Scalp protection oil and aroma before the color

Before coloring, they carefully applied an Aveda scalp protection oil.

Aveda products have their own distinct aroma, and they let me smell it directly a few times along the way. Instead of a salon filled with nothing but chemical dye smell, there was a subtle aroma scent that made me feel like I was actually being cared for.

Since hair can fly around during the process, they brought my drink over after the cut was done. They prepared iced coffee and a light snack too — it was nice that they paid attention to little timing details like that.

How was the cool brown color custom-mixed?

The color I wanted was in the brown family, but not too red or too yellow — something with a subtle cool tone that showed under light.

After checking the color left in my hair and the level of damage, director Jiyeon custom-mixed a brown-base color with added cool tones for a shimmering reflective effect.

Apparently Aveda color isn't applied as one fixed shade straight from the tube — instead multiple colors are mixed together to match the desired look and the current hair condition. I was told the color I got was made with a dye that's 93% naturally derived.

What the 3-step damage repair clinic involves

Along with the coloring, the damage repair clinic was done in three total steps.

• Step 1: protein care to set the hair's foundation
• Step 2: mixed in with the dye and applied
• Step 3: care with collagen and ceramide

I liked that it wasn't just about applying color — they factored in the long damaged hair and built clinic care into every step of the process.

Throughout, they kept checking to make sure the applied dye wouldn't leave any patchy spots.

Since my original hair color wasn't even to begin with, I was worried about how the result would turn out, but they were far more thorough than I expected.

At the end, they went back and delicately touched up the spots where the color had faded before. Right after the final touch-up, we moved straight to the shampoo room.

The shampoo chair had a massage function, so lying back was more comfortable than I expected. More than anything, director Jiyeon's hands were seriously soothing.

She shampooed while pressing firmly into my scalp, which helped melt away some of the fatigue from sitting so long during the dye process.

After shampooing, they applied a leave-in foam treatment followed by a thorough application of hair oil.

I was worried my hair might feel stiff after coloring, but they took care of it thoroughly all the way through the finishing steps.

How did the finished cool brown color look?

While blow-drying they added natural-looking curls, and the hair that had been frizzy and scattered came together with a real shine.

The finished color was exactly what I wanted. Indoors it reads as a calm brown, and under light a cool reflective shimmer subtly comes through.

It wasn't blanketed in too much dark tone, and there was no excess red or yellow, so it matched my skin tone really well.

Best of all, the color flowed naturally from root to tip, and the section that had stood out from old bleaching was blended in so it no longer looked out of place.

Thanks to trimming the damaged ends and getting the clinic treatment alongside the color, my hair looked much calmer overall than before the dye job.
