Jokbal restaurant for a group dinner in Seongnam: Wangchang Jokbal
In short
Wangchang Jokbal (왕창족발) is a jokbal (braised pork trotter) restaurant a four-minute walk from Exit 1 of Sunae Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, in business at the same spot for 13 years. Three of us visited on a Friday at 6pm and ordered the large half-and-half jokbal (₩51,000) with extra eoriguljeot (salted oysters); the original half was clean with no gamey smell, and the spicy half was sweet-salty with real heat. Wangchang Jokbal suits both work dinners and family meals, so booking ahead is recommended.

Last Friday I went to Wangchang Jokbal, a local favorite near Sunae Station famous for work dinners, and had the half-and-half jokbal — it was sooo good that I have to write this up. Here's my review 🐷

Wangchang Jokbal is a 4-minute walk from Exit 1 of Sunae Station. I asked my sister who lives nearby and she said it's a well-known local favorite.

Korean pork trotters boiled all day at the open cooking counter
True to a local favorite, the jokbal was already prepping for Friday night rush. Right after the open kitchen, there's an open cooking counter..!!!!!! Wangchang Jokbal apparently uses only domestic fresh pig's feet. The owner was by the window, cooking jokbal nonstop the whole time. Freshness and hygiene, guaranteed.

Friday at 6pm: how busy is Wangchang Jokbal?
The whole place is table seating, no private rooms! We arrived a little after 6pm as a party of 3, and there were only two empty tables left — and one of those was reserved . . ? We were the last ones in before a waitlist started forming 🫨
They've apparently been running the same spot for 13 years, and with 3 tables of work dinners and everyone else being families, this place is definitely a certified Sunae Station local favorite ✔️

Wangchang Jokbal menu and which size to order
Jokbal (pig's trotters) is the main dish, with plenty of side dishes to go with it. Jaengban makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles on a tray), spicy sujebi (hand-torn dough soup), buchujeon (chive pancake) — the range of soups and pancakes was seriously impressive! You could probably do a first, second, and third round here...
Jokbal comes in large, medium, and small, but small is takeout/delivery only! Flavors are original and spicy, and going half-and-half costs an extra ₩2,000.
- Large: 3–4 servings
- Medium: 2–3 servings
- Small: 1–2 servings

We ordered the large half-and-half jokbal (₩51,000). Jokbal always comes with rice balls (bibimbap-style) as the unwritten rule, so we wanted to order that too, but on the day I visited, they were out of the herring roe bibimbap ㅠ_ㅠ So sadly, we just ordered the half-and-half jokbal (large)!

Free side dishes, steamed egg and extra salted oysters for ₩9,000
The basic side dishes are chive salad, doenjang soup, and steamed egg. Having steamed egg as a standard side dish is such a touching detail.
Next to the ssamjang (dipping sauce) was an extra item — eorigulgeot (salted young oysters) — which costs ₩9,000 extra. You can even get just the salted oysters to go for ₩10,000! I was wondering just how good these salted oysters could be . . ? and honestly, they paired amazingly with the jokbal! Definitely try it at least once.

Tasting the large half-and-half jokbal (₩51,000)
After about 15 minutes of waiting, the main dish arrived. Even while we waited, takeout customers just kept coming and coming. Real proof of a genuine local favorite 🫢

I worried the original-only order might be a bit plain, so we got the spicy version too — and tasting it, I'm so glad we went half-and-half. For someone like me who loves bold flavors, Wangchang Jokbal's original-and-spicy combo had this nice sweet-salty vibe.

Can't resist somaek (soju + beer) with half-and-half jokbal

How spicy is the spicy jokbal at Wangchang Jokbal?
The friend I went with said the spicy version was pretty strong, and after tasting it, it definitely wasn't mild. Total spice-wimps might have a hard time with this one. Personally, I loved the spicy version soooo much — honestly, I'm now team spicy over original!

The original jokbal: clean, with no gamey smell
But you know a good jokbal place is really judged by the original, right? Since sauce can mask any gamey smell. Wangchang Jokbal's original has absolutely zero gamey smell — really clean flavor. It's especially delicious paired with the salted oysters or mu-mal랭이 (dried radish strips) 👍

For the spicy version, I'd recommend wrapping it in chives or perilla leaves — perilla leaves especially help tone down the spice. If you're a spice-wimp but still want to try the spicy version, I recommend pairing it with perilla leaves 🍃

Better for a work dinner or a family meal?
It made total sense why Wangchang Jokbal has run in the same spot for 13 years. As a Sunae Station local favorite, I'd recommend it for both work dinners and family meals. They also have baby chairs, so it's great to bring kids along too.
