batter and eggs were set out! You can use up to one egg per person, and kimchi pancake is unlimited, apparently haha. Just remember the self-serve etiquette: only make as much as you'll actually eat 😊

This time we ordered the boiled pork and sundae platter, so unfortunately we didn't get to try the sundae, liver, and lung separately 😭 That still bugs me a little even now haha. If I visit again, I'll definitely order gukbap next time so I can properly enjoy the sundae, liver, and lung! 😆

Grilling your own kimchi pancake and fried egg at the table

Here's the kimchi pancake and fried egg haha. While making the kimchi pancake I also fried the egg, and I ended up slightly burning the pancake 😂 Still, it was delicious haha. Making it myself was kind of fun, and I got to enjoy it that much more 😊

How spicy is the spicy gukbap? A notch hotter than Shin Ramyun

The spicy gukbap arrived! When it first came out I thought, "huh, the color is more unusual than I expected," haha. But as I stirred the soup a bit and mixed in the chili paste inside, the color gradually shifted into that appetizing spicy-red gukbap color! The look alone made it seem spicy, and I couldn't wait to dig in haha.

Here's the soup after the chili paste was fully mixed in! It looked clean and refreshing from the outside and didn't seem all that spicy, but it turned out to be quite spicy haha. Personally, I'd say it was a bit spicier than Shin Ramyun! I like spicy food so I was very satisfied 😆 There was also a lot of sundae in the broth along with plenty of meat, which made it even better. The soup was both refreshing and spicy, which made it feel perfect as a hangover cure haha.

The boiled pork and sundae platter is huge, and leftovers go home in a box

The boiled pork and sundae platter came out next! With the gukbap already filling us up, plus the kimchi pancake and egg we'd made ourselves, our stomachs were already fairly full early on, but I didn't expect it to come out this generously haha. The boiled pork had a really nice chewy texture, and the sundae was tasty too, packed with vegetables inside! In particular, the sundae had absolutely no unpleasant smell, so we could eat it comfortably without any hesitation 😊 The portion really was generous, so it seemed like a good order for a group to share haha.

I tried the sundae with a bit of salted shrimp on top haha. Eating it that way made me want a drink 🍶 Unfortunately I'd driven that day so I couldn't have any alcohol, but next time I'll leave the car at home and definitely pair it with a drink haha. My stomach was already full but it still tasted so good that I kept reaching for more 😂 In the end I was stuffed to bursting, but it was so good I scraped the plate clean haha.

There was so much boiled pork and sundae left over that a lot went uneaten haha. It seemed a shame to waste it, so I asked for it to be packed up, and they neatly packed it in clean containers and even gave us fresh salted shrimp and salt to go with it! The packaging was really tidy, so we brought it home and enjoyed it with beer haha 🍺 It was nice to eat well at the restaurant and then get to enjoy it again at home 😊

Is Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap in Wolpyeong-dong worth a visit?

From generous gukbap to boiled pork, sundae, and even samgyeopsal, plus making our own kimchi pancake and egg at the self-serve bar, this Daejeon restaurant, Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap Wolpyeong Seonsa Branch, was all the more satisfying for it haha. The portions are generous and the menu is varied, so I'd recommend it to anyone wanting a hearty meal or looking for a spot for a company dinner or group gathering! Next time I'm definitely trying the samgyeopsal, and I plan to properly enjoy the sundae, liver, and lung along with gukbap too haha.
