Namcheon-dong BBQ shabu & pork belly set with secret salt: Geobugi

In short

Geobugi Dongne Namcheon Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant serving 14-day aged meat, right in front of Exit 1 of Namcheon Station in Suyeong-gu, Busan. At Geobugi Dongne we ordered the best-selling shabu-shabu & pork belly set, dipped thick slices of aged pork belly in the house secret salt, added kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) to the shabu-shabu, and finished with nurungji (scorched rice) from the pot rice and ice cream. Given the meat, the self-serve bar, the pot rice and the free dessert, Geobugi Dongne Namcheon Branch is great value for the price.

I kept hearing how good Geobugi Dongne (거북이동네) is lately. Lots of reviews said the meat is great and the prices are reasonable, a real value pick, so I got curious and went to see for myself.

It is really close to Exit 1 of Namcheon Station, so it is easy to reach by public transport. Having eaten there, I found the meat genuinely good for the price, and the self-serve bar, pot rice and dessert made the whole package better than I expected. It felt like great value.

Atmosphere and seating at Geobugi Dongne

The restaurant was much bigger than I expected, and most tables were divided by partitions. There were plenty of tables, so I never felt squeezed against the next table and could eat comfortably. Every table has a grill with a hood coming straight down above it, so even though it is a BBQ place, the whole space felt clean and pleasant.

What's on the Geobugi Dongne menu and what did we order?

The menu at Geobugi Dongne Namcheon Branch is varied: aged pork belly, pork neck, skin-on pork belly (oegyeopsal), pork jowl and gabrisal (the cut from the pork neck/ribeye area), plus beef and sets that include shabu-shabu. We ordered the shabu-shabu & pork belly set, which was marked as the best-seller.

On a day when you want meat and also something warm and brothy, this combination looked like a good choice.

How does the 14-day aged pork belly taste?

True to its name (geobugi means "turtle"), Geobugi Dongne is known for aging its meat slowly. I could see a separate aging fridge in the restaurant, and they say the meat is aged for 14 days. The slogan "14-day aged meat, tastier for being slow" suits the name well.

And it really hit home once I ate it. The meat was seriously good. The pork belly came out fairly thick, and grilled golden on the plate it was savory outside and still juicy inside.

It was hardly dry or chewy at all, and the fat-to-lean ratio was good, so it was delicious even on its own.

I put a little of the secret salt (비법소금) from the self-serve bar on a well-grilled piece of pork belly, and this combo was honestly better than I expected. The meat itself is so tasty that you don't need much on the side, and just a light dip in the salt brought out the savory flavor even more.

We cut it into bite-size pieces and grilled lettuce and garlic alongside, which was a classic pairing again. Considering you can eat aged meat at this price level, I personally found the value really good.

Shabu-shabu and kalguksu noodles in the shabu & pork belly set

The shabu-shabu & pork belly set comes with thinly sliced shabu-shabu meat, vegetables such as water dropwort (minari) and enoki mushrooms, and noodles. It feels different from pork belly, which was far better than eating just one kind of meat the whole time, and between bites of pork belly I could have warm broth and vegetables.

Eating meat nonstop can get a bit greasy, but with shabu-shabu alongside, it felt like it kept resetting my palate, so the combination worked well.

After eating a good amount of the shabu-shabu, we added kalguksu (knife-cut noodles). The broth had been simmered with meat and vegetables until it was rich, so when we added the noodles it soaked right in, and it was a nice hot way to finish. Meat, then shabu-shabu, then kalguksu: it made for a really filling set.

What's at the Geobugi Dongne self-serve bar?

The self-serve bar at Geobugi Dongne Namcheon Branch has lettuce and perilla leaves, plus onion, scallion shreds, garlic, chili peppers and other vegetables and side dishes that go well with meat, and you take as much as you need. Rather than having lots of banchan (side dishes) arrive all at once, I could bring only what I wanted, which I actually found more convenient.

Pot rice and nurungji: is it worth ordering?

When I looked up reviews before visiting, lots of people said you must try the pot rice at Geobugi Dongne, so we ordered it too. Haha.

As you'd expect from freshly cooked rice, it was glossy and the grains were sticky, good even on its own, and even better with a piece of meat on top. We poured water into the pot after scooping out the rice and made nurungji (scorched rice soup). Finishing a hearty meat meal with warm, nutty nurungji felt gentle on the stomach, and adding a bit of kimchi or pickles on top made it a treat.

We didn't order the jjageuri (a thick, spicy pork stew) this time, but after trying the pot rice I definitely want it next time. Hot jjageuri with freshly cooked pot rice sounds like a perfect match for grilled meat.

Dessert: ice cream and coffee

We finished at Geobugi Dongne Namcheon Branch with ice cream. I had no expectations, but it was honestly really good. The texture was super smooth and it melted in my mouth, which made it just right as a dessert after meat. I was full and still wanted another one, haha.

Coffee is also available on the other side.

Is Geobugi Dongne a good Korean BBQ spot in Namcheon-dong?

This time we had the shabu-shabu & pork belly set, but looking at the menu there is quite a range, from aged skin-on pork belly, pork neck, pork jowl and gabrisal to beef, so I got curious about the other dishes. It felt like a place I'd want to come back to for different cuts, not a one-and-done.

Considering the taste of the 14-day aged meat, the set that includes shabu-shabu, the free-to-use self-serve bar and pot rice, and the ice cream at the end, it was a place with quite high satisfaction for the price. It's close to Namcheon Station so access is easy, and the restaurant is fairly spacious, so it's a good pick if you're looking for meat in Namcheon-dong. Personally, I plan to go back for other aged cuts, plus the pork jjageuri & flash-frozen pork belly set that I couldn't try this time.
