Gyeongju café with next-day chewy fruit mochi: Tareudang

In short

Tareudang is a takeaway dessert café in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, selling fruit mochi and tarts near Hwangridan-gil. Peach, whole mango, and gold kiwi mochi were generously filled with whole fruit and stayed chewy the next day after refrigeration. Verdict: a lovely fruit-packed dessert stop for a Gyeongju trip.

Tareudang location and parking

Tareudang, a popular Gyeongju fruit mochi spot, is near Ichini Sando and Hwangnam Ueong Gimbap, both well-known around Hwangridan-gil, so you can pick up Gyeongju desserts and other treats all at once.

Tareudang location near Hwangridan-gil

Not only is it convenient for buying treats, but it is also within walking distance of major Gyeongju sights such as Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae, making it a great place to stop for souvenirs after sightseeing!

Tourist attractions and parking near Tareudang

This is a takeaway-only shop, so there is nowhere to park right by the store. But many Hwangridan-gil restaurants and dessert shops do not have parking anyway, so it was not really an inconvenience. Nearby options include Hwangridan Parking Lot and Hwangnam-dong Public/Private Parking Lot.

A takeaway-only shop

Mochi being made continuously! Since the shop is takeaway-only, it is all counter space, with a display case where you can check out the fruit mochi and an area introducing desserts beyond mochi.

Fruit mochi menu and multi-buy discount

The fruit mochi selection changes with the season, and in summer, mango and peach especially caught my eye.

On the day I visited, they had fresh chocolate, fig, pineapple, gold kiwi, whole mango, and peach. Prices were in the ₩5,000–₩7,000 range! Buy four or more mochi and get ₩500 off each one, meaning ₩2,000 off four—so really, there is no reason not to buy several.

There are other desserts besides fruit mochi, too. True to the name Tareudang, tarts are ready to go, and seasonal fruit tarts and egg tarts seem to be the main offerings.

You can add a cooler bag for ₩1,000, and it may also be provided through a review event when you write a review, so I recommend getting one if you have a long journey ahead! It comes with one ice pack and should last about an hour in very hot weather or up to three hours when it is cool, so buy with your travel time in mind.

Peach, whole mango, and gold kiwi bojagi mochi

Bojagi mochi wrapped like hanji paper

They were wrapped in something like hanji, traditional Korean paper, and looked like tiny bojagi wrapping cloths—so cute.... I packed them up first, happily toured the sights, and decided to eat them once I got home.

Mochi packed to eat after sightseeing

Because the mochi were seriously so big that I felt like I would spill everything if I ate them outside.

Bojagi mochi that fills one hand

These bojagi mochi fill one hand. I bought peach, whole mango, and gold kiwi!! Tareudang’s fruit mochi were securely tied with rubber bands, and the mochi inside were wrapped once more in clear plastic—very sturdy packaging.

Which color was which flavor~~ I unwrapped them all first and neatly sliced them in half with a knife, and—oh my gosh—there was whole fruit inside. These fruit mochi had more fruit than rice cake. The pictures on the menu board were deceptive. There was even more fruit than in the pictures. All the fruit inside had ripened nicely, so it passed the fruit-flavor test, and the outer mochi was incredibly chewy and stretchy, which really brought the texture to life.

Chewiness that remained after refrigeration

Instead of the usual white powder on the outside of chapssaltteok (glutinous rice cake), Tareudang’s fruit mochi were coated in something like castella cake crumbs, which added a nutty note! The mango and peach had fruit with yogurt cream, while the gold kiwi had red bean paste, fruit, and cream. Personally, the gold kiwi, which I had expected the least, was most my style!! I ate the half I had left the next day after refrigeration, and the rice cake was still just as chewy, so if you buy a lot, it seems fine to eat it through the next day!

My overall take after trying them on a Gyeongju trip

Tareudang’s fruit mochi are a Hwangridan-gil dessert worth trying. The fruit was fresh and there was plenty of it, so I recommend them to anyone curious about fruit mochi on a Gyeongju trip! Popular items sell out quickly and can be hard to get once they are gone for the day, so going at opening is one option. If you are looking for desserts around Gyeongju’s Hwangridan-gil, definitely stop by!
