Maybe because September is my birthday month every year, it always makes me a little extra excited..☺️ For my birthday this time, I visited MUSEO, a Korean fine-dining restaurant in Yangjae. Here’s my honest review of MUSEO, where I got to enjoy familiar, comforting Korean food in a new way.

MUSEO, a Yangjae Korean Dining Spot for an Anniversary

When I celebrate a special occasion, I usually end up having a Western-style course meal, but this time I wanted something a little different: a Korean fine-dining course for a Gangnam date.

Modern Korean dining, MUSEO

So the place I chose was MUSEO, a Korean dining restaurant that presents seasonal ingredients with a refined sensibility. They say they select ingredients at their best each season, then complete Korean dishes in ways that preserve their natural flavors.

The first thing I felt upon entering was the ✨calm yet luxurious atmosphere✨. I worried that its basement location might feel stuffy, but it was actually cozy and lovely~ Rather than being overly flashy or intimidating, it had the neat, polished feel unique to Korean dining. There was also a private room on one side, which looked great for a more intimate meal❣️

Dinner Tasting Course Reservations and Birthday Perk

We visited after reserving the weekday-evening dinner tasting course. Reservations are available through Catch Table and Naver Reservation, and the restaurant operates by reservation only. A ₩50,000 deposit per person is required when booking!!

MUSEO birthday seaweed soup information

I heard that if you indicate in advance that it is your birthday when booking, they prepare birthday miyeokguk (seaweed soup), too. 🥂A Yangjae restaurant recommendation for anniversaries🥂 If you are visiting for your birthday, be sure to check the birthday option when reserving and enjoy this perk!

MUSEO Dinner Tasting Course

On recommendation, I ordered a bottle of Tuscan Italian red wine. For the dinner course, one alcoholic drink per person is required. They had plenty of options, including wine, traditional Korean alcohol, and non-alcoholic drinks.

They also offer an alcohol pairing course, so it looked like a great option for pairing Korean dishes with traditional drinks🍶

Scallion Tart and Steamed Egg

The appetizers were a Sinan scallion tart and steamed egg. The tart had the gentle smoky aroma unique to smoked scallions, and one bite revealed a crisp texture and such a lovely combination of scallion and cheese. The subtle smokiness plus nutty cheese made it impressive from the very first bite!

The steamed egg felt completely different from the kind I usually eat at home. It unusually contained anchovies, so among the soft egg were little bites of salty, nutty anchovy texture. It was familiar steamed egg, yet it tasted more elevated—delicious in a very different way.

Seafood Mulhoe and Tteokgalbi

The seafood mulhoe (chilled raw seafood soup) was plated so beautifully. It was generously topped with sweet shrimp and sea squirts, making me feel refreshed just looking at it~

The sweet-and-tangy broth was refreshing and savory, while the springy shrimp and the gently spreading aroma of sea squirt worked beautifully together. It really woke up my appetite~

The Korean beef tteokgalbi (grilled minced beef patty) was the definition of crisp outside and moist inside! 🌟The mustard sauce was the key🌟 One bite was full of juices, and the accompanying mustard-pine nut sauce was especially good. The sharp mustard aroma and nutty pine nuts were a perfect match for the tteokgalbi.

Wando Kelp and Goheung Braised Mackerel

Spreading Wando kelp butter over sweet, nutty brioche brought together salty savoriness and buttery aroma for an explosion of umami. Although MUSEO is Korean-based dining, it also has dishes with Western touches like this, making it great for experiencing a variety of flavors.

Brioche with Wando kelp butter

The Goheung braised mackerel, designed to evoke kimchi-jjim (braised kimchi stew), had wonderfully tender fish alongside spicy kimchi aromas. It was smoked with rice straw, which gave it such a good fragrance, with absolutely no fishiness. Putting the leftover brioche and mackerel together made for another delicious way to enjoy it.

My Favorite: Truffle Fries

These truffle fries were my favorite dish. First of all, they looked so pretty, and their little round shapes were adorable…🥔

As soon as they arrived, the intense truffle aroma hit me, and the pairing with the chewy-crisp potatoes was honestly incredible. The accompanying sauce was sweet with a truffle fragrance and went so well with the potatoes that I scraped up every last bit.

Seaweed Pesto Buckwheat Noodles and Pear Sherbet

Seaweed pesto buckwheat noodles combined the familiar base of perilla-oil buckwheat noodles with a salty seaweed sauce. The rich, creamy uni met the clean simplicity of buckwheat, doubling the nutty flavor. It was a familiar dish, but a distinctive noodle course with a completely different feel!!

The pear sherbet came as a refresher. It was sprinkled with lemon zest, so the clean pear and bright lemon flavors felt like they cleared the palate~ It was perfect for refreshing the mouth before the main dish🍧

A Hearty Chicken Leg Main

The generous main was a chicken leg plate. One bite in, the outside was beautifully browned and savory, while the meat inside was juicy and tender—far more delicious than I expected~ The gentle soy-sauce aroma and pepper sauce were the key to this chicken dish!!

There was mung-bean porridge underneath, adding varied textures and making it definitely filling. The pickled scallions served here and there were tangy and savory, so this main let me enjoy many different flavors on one plate~~

Makgeolli ice cream topped with soy-sauce crumble

Finishing with Makgeolli Ice Cream

The makgeolli (Korean rice wine) ice cream that closed the course was sweet and fragrant, with a soft, subtle makgeolli aroma spreading through it. The soy-sauce crumble gave little crisp bites, and its sweet-salty balance was lovely, making for a fun finish without a dull moment.

What impressed me about MUSEO was how it built on familiar Korean ingredients and flavors, adding unusual combinations and delicate touches to each dish. Every course changed in flavor and texture, so it never became boring, and even familiar foods felt new!

The conclusion of MUSEO Korean dining
Anniversary meal at MUSEO in Yangjae

I especially liked how the menu preserved each ingredient’s natural flavor while adding depth through sauces and accompaniments. The portions were more filling than expected, too, so I was satisfied with both the flavors and the composition at MUSEO😋 If you want an unusual Korean course meal for a special day, I recommend visiting MUSEO in Yangjae!
