Today I headed to Songnim Bok Jangeo, a well-known spot near Ansan Station, for a tasty dinner after work.

Friday night 8pm, the mood at Songnim Bok Jangeo near Ansan Station
It was already past 8pm on a weekday evening so I thought the place would be nearly empty, but since it was Friday night, it was really packed!

What does the unlimited refill cost at Songnim Bok Jangeo Wongok Branch?
Luckily there was an open table and we sat right down. We ordered the adult unlimited refill — adults are 29,900 won, children are 14,000 won, and adults have an extra 3,000 won table setting fee.

The table setting fee comes with side dishes that go well with eel. And Songnim Bok Jangeo, a well-known spot in Wongok-dong, gives you a bottle of bokbunja (Korean black raspberry) wine as a service — this was really so nice!

On the wall, there were instructions for grilling eel well, plus a note on how well bokbunja wine pairs with eel! The line that cracked both of us up was the last one — something like "everything a man needs." Unfortunately we'd driven, so we just packed the bokbunja to take home,

and this time decided to just enjoy the pork belly and duck neck that came with the eel.

Grabbing eel, pork belly and duck neck from the self-bar
At first order, they bring out all the basic items, and after that, you can grab any extra side dishes and the main items — eel, pork belly, duck neck — yourself from the self-bar.

How to grill the eel at Songnim Bok Jangeo
First grill the eel skin-side down,
and once it's grilled a bit on both sides, cut off the fin part.
Then cut it into bite-sized pieces and lay them vertically.
Grill both sides until golden,

and then just eat however you like! Normally ginger is said to be the best pairing, but for me, the green onion kimchi at Songnim Bok Jangeo Wongok Branch was really amazing. I'm not usually a big fan of green onion kimchi since it's quite spicy, but strangely, eating it together with eel was so, so good!

Moving on to pork belly with charcoal airflow control
After eating a good amount of eel, we moved on to grilling the pork belly until golden. Since there's charcoal underneath the grill plate, you can control the heat by opening or closing the air vent. So we opened it while cooking eel and closed it while grilling the pork belly.
Just as we were about to dig into the pork belly—
we realized the ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) was missing! So we grabbed some along with lettuce wraps too, haha.

We grilled the duck neck until golden too.

The best eel combo, in my book
My pick for the best eel combination! Eel dipped in sauce on a perilla leaf, topped with ginger and the signature green onion kimchi of Songnim Bok Jangeo in Wongok-dong — that's it! 👍 Seriously, you have to try it exactly like this 🥹

If you're wondering what to order more of, it's obviously more eel!

So we enjoyed this tasty second round of eel,

and finally, one more round! A third round of eel wrapped up tonight's dinner. We came late and thought we'd definitely be the last customers, but thankfully that wasn't the case, haha!

After eating until full, we paid and tried the ginger jelly — wow... it's so spicy... haha.

Parking, location, and plans for next time
I was so sad we couldn't drink the service bokbunja wine with the eel, so next time I'll definitely come without a car so I can enjoy the bokbunja with the eel~
Songnim Bok Jangeo Wongok Branch, the place I'm introducing in today's post, has parking space behind the building, but it's a bit tight, so I'd recommend visiting without a car.
The location is 47 Wonseon-ro, 1F, Danwon-gu, Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. A place where you can enjoy delicious freshwater eel, pork belly and duck neck all on unlimited refill! I recommend it as a great spot for a Wongok-dong work dinner~~~
