In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) and bunsik restaurant a 5-minute walk from Sinyongsan Station, open since 2004. A weekend evening visit meant a 40-minute wait behind 13 parties before digging into the Hyeonseonine combo set (₩26,000) at medium spice, with tteokbokki, sundae (blood sausage), assorted fritters, mini gimbap and fish cake, sundae ordered with the liver left out and extra innards mixed in. Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch

Last weekend there was a huge event — the Yeouido Fireworks Festival! I went out with a friend to watch it too. But instead of heading to Yeouido, where the crowds get insane, we went a little further away to Yongsan. The show started at 8pm, so we planned to grab dinner first before watching. We ended up at Hyeonseonine, a famous tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) spot in Yongsan. I'd been craving tteokbokki for a while, and it's such a well-known restaurant in the area.

A 5-minute walk from Exit 6 of Sinyongsan Station, tucked into an alley
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is about a 5-minute walk from Exit 6 of Sinyongsan Station. It's set in a somewhat out-of-the-way alley, so you might wonder "is this even the right street...?" but just follow the map and you'll get there haha. I totally forgot how crowded Yongsan gets on weekends — sure enough, the front of the restaurant was already packed with waiting customers. 🥲

Hyeonseonine stays open later than I expected. Last order is 10:40pm and the dining hall closes at midnight! Good to know if you're looking for a Yongsan tteokbokki spot that's open late.

How long is the weekend evening wait? 13 parties, 40 minutes
As I mentioned, there was quite a wait when we visited on a weekend. Once inside, there's a CatchTable kiosk where you can register for the waitlist. If you have the CatchTable app, you can also queue remotely! There were about 13 parties ahead of us, and after about 40 minutes we were able to get in. Seriously... definitely do the remote queueing before you go. I knew this was a popular Yongsan tteokbokki spot, but I never imagined it would be this popular. 😅

The vibe, seating, and how to order
Inside, the restaurant was packed with customers. It had that cozy, familiar tteokbokki-shop feel. There were two types of seating — regular tables and induction-stove tables — and they seated you based on whether you ordered pan-tteokbokki or hot-pot-style tteokbokki.

You order yourself at the kiosk near the entrance, and pickled radish and dishware are self-serve. I hadn't realized this, but Hyeonseonine has actually been around since 2004 — quite a long-standing Yongsan institution. Over 20 years... that's amazing. ☝🏻

The Hyeonseonine menu board
☑️ The Hyeonseonine menu board The menu was broadly split into two types: pan-tteokbokki and hot-pot-style tteokbokki, and the pan-tteokbokki could also be ordered as a set. There were also individual dishes and side menus, plus drinks and alcohol. Hyeonseonine Combo Set (₩26,000) We ordered the set menu with five components — pan-tteokbokki, sundae (blood sausage), fritters, gimbap, and fish cake.

What to grab at the self-serve bar
We went straight to the self-serve bar and grabbed pickled radish, fried crumbs, soy sauce, salt, and more. Small plates and ladles are all there too — take whatever you need.

Since we both like dipping our fritters and sundae in tteokbokki sauce, we only grabbed pickled radish and fried crumbs. The crumbs were genuinely crispy and delicious — dipping them in the tteokbokki made it even better!

For the hot-pot-style tteokbokki, there were cooking instructions right on the table — just follow along and you'll be fine. The important thing is to stir it well so it doesn't stick or burn — worth remembering! haha

Receipt review event and the free drink for long waits
They were also running a Naver receipt review event. If you participate, they'll upgrade your tteokbokki size or give you a cold slush drink. I noticed people around us drinking slushes, but it wasn't on the menu, so I wondered how they were ordering it... turns out it was a reward for writing a receipt review!

And then, an unexpected extra bonus. For anyone who waited over 30 minutes, they handed out a free can of soda. Exhausted from the long wait, but getting a free drink instantly put me in a good mood again. hahahaha (very easily pleased)

Inside the Hyeonseonine Combo Set (₩26,000)
✔️ Hyeonseonine Combo Set (₩26,000) After about a 10-minute wait, the staff brought out our order. It came on a tray, and it was quite generous. Best of all, it included five different items, which felt like a really satisfying combo.

The Hyeonseonine Combo Set includes five items total: tteokbokki, sundae, assorted fritters, mini gimbap, and fish cake. For the sundae, they mixed in whatever innards we wanted. They ask how you'd like it prepared when you order, and we asked for the liver left out with innards mixed in!

How spicy is medium-spice pan-tteokbokki, really?
It felt like it had been forever since I'd had pan-tteokbokki. The moment I saw it, I was flooded with memories of the bunsik shop near my school. Tteokbokki came in three spice levels — mild, medium, spicy — and we went with the safe medium option. Apparently it's just a touch spicier than Shin Ramyun. By the way, the signature level is the spicy one!

It had a mix of wheat rice cakes and fish cake, and the flavor was moderately savory without being too sweet. The sauce wasn't super thick, so it almost had a soupy-tteokbokki feel to it. I also appreciated that they gave a generous amount of sauce — because everything, the fritters, the gimbap, the sundae, all gets dipped in it ^-^

The rice cakes had soaked up the seasoning nicely, and the chewiness went without saying. The fish cake had cooked through well and tasted great too. It really brought back that authentic old-school tteokbokki feeling from my school days! 👏🏻

Three skewers of fish cake and plenty of broth
The fish cake comes on skewers, and the set included three skewers total. They gave us plenty of fish cake broth too, which was nice for sipping. The skewered fish cake is great dipped in soy sauce or, like me, in the tteokbokki sauce! Everything gets solved with tteokbokki sauce haha. The fish cake wasn't undercooked either, so the texture held up well.

Assorted fritters, mini gimbap, and sundae
Personally, the fritters were my favorite! The assortment seemed to include dumpling, sweet potato, vegetable, gimmari (seaweed noodle roll), and squid, and the batter was extremely crispy. Pairing it with the tteokbokki was, of course, a no-brainer.

Last up, the gimbap (seaweed rice roll) and sundae. The gimbap came as mini gimbap, cut into easy bite-sized pieces. Bunsik plus gimbap is always a winning combo! I'm quite a gimbap lover to begin with, so I really enjoyed it. The sundae had that satisfying chewiness, and the innards especially had a great soft texture, 🤤 You can even pick which parts you want, and the staff were so kind about it — I left really satisfied.

And of course, I dipped every single thing in the tteokbokki sauce haha. I think I ate it all pretty thoroughly and enjoyed it a lot. I guess that's what happens when the tteokbokki itself is delicious — everything you pair with it ends up tasting great too.

If I go again
Once again, tteokbokki, the ultimate Korean soul food, doesn't disappoint. I can confidently call Hyeonseonine a top Yongsan tteokbokki spot! Next time I want to try the hot-pot-style tteokbokki and finish it off with fried rice!
