You can't go to Busan and skip the raw fish, right?! I visited a place that is all about mackerel, right down to the name, "Haneobuui Godeungeosarang" (한어부의고등어사랑)! Haeundae is full of sashimi restaurants, but I'd never seen one put mackerel front and center like this, so I was curious and went :)
Where is Haneobuui Godeungeosarang Haeundae, and where can you park?
Haneobuui Godeungeosarang Haeundae is at 5 Haeundae-ro 594beon-gil, Haeundae-gu, Busan, on the 2nd floor, and you can walk there from Haeundae Station. It is open daily 11:00–22:30 (last order 21:00), with a break from 15:00 to 17:00.
- Parking: free dedicated lot (do not park in front of the ground-floor mart! Keep the mart on your left and go around to the back of the building)
- Reservations, takeout and delivery available; rooms for 4–20 people; group seating up to 60
- High chairs, separate men's and women's restrooms, Wi-Fi
- Paid corkage; Zero Pay and easy-pay accepted
- Spicy fish stew coupon with a sashimi order

First, parking: there's a dedicated lot on the ground floor below the restaurant! It fits about 8 cars, so driving here shouldn't be a problem :) And since it's close to Haeundae Station, walking is totally fine too!

The way up to the restaurant is at the end of the building on the left.

It's in an alley just off the main road near Haeundae Station!! I hear a lot of people end up here while searching for sashimi near the station, and I was curious how the mackerel sashimi would be 🙌

The restaurant is on the 2nd floor, so you take the stairs. You can feel how serious they are about mackerel from the entrance, haha

The receipt event is written on a chalkboard next to the entrance. There are two events, a receipt review and a Naver favorite, but only one of them can be applied!
Booths and private rooms at Haneobuui Godeungeosarang

Once you step inside Haneobuui Godeungeosarang Haeundae, booth seats stretch along the corridor. It felt much more spacious and comfortable than I expected.

The tables are well spaced, so you can eat without worrying about the next table! Further in there are separate rooms too, which looked fine for group gatherings or company dinners~
How to order, and what we chose: the mackerel set for 2

You order on the tablet at the table! We ordered the mackerel set for 2. Mackerel sashimi, oven-grilled mackerel and aged-kimchi braised mackerel all in one go? I'd never had a mackerel course before, so I was excited~!
Mackerel set side dishes and mackerel sushi

The mackerel set starts with a table full of basic dishes. There are quite a lot of side dishes, and every one of them looked like it took real effort!! Salad, pickled onions, aged kimchi, sweet-and-sour mulhoe, soba, kimchi pancake and more all came out neat and clean, and I thought my parents would love this if I brought them~

Mackerel sushi comes out too! The blue-backed skin is left on, so the look is different from the start, right? A layer of perilla leaf between the mackerel and the rice cuts the fishy smell perfectly. The oil mixes with the rice and spreads more softly than when you eat it as sashimi, so it was great as a first course.

The mulhoe comes as a palate cleanser. It was so sweet, sour and tasty that I wanted to order it on its own, haha
What does Tongyeong mackerel sashimi taste like?

Today's main, Tongyeong mackerel sashimi! No fishy taste at all, and the oil is dripping, it looks good at a glance, right?! When you pick up a slice, the thick flesh is so tender it droops. It's chewy at first, then a rich, nutty oiliness rushes in at the end, and I thought, this is why I came all the way here for Haeundae mackerel sashimi 🤍

Sushi rice comes separately so you can make mackerel sushi yourself. Personally, making it into sushi was my favorite way to eat it :)
The sauces on the side are generous too. Soy sauce, chogochujang (sweet chili vinegar sauce) and ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste), so you can dip to taste!

Sushi rice + gamtae (seaweed) + aged kimchi + mackerel sashimi is a killer combo😋
Meal course: mackerel braised with aged kimchi

After you've had your fill of the sashimi, the aged-kimchi braised mackerel arrives in a ttukbaegi (earthenware pot) as the meal. The mackerel flesh broke apart softly the moment my chopsticks touched it!!

The broth is spicy but doesn't leave a heavy aftertaste, and it was delicious piled on rice with the kimchi.
Norwegian mackerel grilled in a 500°C oven, plus braised pomfret

Last is the Norwegian mackerel grilled in a 500°C oven! The skin is charred crisp, and even the sound is different when your chopsticks touch it. Crunchy outside, moist inside, the flesh pulls apart along the grain, and the more you chew, the more oil seeps out and the nutty taste lingers~~

And finally, braised pomfret! It isn't part of the course, I think it came out as a side dish? It's soy sauce-based so it isn't spicy, and the flesh was so tender, really moist with a fine grain~! It was my first time trying pomfret, and it tastes like something everyone would like.💛
Verdict: a Haeundae mackerel course for parents
Recommended if you want rich, oily mackerel sashimi plus spicy fish stew in Haeundae
