Sushi izakaya in Hapjeong: half-eel rice bowl date, Sushi Sakaba

Sushi Sakaba Hapjeong is a sushi and Japanese izakaya near Hapjeong Station Exit 3 in Mapo, Seoul, recently reopened after a renovation. On a date, the writer and her boyfriend shared the 12-piece Hap sushi set (24,000 won) and the half-eel boyang eel rice bowl (19,000 won), and the double-layered sashimi, generous eel and pudding-soft chawanmushi stood out. Sushi Sakaba Hapjeong is a satisfying choice when omakase feels like too much but you still want quality sushi.

Dangsan date pub with Hawaiian pizza, Cabrew Lager: Long Time No See

Long Time No See Dangsan Branch is a craft beer pizza pub near Exit 12 of Dangsan Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, where guests tag a wristband and pour as much as they like from 29 craft beers. The writer and her boyfriend shared a half-and-half Hawaiian and bulgogi shrimp pizza with an added cheese crust and cheese rabokki (ramen and rice cakes in spicy sauce), with Goose IPA and Cabrew Premium Lager. Because you pay only for what you pour, Long Time No See Dangsan Branch is a fun, good-value pizza-and-beer date spot.

Sindorim jokbal for two: Sunday 5 pm spicy front leg, The Jokbal

The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch is a jokbal (braised pork trotter) restaurant near Guro Station and Sindorim Station in Guro, Seoul, on the ground floor of the Sindorim 3rd Prugio shopping complex, reportedly opened by a former Chosun Hotel chef with 30 years of experience. Around 5 pm on a Sunday, two of us shared the spicy half-and-half front leg for ₩52,000: tender front leg meat, spicy jokbal with a numbing heat that builds, plus free cold jokbal and napa cabbage doenjang soup. The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch served more than two people could finish, so it suits groups of three or more adding sides, and booking ahead is recommended for weekend evenings.

Jongno 3-ga Korean BBQ, potato wraps after a 35-min wait: Cham

Cham Dwaejitgan Jongno Main Branch (참돼짓간 종로본점) is a Korean BBQ pork belly restaurant where staff grill the meat from start to finish, on the ground floor of CGV Piccadilly right outside Exit 2-1 of Jongno 3-ga Station in Seoul. After a 35-minute Catch Table wait on a Saturday evening, the writer and her boyfriend had 2 servings of chamsamgyeopsal (pork belly), 1 serving of kkotmoksal (pork neck), Jirisan kudzu naengmyeon (cold noodles) and rice for 56,000 won, and the potato wraps (pork belly wrapped in grill-roasted potato slices) were the most memorable part. If the wait at Cham Dwaejitgan puts you off, come after 8 PM, when tables start to clear.

Sangam-dong eel restaurant: bokbunja eel & wild ginseng dinner, Ryeok

Ryeok Minmul Jangeogui Jeonmunjeom (력 민물장어구이전문점) is a freshwater eel grill restaurant in Sangam-dong, Mapo, Seoul, near Exit 9 of Digital Media City Station. On a reserved weekend dinner, the salt-grilled eel (27,000 won) and bokbunja (Korean black raspberry) sauce-grilled eel (28,000 won) came with 8 banchan (side dishes), a free roe stew and one wild ginseng root per person. With firm, non-fishy eel and generous extras, Ryeok is a strong pick for group dinners in Sangam-dong.

Gift bakery café at Gongdeok Station: wrapped bakes, Fluffy Bake Shop

Fluffy Bake Shop is a bakery café for baked sweets and salt bread near Exit 2 of Gongdeok Station in Mapo, Seoul. The blogger visited around 4pm on a weekday to buy individually wrapped financiers and madeleines as a gift for a friend, and tried the Fluffy Bake Shop Dubai egg tart. The salt bread had already sold out, but the taste, atmosphere and packaging made Fluffy Bake Shop a Gongdeok gift-dessert shop worth revisiting.

Mullae chicken restaurant with baseball on TV: Jangjakgun Mullae

Jangjakgun Mullae (장작꾼 문래점) is an oak wood-fired nurungji (crispy scorched rice) whole chicken restaurant at 81 Seonyu-ro, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. On a weekend date, a couple booked a 5:30 PM table and ordered the nurungji half-and-half chicken (sweet-spicy sauce and corn cheese, 26,000 won) and flying fish roe rice balls (4,000 won), with the moist breast meat, cheese crisped onto the stone plate and crunchy glutinous rice nurungji as highlights. For a lighter roasted chicken near Mullae Station on a day when fried chicken feels too heavy, Jangjakgun Mullae is a satisfying choice.

Yeouido tteokbokki bar: after-work date with fish cake, Hyeonseonine

Hyeonseonine Premium IFC Mall Branch (현선이네 프리미엄 IFC몰점) is an instant tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) snack bar on B2 of IFC Mall in Yeouido, Seoul. On an after-work date, the blogger shared a medium-spicy instant tteokbokki for two with a side of fish cake. The sweet, moderately spicy broth and generous add-ins stayed hot to the last bite thanks to the table induction burner. Hyeonseonine Premium is a clean, easygoing spot for a date or a post-work dinner.

Chilled hanwoo yukhoe mulhoe for summer: Yeongdeungpo bar Yeokjeon

Yeokjeon Pojangmacha Yeongdeungpo is a retro-style pojangmacha bar on the second floor of the main food street near Yeongdeungpo Station in Seoul. On a hot evening the writer and her boyfriend ordered hanwoo tuppul yukhoe mulhoe (grade 1++ beef tartare in chilled broth) for 18,900 won, butter garlic fries for 9,900 won and spicy fish cake udon for 8,900 won, with Cass beer and Saero Omija soju. The icy, peppery yukhoe mulhoe was the standout summer dish, and the wide second floor also suits company dinners and big groups.

Lip tattoo after filler in Gangnam: 1hr 20min at Lamoon Brow

Lamoon Brow is a lip semi-permanent makeup studio a 2–3 minute walk from Gangnam Station Exit 5 in Seocho, Seoul. Bothered by dull lip color and left-right asymmetry, the writer had a personal color consultation at Lamoon Brow and chose a tone that looks natural even bare-faced, with the whole visit taking a little over 1 hour 20 minutes including consultation and prep. Lips that had filler 2–3 years ago swelled slightly, but the swelling went down after about 2 hours and the result was worth it.

Pork cutlet sets with udon or cold soba in Yongsan, Seoul: Onjeong

Yongsan Donkatsu Onjeong Gyeongyang Sikdang, Yongsan branch is a Japanese-style pork cutlet restaurant within walking distance of Hyochang Park Station in Yongsan, Seoul. I tried the udon and classic pork cutlet set and the buckwheat noodle and spicy pork cutlet set; both were filling, though the spicy cutlet was hotter than expected.
