Paju dumpling spot, staff meal: mild vs spicy hot pot – Bubyeokjeong

In short

Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu (Paju Publishing City, Heyri Village, Unjeong and Ilsan main branch) is a Korean restaurant specializing in Pyeongyang-style mandu (dumplings) on Jimok-ro in Paju, Gyeonggi. On a staff group meal, the team ordered one mild and one spicy mandu hot pot, and the mung bean pancake given for a Naver review was so good they ordered two more to share. Even Bubyeokjeong's spicy mandu hot pot is mild, so it suits group and family meals that call for a clean, light hot pot rather than a fiery, heavy broth.

How was Bubyeokjeong's mandu hot pot for a staff group meal in Paju?

I went to the Paju main branch of Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu (부벽정평양만두) with my coworkers for a healthy meal built around mandu hot pot (dumpling hot pot). The place is famous for Pyeongyang-style dumplings, but this time we chose the hot pot, which comes with vegetables and a warm broth. We sat around the table together and loved the light flavor and the generous portions.

This is the Paju hot pot place to remember on days when you want a healthy meal.

Bubyeokjeong's atmosphere

The restaurant has a white exterior with a very clean sign. You can see inside through huge picture windows, and once inside there's a spacious hall with tables set at roomy intervals. The light floors and woody touches came together for a classy feel.

Is it good for sharing mandu hot pot as a group?

For our group of coworkers, Bubyeokjeong was a great spot where we could eat together and chat. Sitting in a row and sharing the hot pot had a different kind of fun from everyone eating their own bowl. It was lovely to talk while eating warm food together.

Bubyeokjeong mandu hot pot, mild vs spicy: is the difference big?

We ordered one mild and one spicy hot pot, and honestly the difference in spiciness didn't feel big. Maybe that's because it's light, healthy-tasting Pyeongyang mandu. The spicy one is fairly mild too, and since most of our group can't handle spicy food (total spice wimps), that actually worked out well for us.

On the other hand, if you're hoping for a sharp, spicy, rich broth, you might be a little disappointed. Bubyeokjeong's hot pot is on the light side overall, so keep our experience in mind when you visit.

The pot was generously filled with napa cabbage, bean sprouts, bok choy and several kinds of mushrooms. Seeing the vegetables packed into the pot made it feel like a healthy meal, and I loved that.

Naver review mung bean pancake, two more added

At Bubyeokjeong you get a mung bean pancake (bindaetteok) if you write a Naver review, but it was so good that we just ordered two more. Wow, so nutty and tasty!

Mandu and kalguksu noodles served separately, cooked and ladled as you go

Along with the hot pot, they also bring big dumplings and kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) on a separate plate. You can see the ingredients that go in, then boil them and ladle out as much as you want, which makes it great for sharing. Steam rising off the table and that good smell made me feel even hungrier, if you know what I mean, haha.

What I liked most about this meal was the light, health-focused flavor instead of the strong flavors we're used to when eating out. It suited my coworkers who don't handle spicy food well, and if you're a family in Paju who prefers a light style, I really want to tell you to come.

Value for money and fullness for a group meal?

The hot pot was less monotonous than I expected, with dumplings, vegetables, broth and noodles, and it was really filling. Shared among several people, the value felt good too. When choosing a group meal spot you look at price and also at how substantial the food is, and this hot pot won me over on that front. Ours was a team of big eaters, haha.

Do the in-store survey and get a free bottle of drink! What a perk!!! Let's definitely remember this!

The story behind the name Bubyeokjeong

The family story in the restaurant's introduction stuck with me too. It began with Pyeongyang-style dumplings that a grandmother made for her husband, who had left his hometown. The name Bubyeokjeong comes from Bubyeongnu (Bubyeokru) pavilion on the Daedong River in Pyeongyang, and I heard they wanted to create a pavilion-like space where anyone can stay comfortably.

Knowing this story, the time spent eating light dumplings and warm broth felt a little warmer. I think it suits days when you want to sit around together and have a comfortable meal rather than something fancy.

I think it suits people who like gentle, comfortable flavors over spicy, rich hot pot, and I'd recommend it for coming with kids too. We had a healthy meal together in Paju, and neighbors, if you want a healthy meal with a group, I recommend it twice over.
