Bucheon Korean set meal, kimchi cheonggukjang over rice: Gim Myeongju
In short
Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang (김명주뜰안채밥상) is a Korean set meal restaurant in Jak-dong, Bucheon, near Kkachiul Station, where you build a full table by adding à la carte dishes to the 13,000 won per-person Tteuranchae Bapsang. We added charcoal-grilled pork and grilled mackerel to 12 banchan (side dishes), stone pot rice and cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) with kimchi, and the meaty grilled mackerel was the best dish of the day. With unlimited banchan and rice refills, Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang serves a table so good with rice that the rice almost ran out.

What is Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang in Jak-dong, Bucheon like?
Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang (김명주뜰안채밥상) is a well-known Korean set meal (hanjeongsik) place in Jak-dong, Bucheon. Today I was craving a neat, home-style meal, so I went. With a restaurant carrying a person's name like this, I had high hopes.

The signature dishes seem to be borigulbi (barley-aged dried yellow croaker), soy-marinated crab, charcoal-grilled meat and grilled mackerel. How to put it, the classic crowd-pleasers Koreans love. So I was even more excited.

Is that Master Gim Myeongju? A neat spread of dishes catches the eye, and every one of them looked delicious.

How does ordering work, and what does it cost?
If you're not getting the Tteuranchae set meal, you pick the Tteuranchae Bapsang plus at least one à la carte main. Note that the bapsang is served for every person seated, at ₩13,000 each. It's once you add the à la carte main that the meal is complete.
The à la carte mains are borigulbi, soy-marinated crab, charcoal-grilled pork, seasoned cockles and grilled mackerel. Prices are as shown on the menu.

The single set meals come as a full table, in the high ₩20,000s to low ₩30,000s. The cockle set and the mackerel set were tempting. The borigulbi and soy crab felt more like high-end dishes.

A table with charcoal pork and grilled mackerel added
This time I ordered the bapsang with charcoal-grilled pork and grilled mackerel. It came out so neatly, and this is exactly when you'd say the table legs are about to buckle. Every dish looked appetizing, and so tidy too. Cheonggukjang (stinky soybean stew) is included in the Tteuranchae set by default.

What's in the 12 banchan?
The banchan (side dishes) here show you what a 12-dish spread is supposed to be, and all of them are refillable. First, wrap vegetables come out, and the fried eggplant, that thing is a witch. Seriously delicious.
- Seasoned perilla leaves 1: bursting with savory flavor, salty, a total rice thief
- Namul (seasoned greens) 1: textbook namul flavor
- Kimchi: fresh, geotjeori style
- Japchae (glass noodle stir-fry): the dish that says "neat and proper" for a banchan spread

- Pickled shishito peppers: crunchy and tangy
- Namul 2: stir-fried with dried anchovies
- Potato side dish: beyond chewy, almost gel-like and sticky in texture
- Blue pickles (jangajji): crunchy and tangy
- Perilla leaves 2: maximizes the natural perilla flavor
- Seasoned bellflower root (doraji): tangy
Every one is a rice thief, so one bowl of rice isn't enough. The rice comes in a stone pot, and you can get refills if you run short.

How is the charcoal pork?
The charcoal-grilled pork has a subtle smoky flavor and is salty, and it was solidly good.

Today's best: the grilled mackerel
Today's best was the grilled mackerel. It was bigger than I expected, with lots of meat, and very tasty. Picking the bones out was a lot of fun.

The cheonggukjang that comes with it
The cheonggukjang in the bapsang is nostalgic home-cooked style, simmered with kimchi, and it tastes just like the one I remember. It tasted exactly like home, which honestly gave me goosebumps. And yes, it's insanely good. This alone is enough to finish a bowl of rice.

How to eat the stone pot rice, down to the nurungji tea
Open the stone pot and steam billows out. First scoop the top layer onto your small plate, then make sungnyung (scorched rice tea) right away.

The charcoal pork, grilled mackerel and cheonggukjang are the three mains, so I took close-ups. Every single one is delicious, and every single one is a rice thief.

The table is well stocked with tissues and wet wipes. There's an opener too.

Wrapped up in the vegetables like this, how good do you think it is? Insanely good. The ssamjang (wrap sauce) is decent too.

Self-serve bar with unlimited banchan and rice
At Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang, all the side dishes except the mains, plus the rice, are unlimited. With such generous, varied banchan, all of them rice thieves, I ran out of rice and went to the self-serve bar for more.

Once I scooped out the cheonggukjang, it looked like there was no way not to mix rice into it. So in the rice went. Insanely good... I have to go back to Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang, seriously. I can still taste all of it in my head, haha.
