Gasan BBQ, ₩14,000 galbisal & lemon highball: Choi Woo-young Gogiya

Choi Woo-young Gogiya (최우영고기야) is a Korean BBQ restaurant in the basement of Daeryung Post Tower 6 at Gasan Digital Complex Station in Geumcheon, Seoul, where the beef galbisal (short rib meat, 14,000 won) is fully cooked in the kitchen before it reaches the grill. After work, the writer and a friend shared 2 servings of galbisal, 1 serving of marinated galbisal and grilled king prawns, then added a highball with a whole lemon inside and yangnyeom gejang (spicy marinated raw crab). With good value, unlimited rice and generous free extras, Choi Woo-young Gogiya is a safe pick for after-work meetups with friends or team dinners.

Apgujeong burger lunch with friends: Egg Bulgogi Smash at Downtowner

Downtowner Cheongdam is a handmade burger shop between Apgujeongnodeo Station and Dosan Park in Gangnam, Seoul. The writer arrived with friends at the peak of lunchtime, got in without a wait, and ordered the Downtowner Burger, Egg Bulgogi Smash Burger and Avocado Burger as sets with sweet potato fries and garlic butter fries. The verdict: Downtowner Cheongdam's burgers come together so well that even people who aren't big burger fans would make the trip.

Apgujeong duck BBQ for 3 friends, whole marinated duck: Hwaju Yojeong

Hwaju Yojeong Duck Yojeong (화주요정 오리요정) is a duck BBQ restaurant near Exit 6 of Apgujeongnodeo Station in Gangnam, Seoul, known for fresh duck loin and marinated duck jumulleok (stir-grilled marinated duck). Three friends shared one whole marinated duck at an outdoor street-style table, then enjoyed complimentary duck soup and cheese rice-ball fried rice. With its open-air atmosphere and plenty of seating, Hwaju Yojeong Duck Yojeong is a solid pick for friend get-togethers and team dinners.

Beef BBQ date in Ansan: kkotgalbi, galbisal, free yukhoe at Yangsimso

Yangsimso Ansan Gojan Branch is a charcoal-grill beef BBQ restaurant near Jungang Station in Gojan-dong, Ansan. On a weekend visit, booked in advance, the writer and her boyfriend ordered one kkotgalbi (bone-in beef short rib) and one galbisal (boneless rib meat), with a free plate of yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew) and a cheese sausage from the review event. Yangsimso Ansan Gojan Branch works well for a beef date for two, and its bookable private room suits family dinners and work get-togethers.

Guwol-dong Korean BBQ: 20-a-day Two-Plus aged sirloin, Sip Sam Dae

Sip Sam Dae (십삼대) is an aged-meat Korean BBQ restaurant in Guwol-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon, near Yesulhoegwan Station, where staff grill the meat at your table. After a weekend stop at Lotte Department Store in Guwol-dong, the writer and her boyfriend shared the Two-Plus aged sirloin for two (260g), limited to 20 servings a day, then added pork belly and pork neck; the water-aged, lid-smoked sirloin came with a special sauce, wasabi and grilled pineapple. For easy, staff-grilled beef in a tidy setting, Sip Sam Dae's aged sirloin is a satisfying choice.

Yeonnam-dong pasta spot, 30-min wait, 4 spicy dishes: Hôtel de Couture

Hôtel de Couture (오뗄드꾸뜨) is a pasta and Western restaurant in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo, Seoul, near Hongik Univ. Station. A group of friends arrived around 1 PM on a weekend, waited about 30 minutes on the stairs, then shared carrot duck aglio e olio, honey bacon rosé pasta, jambon truffle cream risotto and egg in hell (eggs baked in spicy tomato sauce). Every dish at Hôtel de Couture runs slightly spicy, a lot for someone who can't handle heat but just right for the friends, and it is a Yeonnam-dong pasta spot worth the wait.

Omokgyo Chinese restaurant for 3 friends: whole cuttlefish jjamppong

Yugwanjang Banjeom (유관장반점) Omokgyo Station Branch is a 24-hour Chinese restaurant on the 2nd floor near Exit 2 of Omokgyo Station in Yangcheon, Seoul. Three friends meant to order tray jjajang (black bean noodles served on a platter) at the kiosk but accidentally ordered cuttlefish jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), then added seafood jjamppong, mini tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) and chili jjajangmyeon. The bone-broth seafood jjamppong and tender whole cuttlefish were satisfying, and the chili jjajang is a better pick than Sichuan jjajang for fans of chunjang (black bean paste) flavor, though it is quite spicy.

Dongtan pork gomtang restaurant for the day after malatang: Baekok

Baekok Dongtan is a Korean restaurant specializing in pork gomtang (clear pork soup) on the B1 dining floor of Lotte Department Store Dongtan in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. After malatang the day before left them with upset stomachs, two diners ordered one pork gomtang on its own and one set for a weekend lunch. They found the broth tasty without any extra seasoning, the pork pieces generous and the cabbage dumplings full of kimchi and meat flavor. Baekok Dongtan is worth recommending to anyone after a clean lunch that's easy on the stomach.

Incheon Terminal ramen date: jambon chashu, side seats, Menya Seoul

Menya Seoul Lotte Department Store Incheon Branch is a Japanese-style ramen shop on the B1 Food Avenue of Lotte Department Store Incheon in Michuhol, Incheon. On a lunch date, the writer ordered a jambon chashu ramen on its own and a spicy-broth dongpo chashu ramen set with Coke and gyoza, waited out the crowded seating for a table beside the shop, and added vinegar and chili oil. The ajitama egg came fully cooked, which was a slight letdown, but the wide spoons and the double portion for just ₩2,000 more made Menya Seoul a memorable meal.

Braised pork rib restaurant in Hwaseong: less-spicy ribs at Jeongdam

Jeongdam Dengalbi-jjim (정담 등갈비찜) is a Korean restaurant specializing in braised pork ribs on Jisan 2-gil in Yeongcheon-dong (Dongtan), Hwaseong. Two diners with a low spice tolerance ordered the Deliciously Spicy braised pork ribs slightly less spicy than standard, with DIY rice balls and Bongpyeong buckwheat pancake; the meat came off the bone easily, and their stomachs felt fine the next day. Jeongdam Dengalbi-jjim is a good Dongtan pick for anyone who loves spicy food but worries about their stomach.

Korean BBQ lunch date in Siheung Baegot before the outlets: Ssosam 208

Ssosam 208 Siheung Baegot Branch (쏘삼208 시흥배곧점) is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Baegot, Siheung, where Handon (Korean pork) is first seared over real charcoal and then grilled at the table by staff from start to finish. Before a date at Siheung Premium Outlet, the writer arrived right at the 12 pm weekend opening and ordered the Handon marbled pork belly set (pork belly + pork neck) with an extra steamed egg, then finished with spicy grilled pork skin. Ssosam 208 Siheung Baegot Branch is a good fit for a weekend lunch date when you want to eat Korean BBQ without lifting a finger.
