Pangyo Korean restaurant for a weekday lunch date: Bulgogi On Soban

In short

Bulgogi On Soban Pangyo Branch is a Korean restaurant on Basement 1 of Samhwan Highex Building A in Pangyo, Seongnam, serving bulgogi meals on individual one-person trays. On a weekday lunch date, the writer and her husband shared the signature garlic beef rib bulgogi for two with an egg-fried pink sausage side and pudding-style steamed egg, and the tender beef plus 2 hours of free parking made for a relaxed lunch. Bulgogi On Soban is a good pick for a cozy bulgogi meal for two in Pangyo Techno Valley.

My husband and I finally had a weekday lunch free at the same time, so we went on a lunch date to the Pangyo Techno Valley area. Pangyo has plenty of restaurants, but most are single-dish places like stew or gukbap (rice soup), so it was surprisingly hard to find somewhere to treat a guest or enjoy a meat meal for two. Then I found Bulgogi On Soban (불고기온소반) Pangyo Branch, a Pangyo lunch spot that serves one tray per person, and we walked in without hesitating.

Parking and directions to Bulgogi On Soban in Pangyo

Bulgogi On Soban is inside the Samhwan Highex building, which has parking for about 300 cars and 2 hours of free parking. Parking around Hyundai Department Store Pangyo and Pangyo Station is notoriously a battle, but we weren't rushed at all during the meal. Even better, you take the elevator from the underground garage and it connects straight to the restaurant entrance without a drop of rain, so the route is great. Just set your GPS to the Samhwan Highex Building A garage entrance.

What is the atmosphere like at Bulgogi On Soban?

When you step in, instead of the stuffy greasy smell typical of grill restaurants, a faint broth aroma greets you first.

Inside Bulgogi On Soban Pangyo

Over 90% of the customers here are Pangyo office workers, and true to that, every seat is neatly stocked with sharing bowls and ladles, so my husband and I could share hygienically.

Story written on the wall of Bulgogi On Soban

Reading the text on the wall, I learned that Bulgogi On Soban began by reinterpreting bulgogi, a signature Korean dish holding the wisdom of our ancestors, with a modern touch. They say they have studied meat aging, cooking time and harmony with the side dishes through 10 years of restaurant know-how. Under a principle called "myeongsim bulmang" (keep it in mind), they don't serve anything they wouldn't want to eat themselves, and they insist on Korean beef cow intestines, beef broth simmered for 12 hours, and top-grade domestic ingredients only, which felt deeply trustworthy.

How does the 48-hour aged garlic beef rib bulgogi taste?

Our main for lunch that day was Bulgogi On Soban's signature garlic flower rib bulgogi for two. The tricky-to-trim true rib meat is aged at low temperature for 48 hours and stir-fried in a special garlic sauce, so my expectations were...

Soon the banchan (side dishes) were laid out. The iron plate bulgogi set comes with rib meat piled high on a wide, sizzling-hot cast iron plate.

The glossy, juicy surface and the sharp garlic seasoning tucked in between made my mouth water just looking at it.

Next to the meat, consommé-seasoned corn, white honey garaetteok (rice cake sticks) and crunchy enoki mushroom kimchi grill filled the plate with color, like facing a well-prepared feast on an iron plate.

The moment I picked up a thick piece of flower rib with my chopsticks and put it in my mouth, it melted with no toughness at all, and a sweet yet deep savoriness wrapped around my tongue.

The subtle garlic flavor held the beef's own nutty aroma in check, so it wasn't greasy at all. I piled a big piece of meat and plenty of the special garlic ssamjang (dipping sauce) on fresh green lettuce and made a huge wrap, and the juices bursting out with each bite together with the sharp seasoning were simply superb.

Adding the popping sweet-salty grilled corn and chewy rice cakes made it so fun that my chopsticks never had a moment to rest until the last bite, haha

Side orders: egg-fried pink sausage and pudding steamed egg

To add some fun to the meat meal, we also picked a sausage egg pancake and a pudding steamed egg. The egg pancake, made with big slices of pink sausage fried with scallions, was exactly the nostalgic lunchbox side my mom used to pack when I was little, haha

The pudding steamed egg was smooth without a single air bubble, and when you scoop it with a spoon it melts away like jelly. With rice made from Jindo black glutinous rice and a spicy bean sprout soup on top, we were really full and satisfied.
