Gyeongju café with a Cheomseongdae chocolate latte: Cafe Bonghwangdang

Hi, I'm Renew. I traveled to Gyeongju to take part in the Infinite Challenge Run Gyeongju. Running was the main goal, but since I was already down there, I went sightseeing too. That's how I ended up at Cafe Bonghwangdang, a café on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju.

Cafe Bonghwangdang: the Gyeongju café where Daereungwon fills the window

Bonghwangdang is a two-story café on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, with Daereungwon tomb park filling its huge window. The outside is beautiful too, but the moment you open the door, that window is the first thing you see. It's so big, and the view outside so open, that Daereungwon looks like it's framed like a painting.

It's a big café with two floors, and each floor has a different mood. The 2nd floor sits higher, so the view is even prettier. There are also seats tucked slightly behind a wall toward the back, good for when you want some quiet.

The burial mounds roll gently across the view, with green trees standing above them. It's the kind of scene that makes it really sink in that you're in Gyeongju.

The whole display case is full of menu items that are gorgeous just to look at. I wanted to try, and buy, every single one. There was even sumakse (roof-end tile shaped dessert) that would make a lovely gift.

There's fun in exploring every corner

The real charm of this café is the space itself. Sit down and look around, and it feels like stepping into a small museum.

A 3-minute walk from Daereungwon, open from 8:30 a.m.

That view through the window is really something, right? Bonghwangdang is just a 3-minute walk from Daereungwon, so it's great to stop by before or after a stroll there. It sits one block off the center of Hwangnidang-gil, so it feels a little less crowded too. I got around by public transit this trip, and the whole area was easy to walk around.

It opens at 8:30 in the morning, so it's fine to drop by early too. That said, seats fill up fast, so if you want a window seat, I'd recommend getting there a bit early.

Inside Bonghwangdang: Silla-era pieces mixed with vintage furniture

Inside Bonghwangdang, roughly textured earthenware pieces are placed here and there, along with a jar hung with a small bell. A black tray table painted with a crane hangs on the wall. Details that evoke Silla are tucked into every corner, and they're not just decoration — they fit the concept of the space perfectly.

Mixed in with all this are vintage pieces like a brown leather sofa and a rotary phone. Old and new sit side by side, so there's plenty to photograph. I kept wandering around while waiting for my drinks.

On one side there are even pendant-style souvenirs symbolizing Gyeongju, so just browsing eats up plenty of time.

Bonghwang coffee, chestnut latte and the egg mayo croissant sandwich

Let me walk through what I ordered. First up, the signature Bonghwang coffee.

I also ordered the chestnut latte. It has that nutty, cozy chestnut flavor that suits fall so well. Perfect when you're craving something sweet.

For food, I picked the egg mayo croissant sandwich. The croissant was crisp and packed generously with egg mayo, great for filling up a hungry stomach after running.

The Bonghwangdang yeonhwagwa gift set I took home

I got the yeonhwagwa (lotus-flower shaped traditional confection) set to take home as a gift. Bonghwangdang's yeonhwagwa set comes packaged to go. It's a traditional dessert shaped like a lotus flower, and you can really taste the smooth, natural sweetness of the bean paste filling.

The taste is great, but the packaging is really what gets you. The box itself has that distinctly Korean look, made well enough that you could gift it just as it is. There's nothing better to hand someone when telling them you've been to Gyeongju. Apparently the sumakse cookie set and the mini cheesecake set are popular for the same reason.

The chocolate latte with a Cheomseongdae chocolate that melts in

The most fun part was the chocolate latte. It arrives with a Cheomseongdae (Silla-era star observatory)-shaped chocolate model sitting on top of the cup, and when you pour warm milk over it, the chocolate slowly melts down.

Watching Cheomseongdae collapse was so fun I recorded it on video. It's an experience you can only have in Gyeongju.

It's a special signature chocolate latte where you pour hot milk over a Cheomseongdae-shaped chocolate. Kids absolutely love it.

Who will enjoy Cafe Bonghwangdang?

I'd recommend it if you're looking for a place to rest during a Gyeongju trip, or if you want to snap some photos with a pretty view. It's also great if you want to handle gift-worthy desserts in one stop.

Next time I'm in Gyeongju, I want to come back in the evening. They apparently serve wine at night, so having a glass while looking out at the darkened tombs sounds like it'd have real atmosphere. If you're deciding on a café on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, definitely give Bonghwangdang a try.
