Korean BBQ with SUV parking near Sunae Station: Jeju Monteurak

In short

Jeju Monteurak Bundang Sunae Branch is a Jeju black pork BBQ restaurant a 3-minute walk from Exit 1 of Sunae Station in Bundang-gu, Seongnam. Two diners ordered the Jeju Bansang set, which brings ogyeopsal (five-layer pork belly), pork neck and a seafood doenjang stew, and staff grilled the meat over charcoal at the table. An SUV cannot use the car-elevator garage under the Gratea building, so Jeju Monteurak sends drivers to the Bobos Chervil lot next door; the best bite of the night was ogyeopsal with the shrimp-paste, garlic and sesame oil sauce in a lettuce wrap.

I was hunting for a good oiled pork belly place near Sunae Station and ended up at Jeju Monteurak Bundang Sunae Branch. It's a black pork specialist, and I'd heard the staff grill the meat for you. I hadn't oiled up my throat in a while, so I went for oiled pork belly and pork neck. The place is big enough to take reservations for 1 to 100 people.

Where is Jeju Monteurak Bundang Sunae Branch, and where do SUVs park?

Jeju Monteurak Bundang Sunae Branch is about a 3-minute walk from Exit 1 of Sunae Station on the Suin-Bundang Line. It's close to the subway, and having two parking lots nearby made driving there pretty convenient too.

The Gratea parking lot is inside the building itself, while the Bobos Chervil lot is right next door. The Gratea garage requires taking a car elevator down underground, which our SUV couldn't use, so we parked at Bobos Chervil instead. Since the restaurant has group seating, I was glad the parking situation was solid too, haha.

What the Jeju Monteurak storefront looks like

Here's the Jeju Monteurak storefront. Jeju means black pork, right? Being a black pork specialist, the Jeju vibe was strong from the dol hareubang (stone grandfather statues) onward. It was decorated in a trendy, clean way. The dol hareubang wearing a wig was pretty cute.

Evening atmosphere and how long you wait

Here's the interior of Jeju Monteurak Bundang Sunae Branch. I visited in the evening and it was packed. With every one of these tables full, the place was buzzing.

Since I had a reservation, I got seated quickly, but the people arriving behind me were waiting. Even while we were grilling our meat, people kept coming in — this place is clearly popular.

Jeju Monteurak menu and what comes in the Jeju Bansang set

Here's the menu. As a pork specialist, black pork, oiled belly, regular pork belly, and pork neck are the main draws. There were two of us, so we ordered the Jeju Bansang set. It comes with black pork oiled belly, pork neck, and a stew!

The banchan spread and how to ask for refills

Here's the basic table setting at Jeju Monteurak Bundang Sunae Branch. Wild garlic greens, baek kimchi (white kimchi), bracken fern, and various sauces to go with the meat. They set us up with scallion strips and lettuce for wraps. They grill the baek kimchi, and recommend a garlic-shrimp sauce that was genuinely delicious. There's a reason for the recommendation.

To get more side dishes, you call staff through the tableside ordering system. I thought it was a self-serve bar and tried to help myself, but it wasn't self-serve, oops.

Black pork ogyeopsal grilled over charcoal by the staff

Here's the oiled pork belly and pork neck from the Jeju Bansang set. Look at that bright red color — the meat quality looks great, doesn't it? It looked fresh at first glance.

Pork belly, mushrooms, asparagus, and baek kimchi all going on the charcoal. Another perk of Jeju Monteurak is that staff grill the meat for you directly. The grilling was really good — cooked to just the right doneness, extremely tasty.

The oiled pork belly turning golden brown. Honestly I usually eat regular pork belly more than the oiled kind, but eating this made me realize I'd forgotten how good oiled belly can be. So delicious!

Once the meat is fully cooked, they move it onto the side griddle plate. All I had to do was eat and enjoy.

Shrimp-paste, garlic and sesame oil sauce: the best combination

I topped the meat with the recommended shrimp-garlic sesame oil sauce. Wrapping it in lettuce too was the best combination. You really have to try it.

The seafood doenjang stew included with the Jeju Bansang set

Here's the seafood doenjang stew (soybean paste stew). It was loaded with tofu, clams, and onion, and after one spoonful of the broth I wanted rice immediately. Rich stuff.

Pork neck, grilled after the ogyeopsal

Here's the pork neck. About halfway through the oiled belly, they started grilling the pork neck. The round, nicely colored pieces turned golden brown as they cooked.

I ate my way through both the oiled belly and pork neck without picking a favorite — both were great. The meat quality and flavor were good, but what made this place even better was the side dishes served alongside. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good pork restaurant.
