Shin Ramyun-spicy clam ramen at a Cheolsan Japanese spot: Hoka Hoka

Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch is a Japanese home-style restaurant near Cheolsan Station in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi, serving gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet), ramen and rice bowls. After work, the writer and her boyfriend ordered a 260g sirloin-cap gyukatsu and a spicy clam chashu ramen, rated about as hot as Shin Ramyun, both à la carte, and finished the refreshing clam- and bean-sprout-packed broth because it was never greasy. For ramen that isn't heavy alongside gyukatsu, the spicy clam chashu ramen at Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch is the one to order.

Pollock roe oil pasta at Two Find Peter, a Baegot pasta restaurant

Two Find Peter Baegot Branch is a pasta and pizza restaurant in Avenue Franc Central, Baegot, Siheung. On a late-evening revisit near closing time with her boyfriend, the writer ordered pollock roe (myeongnan) oil pasta, chicken potato pizza and ragu fries, and the pollock roe oil pasta, crunchy and slightly spicy with garlic scapes, was the standout. Two Find Peter Baegot Branch is a Baegot date spot worth returning to for the food alone.

Late Sunday duck BBQ in Siheung with radish wraps: Grill Duck

Grill Duck Hangari Barbecue is a duck restaurant on Beoman-ro in Siheung, near Starfield Bucheon. On a late Sunday evening, the writer split a half-and-half set of duck jumulleok (marinated duck) and fresh duck between a charcoal grill and a gas grill, added udon noodles, received a complimentary duck soup and paired the meat with mussam (pickled radish wraps) from the self-serve bar. With a 10% discount for tables with a soldier, police officer or firefighter and a large parking lot, Grill Duck Hangari Barbecue is a family dinner spot worth revisiting.

Jeongwang-dong BBQ: diamond-scored beef rib and scallop jeot, Samstar

Samstar Charcoal Grill (삼스타숯불구이) is a charcoal Korean BBQ restaurant in the central shopping district of Jeongwang-dong, Siheung, Gyeonggi. At dinner, the blogger grilled beef short rib meat, pork belly and giant galbi in turn, switching grills between cuts; the diamond-scored beef rib and the scallop jeot (salted fermented scallop) on pork belly stood out most. With free parking, an unlimited-refill self-serve bar and ₩2,500 bottles of soju and beer, Samstar Charcoal Grill is a strong pick for a group dinner in Jeongwang-dong.

Euljiro blind date Italian restaurant: octopus ink risotto, Athlonga

Athlonga is a stone-interior Italian restaurant and wine bar on the 3rd floor of 18 Dongho-ro 34-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul, near Exit 7 of Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station. On a weekday evening date, the couple ordered truffle cream gnocchi, Athlonga's signature polpo risotto (octopus ink risotto) and lemon butter pasta, and the wine-bottle door you press to enter and the crowd of blind-date diners even on a weekday stood out. Athlonga is a great date restaurant, but on a blind date skip the ink-black polpo risotto, which turns your mouth black.

Gimpo sundae-guk lunch date for a liver-hating couple: Paldam Sundae

Paldam Sundae Gimpo Main Branch is a sundae-guk (Korean blood sausage soup) restaurant on Ungok-ro in Janggi-dong, Gimpo, known for its handmade sundae omakase set and a self-serve organ meat bar. On a weekday day-off lunch date, the couple booked through Catch Table, waited almost an hour, and shared the 15,000 won omakase set with clear sundae-guk and Chef Lee Won-il's spicy sundae-guk; even though they normally dislike liver, they loved Paldam Sundae's moist liver, and the portions were big enough to leave food behind. Paldam Sundae is a Gimpo sundae-guk restaurant worth booking ahead, avoiding peak hours even on weekdays.

Friday night eel and duck neck refills in Ansan: Songnim Bok Jangeo

Songnim Bok Jangeo Wongok Branch is an all-you-can-eat grill restaurant in Wongok-dong, Ansan, serving unlimited freshwater eel, pork belly and duck neck. On a Friday evening after 8pm, the writer paid 29,900 won per adult for unlimited refills and grilled eel through three rounds. The complimentary bottle of bokbunja (black raspberry) wine was packed to go because they had driven. Eel topped with perilla leaf, ginger and green onion kimchi was the most satisfying bite at Songnim Bok Jangeo Wongok Branch.

Sangam-dong gyukatsu spot for a wedding invite dinner: Izawa Sangam

Izawa Sangam is a Japanese restaurant on Worldcup-buk-ro 50-gil in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, known for its gyukatsu set: aged beef striploin fried rare, then grilled yourself on a mini grill. After work one evening, the blogger met a former coworker for the first time in 8 years to hand over a wedding invitation and ordered the two-person set of two gyukatsu sets, cold soba and a soda. Izawa Sangam's spacious, quiet second floor suited a long wedding-invite catch-up well.

Suwon weekday dinner course with peach mousse and tomato granita: Hado

Hado is a course-dining restaurant on Hyanggyo-ro in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. The writer took a weekday off for her boyfriend's birthday and ordered the summer-only dinner course at Hado: Korean melon scallop salad, chilled chogye pasta, corn soup, chicken breast and chuck flap sous vide steaks, then peach mousse cake and tomato granita. Noting the birthday at booking brought a congratulatory message at the table and a lit candle, which makes Hado an easy pick for an anniversary dinner.

Starfield Suwon café with a Vietnam-style coconut latte: Jeong Jiyeong

Jeong Jiyeong Coffee Roasters Starfield Suwon Branch is a café on Gourmet Street, 2nd floor of the Starfield Suwon mall in Suwon, Gyeonggi, run by a coffee brand that started in Suwon's Haenggung-dong. A couple visited on a weekday afternoon and ordered the signature coconut coffee (coconut latte) and a strawberry latte packed with strawberry syrup, and rated the coconut latte the best since the one they first tried in Vietnam. Both drinks need a good stir, and with 6 hours of free parking at Starfield Suwon, Jeong Jiyeong Coffee Roasters makes an easy weekday café date.

Sinjung-dong Chinese restaurant with 66 seats: Jjambbong Jijon

Jjambbong Jijon Bucheon Jung-dong Branch is a cafe-style Chinese restaurant on Jungdong-ro in Sinjung-dong, Bucheon. The writer ordered one jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) and one jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) at the basic spice level plus a small sichuan tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and was impressed by the thoughtful touches at Jjambbong Jijon: free rice, mung bean sprouts and cheongyang chili at the self-bar, a drink corner set aside for delivery drivers, and even a tool for wiping stains off clothes. With 66 seats and 1 hour of free parking at the public lot out front, it suits family gatherings and solo meals alike.

Bucheon bakery weekend sellout and a next-day lunch loaf: Easy White

Easy White Bread Bucheon Sinjung-dong is a fresh milk bread bakery on Gilju-ro in Bucheon, Gyeonggi. On a weekend afternoon the olive cheese and soboro chestnut milk breads were already sold out, so the visit ended with a half-size Golden Beurre milk bread cut to 2cm and two Easy Brewing Coffees to go, one bright and acidic and one decaf. The loaf was saved for lunch the next day with pecan cream cheese, and it was best plain in the middle with cream cheese on the crusty edges.
