Yeoju dakgalbi with an unlimited lettuce self-bar: Seorak Makguksu

In short

Seorak Makguksu Chuncheon Dakgalbi Yeoju IC Branch is a charcoal-grilled dakgalbi (Korean grilled chicken) and buckwheat makguksu restaurant right in front of Yeoju IC in Gyeonggi. On a weekend day out in Yeoju, the writer ordered charcoal seasoned dakgalbi (16,000 won), charcoal soy sauce dakgalbi (16,000 won) and bibim makguksu (10,000 won), and helped themselves to as much lettuce, perilla leaves and side dishes as they wanted from the self-bar. Staff grilled the chicken from start to finish, so lunch was all talking and eating with no burnt meat to worry about.

We ordered three dishes: charcoal seasoned dakgalbi, charcoal soy sauce dakgalbi, and bibim makguksu.

How did the charcoal dakgalbi and bibim makguksu taste?

Table setting with bottled water and wet wipes

As soon as we sat down, they brought over bottled water and wet wipes. It's a small thing, but I really like it when they hand you a hygienic bottle of water like that.

The side dishes came out first in a row — cabbage salad and dongchimi (watery radish kimchi). Personally, the tangy dongchimi and cabbage were great to munch on between bites of dakgalbi.

Spread of side dishes including lettuce, pickled perilla leaves, and yeolmu kimchi

Lettuce, pickled perilla leaves, pickled radish, yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi), a special sauce, and sliced garlic — all neatly laid out.

When our dakgalbi arrived, I noticed this place uses 100% fresh chicken thigh meat, so the texture was really moist and tender! 🍗✨ And since it's grilled over real charcoal instead of gas, the subtle smoky aroma and juiciness were the best part.

What I appreciated most was that a staff member grilled and set everything up from start to finish, so all we had to do was chat with family while we waited.

Since they grilled it to just the right doneness for us, we could enjoy conversation without any worry about burning the meat 🙌

I tried the charcoal soy sauce dakgalbi first — sweet and savory, so it's a hit with everyone from little kids to grandparents 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

We also had some rice cakes grilled in between — rice cakes cooked over charcoal are always a treat. So delicious.

The charcoal seasoned dakgalbi wasn't overly spicy either, with deep savory flavor that really got our appetite going. We paired it with the spicy-tangy bibim makguksu!
