Seoul noodle sets with fried chicken and tonkatsu: Haekbap Dongguk

I stopped by while looking for somewhere to eat near Chungmuro Station and Dongguk University, and found a spot where you can enjoy a variety of dishes cleanly presented, centered around single-bowl menus — great for lunch or dinner. 😁

What does the name Haekbap mean?

Apparently the name carries the intention of putting care into a single bowl of food and serving the tastiest possible meal — and looking at the menu, it really was put together so you can enjoy a full, satisfying meal.

Is Haekbap Dongguk comfortable for solo diners?

The atmosphere was clean and comfortable, so eating alone didn't feel awkward at all. It suits Chungmuro office workers grabbing lunch or Dongguk University students grabbing a meal just as well as it suits a relaxed visit with a friend or partner. 📍

What we ordered: zaru soba fried chicken set and mazesoba tonkatsu set

On this visit we ordered the zaru soba (chilled buckwheat noodles) fried chicken set and the mazesoba (mixed noodles) tonkatsu set.

First up, the zaru soba fried chicken set! Cool, refreshing zaru soba paired with crispy fried chicken meant one menu covered a range of flavors — I liked that a lot. 🧡

The zaru soba especially was clean and cool, easy to eat without feeling heavy. Dipping the chewy noodles in the special sauce brought out a light but deeply savory flavor, and adding the crispy fried chicken on the side gave the whole thing a much more varied texture.

Noodles alone might have felt a bit underwhelming, but with the fried chicken alongside, it turned into a properly hearty meal.

Mazesoba (brothless mixed noodles) set with tonkatsu

Second was the mazesoba tonkatsu set. Mazesoba is a dish where various ingredients mix in with the noodles for a rich, full flavor. 💛 Mixing the chewy noodles well with the thick seasoning and toppings brought out a proper hit of umami.

The mazesoba in particular had that signature rich, nutty flavor, giving it a completely different charm from the zaru soba.

Adding the tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) that came with it made the whole set quite filling. The combination of crispy breading and tender meat was great, and alternating bites with the mazesoba kept it from feeling too heavy — really enjoyable.

Why the set meal beats ordering noodles alone

Ordering both dishes as sets meant we got to enjoy noodles and fried food together each time, which felt very satisfying. Being able to experience several flavors at once, rather than sticking to one menu item, seems to be the real strength of Haekbap's set menus. Eating lunch in Chungmuro, I sometimes find myself craving the same old Korean food or soup-and-rice, so having zaru soba and mazesoba that day felt like a nice change of pace. 👐
