Egg-free salt bread and ciabatta at Grid Cafe, an Ogeum-dong bakery

In short

Grid Cafe is a bakery café on Macheon-ro in Ogeum-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul, right beside Seongnaecheon stream. Visiting with a son who has an egg allergy, the writer was told the plain salt bread, crack salt bread and ciabatta contain no egg, and the ciabatta — a sugar-free, butter-free, egg-free, dairy-free vegan bread — was eaten by the adults as angbutter (red bean paste and butter). For anyone looking for a bakery a child with an egg allergy can eat at, Grid Cafe is a neighborhood regular with real choices.

Today I'm writing about Grid Cafe, a bakery café in Ogeum-dong that I stop by fairly often to grab bread to go.

I pass by here whenever I walk along Seongnaecheon stream, so I've bought bread here a few times already — but this time I visited with my son, who has an egg allergy, for the first time. When you go to a bakery with an egg-allergy kid, you end up double-checking everything: "Can he eat this?" "Does this have egg in it?" But I was so relieved that there turned out to be quite a few breads he could actually eat!

What kind of place is Grid Cafe? A bakery by Seongnaecheon stream near Ogeum Station

Grid Cafe is a bakery café in Ogeum-dong, Songpa-gu, right next to Seongnaecheon stream. It's already pretty well known in the neighborhood, and apparently it's even been featured on TV shows like Seomin Gapbu and Jangsaui Sin. Since they bake fresh every day and sell same-day, popular items can sell out if you visit late. If you're a fan of salt bread, it's worth a visit at least once.

What time does the bread come out at Grid Cafe?

Grid Cafe has separate release times for different menu items. Since we walk along Seongnaecheon often and stop by for takeout, I'd recommend timing your visit if there's a specific item you want.

Bread release times

  • 09:00–09:30 egg tart, salt bread
  • 09:30–10:30 scones, chocolate tart, jambon-beurre sandwich
  • 10:30–11:00 cream salt bread, ciabatta

At first I just showed up whenever, but after a few visits I realized it's definitely better to know the release times. Especially on weekends, if there's a specific bread you want, I'd recommend getting there a bit early!

Which breads can a child with an egg allergy eat?

On the day I visited, staff at Grid Cafe confirmed that the plain salt bread, crack salt bread, and ciabatta all contain no egg. Since my son was with me this time, this was the thing I checked most carefully of all.

If you're raising a kid with an egg allergy, you know how limited the bakery options really are. There have been times we left a bakery empty-handed despite all the bread on display, because there was nothing he could eat. Here, my son could actually pick something out for himself, and that was the best part. That said, allergy sensitivity varies by person and recipes or processes can change, so I'd still recommend double-checking ingredients at the store on the day you visit.

The egg tart and scones both contain egg, so we skipped those this time! Though I remember them being delicious from before, so next time it'll be mom eating those solo... :)

Plain salt bread vs crack salt bread: what's the difference?

Grid Cafe's plain salt bread is crisp on the outside and soft and moist inside — exactly my style. It has a buttery aroma without being greasy or heavy, the kind where you finish one and immediately reach for another!

The crack salt bread had a different charm from the plain version. The crispness on the outside felt a bit more pronounced, and the inside was soft yet chewy, with a nice bite. If you like salt bread, it might be fun to buy one of each and compare.

The sugar-free, butter-free, egg-free, dairy-free vegan ciabatta

Personally, the thing I was most excited about on this visit was Grid Cafe's ciabatta (Italian rustic bread). It's crisp outside and chewy inside, and apparently made without sugar, butter, egg, or dairy — a vegan bread. Since it skips not just egg but also milk and butter, anyone looking for vegan bread might want to keep this one in mind. The other ingredients in the ciabatta can vary, so please double-check before eating.

My son said he'd only eat the salt bread, so the ciabatta became a red bean butter (ssambutter) sandwich for the adults only. (Now that it's ssambutter, my son can't eat it.) We ordered a vanilla latte, and the mild sweetness paired perfectly with the not-too-sweet dessert^^

Drinks and how to order at Grid Cafe

Grid Cafe apparently uses Fritz beans for its coffee. It had a nice acidity and nutty flavor that went well with the salt bread. The drinks also looked pretty, making me want to try a few more. Ordering is done via kiosk, so you can pick your bread and drink easily all in one go.

Grid Cafe in a nutshell

  • ✔ A bakery in Ogeum-dong known for salt bread and egg tart
  • ✔ Separate bread release times, so you can catch it fresh out of the oven
  • ✔ Plain salt bread, crack salt bread and ciabatta confirmed egg-free
  • ✔ Sugar-free, butter-free, egg-free, dairy-free ciabatta
  • ✔ Right next to Seongnaecheon stream, great as a walking-course stop with kids
  • ✔ Baked fresh in-house and sold same-day

No parking on weekdays, but parking is available on weekends and holidays. It's a bit over a 10-minute walk from Ogeum Station, but since it's right next to Seongnaecheon stream, walking over on a nice day works well too. If you're someone who walks Seongnaecheon often with your kid like we do, it's a good spot to grab a bread on the way.

I already used to stop by for takeout sometimes, but after visiting with my son this time, I think I'll be coming even more often. For parents who, because of an egg allergy, always have to check what's edible first at every bakery, just having options here is such a relief. If you've been looking for a café in Ogeum-dong, a bakery near Ogeum Station, or a salt bread spot in Songpa, give Grid Cafe a try. Next time I want to time it right and finally try the cream salt bread :) Being able to walk Seongnaecheon with my kid and grab great bread — this is going to be a neighborhood favorite we keep coming back to.
