Hwajeong Station gukbap restaurant with half-plate suyuk: Pyeongando

In short

Pyeongando Restaurant Hwajeong Branch is a 24-hour gukbap (rice-and-soup) restaurant in Goyang, Gyeonggi, 200 meters from Hwajeong Station Exit 3 and directly across from the Deogyang-gu Office. After a morning of bread and desserts at the KINTEX Coffee & Bakery Fair, this meal was mixed sundae-guk (blood sausage soup), Korean beef ox head gukbap, and a half-plate of assorted suyuk (boiled meats) so generous it looked like a full plate. Parking was no worry either, since the Deogyang-gu Office lot opens free on weekends.

Why a gukbap restaurant after a sweets-heavy KINTEX fair

Last weekend I went to the Coffee & Bakery Fair held at KINTEX in Ilsan. Walking around tasting all sorts of desserts and bread for 'market research' left my stomach feeling pretty sugary haha. I love bread so I happily ate my way through it, but for a Korean, a meal has to end with a hot bowl of soup to settle things down properly — so I headed to Pyeongando, a 24-hour, open-every-day gukbap restaurant near Hwajeong Station.

It's about 200 meters from Hwajeong Station Exit 3, right across from Deogyang-gu Office, on the 1st floor along the main road, so it's easy to spot. There's parking in the building, and on weekends you also get free roadside parking plus the Deogyang-gu Office lot opening up, so I visited without any parking stress haha. Parking near Hwajeong Station is usually brutal, so being right in front of the district office was a huge plus!

What the dining room feels like, with no gamey soup smell

This is a newly opened spot and it's spotless! Walking in, the space felt clean and pleasant, well organized without the strong smell or dampness you'd usually expect from a gukbap place. The hall is spacious with generous gaps between tables, ranging from 4-person to 6-person tables, and the crowd was a nice mix — solo diners, families, all sorts.

Unlimited sundae self-bar hours

11:30am - 2pm, 5:30pm - 8pm. The self-bar offers unlimited sundae refills, but it seemed like it might only run on weekdays since there was none available when I went — a little disappointing, but the quality of the dishes I ordered wiped that away completely haha.

What's in the mixed sundae-guk, and the side dishes

You get kkakdugi (radish kimchi), kimchi, chili peppers, onion, chives, and ssamjang. The kitchen was semi-open, and it looked like they manage ingredients strictly — even the chives, which wilt easily, were super fresh, and the kimchi and kkakdugi had a crisp, fresh crunch.

Just seeing the milky broth bubbling away in the earthenware pot settled my slightly queasy stomach haha. Sundae-guk can be ordered meat-only, sundae-only, or mixed depending on preference, and I went mixed to enjoy the variety! The soup was loaded with hearty, savory blood sausage, chewy glass-noodle sundae, and tender pork offal with no gaminess — a generous, filling bowl.

Korean beef ox head gukbap served with somyeon noodles

The ox head gukbap comes with thin wheat noodles and is great when you want a clear, clean broth — and unlike regular lean meat, the chewy texture of the ox head meat is exactly why people seek this dish out haha. Loading it up with fragrant chives makes it even better!

The half-plate of assorted suyuk that looked like a full plate

After all those desserts I needed something to settle my stomach, but adding carbs felt like it would push my conscience too far, so I ordered the assorted boiled meats instead. I got the half-plate to keep it light, but the portion looked like a full plate — I was genuinely surprised by how packed the plate was!! It had lean boiled meat, chewy head meat, and firm sliced pork all together, served cold like naengchae-jeyuk, but soft and moist — I topped it with salted shrimp and threw my conscience out the window haha.
