Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu is a Pyeongyang-style dumpling restaurant in Paju Book City, Gyeonggi, a five-minute drive from Paju Lotte Outlet and set among the cafés in front of Dirty Trunk. On a weekday visit at 2:30pm the house was full, and the meal was Pyeongyang mul-makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles) at 12,000 won, Pyeongyang mandu-guk (dumpling soup) at 11,000 won and a half plate of arongsatae suyuk (boiled beef shank) at 17,000 won, plus a free drink for filling in a 1-minute survey. Between the mild Korean beef broth and the self-serve dessert zone with five kinds of old-fashioned snacks and icy misugaru, Bubyeokjeong is worth a return trip with older family members.

Dolpanseok Jjamppong Paju Simhaksan Branch is a Chinese restaurant that recently opened in the Dolgotji food alley near Simhaksan in Paju, Gyeonggi, where nurungji (scorched rice) is layered under a hot stone plate for its signature stone jjajang and stone jjamppong. On a weekday evening, four of us came with our parents and ordered the nurungji stone-plate jjajang, a medium stone jjamppong with extra squid and tungbosha (fried shrimp toast), along with unlimited rice refills and a self-serve bar with green onion kimchi. Dolpanseok Jjamppong is an easy family dinner pick near Paju Simhaksan and the outlets.

Chinese restaurant by E-mart Paju: dry gganjjajang at Mimi China

Mimi China is a Chinese restaurant and handmade dumpling specialist in Unjeong, Paju, Gyeonggi, right next to E-mart Paju. Lunch was two bowls of gganjjajang (dry-style black bean noodles) at 10,000 won each, served with no sauce pooling and full of crunchy onion, cabbage and big chunks of pork, plus handmade gunmandu (pan-fried dumplings) at 8,000 won that ran with oil and juice. The gganjjajang at Mimi China is good, but the gunmandu is what you come back for.

Goyang hydrangea garden café with private room seats: Baedagol Bakery

Baedagol Bakery House is a small European-style bakery café on Hoguk-ro in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. The outdoor garden is full of hydrangeas, and the writer sat in a room-like private nook with second-floor picture windows, ordering coffee, bread and the signature melon warreu latte, which was so packed with fresh melon that her husband went looking for a place to buy melon syrup. It was a bit noisy even on a weekday, but anyone who loves outdoor cafés will want to come back in autumn.

Rooftop garden lunch with baguette sandwiches at a Goyang bakery

Boulangerie Tan, Hyundai Department Store KINTEX is a bakery on basement level 1 of the Hyundai Department Store KINTEX food hall in Goyang, Gyeonggi. The sun-dried tomato salt bread sandwich (7,900 won) and the jambon fromage salt bread sandwich (8,900 won) were ordered with the salt bread swapped for baguette, then carried up to the rooftop garden on the top floor of the department store. With baguette instead of salt bread, Boulangerie Tan's sandwiches taste cleaner and lighter — just right for lunch.
