Gaepo-dong bakery café with three bean choices: Minimale Gaepo

In short

Minimale Bakery & Coffee Bar Gaepo Branch is a bakery café and coffee bar on a residential side street off Gaepo-ro 22-gil in Gangnam, Seoul. Visiting right after lunch, the writer chose between acidic, nutty and decaf beans for an iced americano, then added the signature Helsinki Latte and freshly baked bread; the café was full, but a seat opened up in about 5 minutes. Minimale Gaepo is a good pick for an unhurried coffee-and-bread break in the sun pouring through its big windows.

The muggy, Southeast Asia-style weather just keeps going every single day. How is everyone surviving this sweltering summer? Our family is getting through each day with cool air conditioning and cold coffee.

It's holiday season, so I'd love to travel far, but wow, in this heat I can't even think about it. The sun is so fierce that the soil around here is all dried out. Honestly, it's scary.

Today I'm sharing our own solution for a cool day: checking out a good café. This one is a neighborhood café in the Gangnam area with alley charm, a quiet street, and the smell of bread fresh from the oven drifting out.

The calm interior with a slight industrial touch adds to the mood. It sits in an alley in Gaepo-dong, with Yangjaecheon stream right in front, so it's good in many ways. Once the heat eases a bit, it would be great to do a Yangjaecheon stroll in the same trip.

Minimale Gaepo location: a residential alley on Gaepo-ro 22-gil

The address is 43 Gaepo-ro 22-gil, Gangnam-gu, 1st floor. Being in a residential area, the smell of bread fresh from the oven on a quiet morning is a real charm. The mood is great, especially in the morning.

The entrance already has so much charm, and with its full-glass windows it's a sunshine hotspot. The interior is minimalist and clean with a little industrial flavor, and it's cozy and small-scale, like a hideout.

With all that sunlight, photos come out pretty however you shoot them, and since they make and bake the bread themselves, the bakery area inside looks lovely too.

They say the coffee uses good beans too. The reason so many people come, apparently, is that they strip away the unnecessary and focus only on quality. They seemed very focused on the aroma and taste of the coffee and the flavor of the bakery.

The reason it's in a Gaepo-dong residential area, I heard, is that the cozy, quiet alley mood fits the café's concept better than a flashy main road. And the smell of baking bread in a neighborhood like this really creates a wonderful feeling.

The breads and the staff

The bread selection at Minimale Gaepo isn't huge, but everything was well baked and looked really tempting, and everyone was leaving with several pieces. That seems to prove the taste is recognized.

The staff are really kind too. They explain and help with every little thing carefully. The most popular item on their own menu was the Helsinki Latte. It had a luxurious taste that I loved. I thought, so this is real coffee.

The bread smell isn't showy at all; it drifts gently deep into your nose. I couldn't not eat.

Choosing your own beans when you order

At Minimale Gaepo you can pick your coffee beans as you order. They have acidic, nutty and decaf beans, and you just choose while ordering. The price was cheap too. Nice, right?

There are so many cafés these days that it's better to know what you're drinking rather than just drinking whatever.

This is Minimale's signature coffee, the Helsinki Latte. We were drawn to it and tried it first, so I'll leave a review for you.

Visiting right after lunch: a full house and a 5-minute wait

As expected, every seat was taken, but a spot opened up within 5 minutes, so we sat and enjoyed the coffee and sunshine. Lots of local residents come here. Probably because there are few places nearby that compete on coffee quality.

Lovely mood, right? It's close to the Yangjaecheon Café Street, so many coffee lovers seemed to be coming and going. Coffee aside, they have bread too, so it was perfect for a dessert outing.

They also sell their own roasted beans. Isn't that great?

Our coffee and bread came out too. The bread looks so tempting, doesn't it? It was soft and delicious.

Good, right? We came right after lunch and a lot of the bread had already sold. There's even a spot in the corner of the café where they bake the bread, so that explained the fresh-from-the-oven smell. I figured the bread couldn't possibly be bad.

How the Helsinki Latte and iced americano tasted

Here are the Helsinki Latte and the iced americano. I love coffee so I'm very picky about taste, and this passed. I'd recommend the acidic beans, though the people around me all preferred the nutty flavor.

A Helsinki Latte and an iced americano

The Helsinki Latte tastes truly luxurious. It's a taste I haven't had anywhere else, and wow, I'm so jealous that Gaepo-dong got a café like this.

The bread quality is no joke either, right? It looks so tempting, and it tastes good too haha.

And here's the Helsinki Latte again; the cup is so pretty too. Sunshine, bread smell, latte. Isn't that a perfect one-day holiday?

Bread lovers will find it hard to walk past this place. Some people were sweeping up practically everything at once. Later, when it cools down, it would be nice to buy bread and coffee and head to Yangjaecheon right in front.

Tidiness shows everywhere. And a quiet mood on top of that!!

A neatly kept corner of the café

The bread was chewy, soft and sweet without being overpowering, which I liked. It had everything bread should have.

One piece of bread and a cup of americano wash all the stress away.

Who should you go with?

Relaxing and spending time somewhere with such a nice mood feels great. Plus, I'd hardly ever seen a bakery café among the Gaepo-dong cafés, so it's convenient too.

Minimale, a new café on the Yangjaecheon Café Street, focuses on quality, and I loved how clean it felt. It looked like a good place for families or couples to enjoy casually.

In the sweltering summer, why not enjoy a relaxed day with good coffee at a place with tasty desserts? I feel at ease even in a library, and I get that same good feeling in a café like this. A Gaepo-dong bakery café on the Yangjaecheon Café Street, go check it out right now!!
