What is Daidokoro Gwangalli Main Branch like?
Walk through the Gwangalli alleys when the sunlight is soft and you'll spot a red sign and cute Japanese-style knickknacks catching your eye. The place I visited this time is Daidokoro Gwangalli Main Branch (다이도코로 광안리본점), a Japanese home-cooking restaurant that has held its spot in Namcheon-dong for a long time. With curry aged for 100 hours, plus chicken nanban, karaage (Japanese fried chicken) and tonkatsu (pork cutlet), it was a Gwangalli restaurant serving neat, tidy Japanese meals.

Atmosphere and seating

This is the exterior of Daidokoro Gwangalli Main Branch, on the second floor in a Namcheon-dong alley near Geumnyeonsan Station. Once you pass through the prettily decorated passage,

the red-and-white entrance on the second floor greets you first.
Inside, Japanese posters, small ornaments and character goods fill the place, so it felt like stopping by a souvenir shop on a trip.
Sunlight comes softly in through the windows, and with the wooden tables and bright lighting, the whole place felt warm.
The tables are spaced fairly comfortably, so it felt like a Gwangalli restaurant that's good for a meal with friends, or for lingering alone.
It's an open space, so it never felt stuffy, yet it was still cozy.
What we ordered and the prices
At Daidokoro you'll find a variety of Japanese home-style dishes, centered on the aged curry, including chicken nanban, Japanese-style kkanpunggi, tonkatsu and karaage.
Today's order:
- Japanese-style kkanpunggi set ₩13,900 — Japanese-style kkanpunggi set meal + fried egg + croquette + curry sauce
- Chicken nanban set ₩14,500 — chicken nanban set meal + fried egg + croquette + curry sauce
- Cold udon (single item) ₩6,000
- Plum wassoda ₩6,000
- Mango wassoda ₩6,000

The menu is easy to take in at a glance, and each set lets you taste a bit of several dishes, so it's a Gwangalli spot to remember when you want a filling lunch.
Table setting
Pudding spoons, shichimi (Japanese chili spice blend), furikake (rice seasoning), dressing and water cups are neatly laid out.
What does the full spread look like?

After we ordered, the cutlery came, and a little later several dishes arrived in tidy bowls.

A yellow fried egg, a golden croquette and curry sauce sitting together looked bright, yet gently comforting without feeling heavy.
Small side dishes and even the pudding were lined up neatly, and my mood lifted the moment I looked at the table.

Japanese-style kkanpunggi set ₩13,900
The Japanese-style kkanpunggi set came looking appetizing, with glossy sauce-coated chicken topped with finely chopped vegetables.

The sauce had soaked nicely into the outside, and the meat inside was tender, so it was easy to eat with rice.
It had a slightly sweet, subtly lingering flavor,

The curry sauce that came with the set goes through a 100-hour aging process, according to the restaurant's notice. I could enjoy it over the rice in different ways. The golden croquette was crisp outside and soft inside, and the runny yolk of the fried egg blended naturally with the rice.

Chicken nanban set ₩14,500
This is Daidokoro's chicken nanban set: crispy fried chicken with a generous helping of smooth sauce on top.

The plain savoriness of the chicken and the creamy sauce went well together, so it was calm and easy to enjoy rather than overpowering.
A light sprinkle of furikake on the rice worked nicely.
I finished with the soft milk pudding. The dessert in its small cup was gently sweet and smooth, and it tidied up the afterglow of a generous meal comfortably.

Cold udon for summer, ₩6,000
The cold udon has tempura and vegetables piled refreshingly on top of a clear broth.
The broth spreads a cool, subtle flavor,

and the springy noodles with the cold broth lightly reset my appetite in the middle of the meal.

Having tempura alongside balanced it out so it didn't feel heavy, which suits it as a summer menu pick at a Gwangalli restaurant.

Plum wassoda and mango wassoda, ₩6,000 each
The plum wassoda (fruit soda) is a clear pink drink with the sweet-tart aroma of plum, soft and bright in color from the start. It was packed with ice and nicely cold, and a sip after the chicken left my mouth feeling fresh.
The mango wassoda, glowing bright yellow, had a sweet fruity aroma together with the refreshing fizz of carbonation.
Overall verdict on Daidokoro Gwangalli Main Branch
It was a meal of chicken nanban, Japanese-style kkanpunggi and cold udon in a cute Japanese-style space.
- Set meals with a variety of dishes neatly served
- Tender chicken paired with savory curry sauce
- Refreshing cold udon and bright fruit drinks
