Euljiro 3-ga bone grill restaurant, cold kimchi noodles: Eulji Baektan

In short

Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui (을지백탄뼈구이) is a spicy pork bone grill restaurant right outside Exit 11 of Euljiro 3-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul, grilling over 1,300-degree white charcoal (baektan). The writer walked into Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui without a reservation around 5:20 pm on a Saturday, was seated on the 2nd floor within 5 minutes, and paired a small level 2 bone grill (₩38,000) with a rice ball and cold kimchi mari guksu (noodles in chilled kimchi broth). Level 2 was properly spicy, but the amount of meat was the best the writer has had at any bone grill.

A great Euljiro spot for group gatherings and company dinners: "Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui (을지백탄뼈구이)" at Euljiro 3-ga Station

I suddenly had a craving for something spicy, and while I was agonizing over the menu, "bone grill" popped into my head. I searched around and found Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui, a famous Euljiro restaurant for exactly that! This is the story of how I soaked up the full weekend "Hipjiro" (hip Euljiro) vibe there.

How long is the Saturday evening wait at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui?

We walked in without a reservation around 5:20 pm on a Saturday, and of course, being a popular Euljiro restaurant, there was already a wait . . ! Next to the Catch Table device there were chairs set out for waiting guests.

The "lunch service starts" sign caught my eye. On weekdays, it's a place that serves lunch in Euljiro too!

I put my name on the waiting list and got in within 5 minutes. We didn't wait long at all, so we were super lucky haha. Still, if you're planning ahead, I recommend reserving through Naver or Catch Table.

The first floor was already completely full, so we were guided to a seat upstairs. The second floor was packed too. The tables with place settings already laid out were for guests with reservations, and a spot for two just happened to open up, so I think that's how we got in right away!

The menu is quite varied and there's a wide range of drinks too, so it seems like a good place for group gatherings or company dinners. I wondered why it's called "Baektan" Ppyeogui, and it turns out the meat is grilled over 1,300-degree white charcoal (baektan), haha. White charcoal is said to be the finest grade of charcoal.

Table setting and free side dishes

The basic table setting is all laid out on the table, so you can just grab what you need. The water comes in a plastic bottle, which is unusual, and it was served ice cold, which I loved lol

The side dishes were a cabbage salad with Kewpie-style mayo, kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), and white kimchi. They were all tasty, but the kkakdugi was seriously good lol. The white kimchi and cabbage salad were great for calming the spice.

Shaping your own rice ball at the table

Next came the rice ball (jumeokbap). There's no tuna or any special filling inside. I think it's just seaweed, sesame oil, and mayo, so why is it so good . . ? I put on the gloves, rolled it into nice bite-size balls, and it was ready to welcome the main star.

Small bone grill: how big is it and how hot is level 2?

Even though it's the small size, the charcoal bone grill at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui was huge, and I was startled by the portion.

Ahh, that red heat just looks like stress relief. I picked up a freshly served piece and the size of the bone was crazy~~

Piping hot and steaming, the bone grill was nicely grilled over the charcoal fire, crispy outside and juicy inside!

I moved a piece to my small plate and picked off the meat. There was a ton of meat and it was so soft that it separated from the bone effortlessly.

But wow, even at level 2 it was quite a bit spicier than I expected. It felt a little hot even to us, and we normally enjoy spicy food. I haven't tried level 1 so I don't know how big the gap is, sob, but I think level 1 would be plenty spicy too!

I put the meat and sauce on top of a rice ball and took it in one bite. Ahh, it was so good. Spicy, but you keep wanting more~

The amount of meat and the texture are crazy, right . . ? Honestly, the best meat yield of any bone grill I've ever had 👍 We each worked through our share, then I stripped a few leftover bones into a bowl, and seeing the amount of meat with my own eyes was even more shocking lol. That's all the meat from just 2 or 3 bones . .

Is cold kimchi noodles a good match for bone grill?

I debated getting another rice ball, then ordered the cold kimchi noodles (kimchi-malli guksu, ₩9,500) instead! It was an excellent choice at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui.

It was cold, the seasoning was just right, the noodles were chewy, and it goes so well with summer, sob. We polished it off in no time along with the leftover bone grill!

Restroom and atmosphere at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui

The restroom is on the second floor inside the restaurant, so you don't have to go outside. Convenient haha

Tearing into spicy bone grill right under the air conditioner made for such a happy Euljiro weekend evening! It's full of Hipjiro charm, and there were lots of group gatherings and meetups. Being in the middle of that lively weekend vibe refreshed me too, which I loved haha. I recommend Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui to anyone looking for a restaurant near Euljiro 3-ga Station!
