Deer antler pills as a Chuseok gift for parents: Handong Hyoryeokhwan

As Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) approaches, I always end up wondering what to get my parents. Instead of the same kind of gift every year, I was looking for something they could take one at a time on their own, and that's how I came across Handong Nokyong Hyoryeokhwan, 30 pills.

Rather than being loose together, each pill is individually wrapped, which made it easy to take out just one at a time.

You can just leave the rest in the box as is, so there's no need to transfer them to a separate container each time. When traveling or heading out for a few days, you can just grab as many as you need — pretty low-hassle for parents to take daily too.

What caught my eye about Handong Nokyong Hyoryeokhwan was the manufacturing method. It's made using a 5-time kneading technique, based on 40 years of pill-making tradition.

According to the product page, this method is meant to reduce the chalky texture and bitterness typical of pills like this, making them soft and chewy in the mouth instead.

Being able to chew it slowly rather than just swallow it was another easy thing to explain to parents who are used to taking pills.

The 18 ingredients inside each pill

I also looked into the ingredient makeup of Hyoryeokhwan. It's said to be made with a blend of 18 ingredients in total, including New Zealand deer antler, agarwood, deer horn, and brewer's yeast.

Since this is a product I'm giving to my parents, I naturally ended up checking what's actually inside rather than just looking at the packaging. The product page has explanations for each ingredient, so I could look into whatever I was curious about one by one.

How Handong Hyoryeokhwan is made
