Now that the weather is getting cooler, I keep craving a warm cup of coffee and something sweet to go with it. So I went looking for a bakery in Byeollae with a good reputation, and happened to land on Byway Bakers Byeollae Branch.

First look at Byway Bakers Byeollae Branch

Byway Bakers Byeollae Branch is a must-stop on the bakery pilgrimage route for bread lovers, thanks to its wide range of salt bread (buttery rolls with a salty crust) and baked sweets. I had heard the egg tart, a textbook crispy-outside, moist-inside pastry, was a work of art, so I went in with big expectations. From the pretty orange sign onward, this Byeollae egg tart spot caught my eye, and here is my honest, detailed review of the desserts I picked and tried.

Byway Bakers Byeollae Branch is right in front of you when you come out of Exit 4 of Byeolgaram Station on Line 4, and it is open daily 09:00–20:00. The address is 27-10 Deoksong 2-ro 10beon-gil, Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi, Unit 104 on the 1st floor.

Public transport access is excellent, so it is easy to reach on foot, and there is a spot in front of the building where you can stop briefly, which made quick pickup after a takeout order easy. As soon as you leave the station, the bright orange lettering on the clean gray building's ground floor is easy to spot, so even first-timers won't get lost.

Inside the shop, the tasting corner and financier gift boxes

Inside Byway Bakers Byeollae Branch

One side of Byway Bakers Byeollae Branch has a corner with bread samples, and it also sells financier (small almond butter cakes) gift packages of 5 and 10. When I opened the door, the nutty, fragrant smell of butter greeted me. The thoughtful tasting corner made it feel like the shop really cares about its customers.

Inside the clean, clear showcase, there were so many breads on display that I could hardly count them all. The 5-piece and 10-piece financier packages in classy orange boxes especially looked perfect for giving as gifts.

On the left of the showcase, the peach yogurt mini cake and the "wakppu salt bread" series wrapped in fruit netting come first. Browsing the breads in the case was a huge part of the fun, so I looked through the lineup in the order it was displayed. A peach yogurt mini cake piled with fruit, wakppu salt bread packed with milk whipped cream and gold cheese, fresh peach yogurt, and tangy Shine Muscat wakppu salt bread. The looks were honestly a work of art.

Right next to them sat Dubai chocolate salt bread that looks delicious just by its appearance, castella salt bread covered in fluffy powder, and sweet vanilla chocolate salt bread.

8+ financier flavors

When I moved on to the next shelf, a whole army of financiers was waiting to thrill baked-sweets fans.

Starting with the salty-charming salty financier, there were more than 8 kinds laid out endlessly: fig, caramel macadamia, almond chocolate, gold cheese, Oreo, vanilla and pistachio.

Past the financier zone, there were hearty ham cheese salt breads that look good as a meal replacement, and glossy, golden classic salt breads filling the shelf.

Next to them stood a big double chocolate baguette with tempting chocolate coating, nutty injeolmi butter (covered in roasted soybean powder), and Shanghai butter rice cake (chewy butter rice cake), all solidly in place.

Finally, the highlight of this bakery pilgrimage, proving the reputation of this famous Byeollae egg tart spot: golden egg tarts with a yellow, super crispy-looking shell, sitting there in all their glory,

and beside them a Hong Kong pineapple bun with a thick slab of butter sandwiched whole, and corn cheese salt bread dotted with corn, completing a truly perfect, generous lineup.

What I chose: golden egg tart and fresh peach yogurt wakppu salt bread

After agonizing over so many breads, I picked one golden egg tart, and finally chose the wakppu salt bread in fresh peach yogurt flavor, whose cute look had caught my eye from the start.

On one side of the shop, the drinks menu hung alongside a country-of-origin sign and a disinfection certificate, all neatly posted, which was great for hygiene too.

Anyway, Byway Bakers Byeollae Branch is a takeout-only shop, so the bread was packed securely in a pretty paper bag with stylish lettering and I headed home.

What does the golden egg tart taste like? Crispy shell, creamy custard

Egg tart and wakppu salt bread arranged on a plate at home

The Byway Bakers golden egg tart had a shell that shatters crisply and a filling that melts softly like pudding. As soon as I got home, I carefully arranged the breads on a pretty plate and started with the golden egg tart, the one that had made this place stick in my mind as a Byeollae egg tart spot.

When I cut it in half with a knife, it was packed to the edges with bright yellow custard cream.

The moment I took a big bite, the shell crumbled crisply and the inside melted softly in my mouth like pudding. It was fantastic. There was no eggy smell at all, just rich, nutty custard flavor with a touch of luxury, and I instantly understood why so many people call this the best egg tart place in Byeollae.

How was the fresh peach yogurt wakppu salt bread?

The fresh peach yogurt wakppu salt bread was a dessert-like bread: buttery salt bread topped with sweet-tart yogurt cream and big pieces of fresh peach. Piled with white cream like fresh snow, it was cut in half to reveal crispy, chewy salt bread filled with tangy yogurt cream and generous chunks of fresh peach, so it was visually satisfying even before I ate it.

On the first bite, the salty, buttery salt bread base, the sweet-tart yogurt cream and the softly chewy sweet fresh peach came together more perfectly than I expected.

It felt less like plain bread and more like eating a carefully made dessert. With a cold drink, the pleasant sweetness was kept neat and clean, so I never got tired of it and enjoyed it down to the last bite.

Verdict: is this Byeollae bakery worth going back to?

The egg tart, packed with sweet, soft filling, is so good that I keep thinking about it. One bite is enough to see why it's called an egg tart specialist >_<

The wakppu salt bread has a look and taste you rarely find elsewhere, so I enjoyed it a lot too. My husband said the wakppu salt bread was better, haha.
