Today I'm writing up my visit to Palmi Jogae Kalguksu, a place in Mullae-dong that's earned word-of-mouth fame for its hearty, refreshing broth. On days when you're craving a cool, savory broth, nothing beats kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup). I was in Mullae-dong recently and stumbled onto a real gem that nails both value and taste — Palmi Jogae Kalguksu, known around here as the go-to Mullae shabu kalguksu spot!

The alleys of Mullae-dong are full of trendy cafés and good restaurants, but if you're after a tidy, deep-flavored Korean restaurant in Mullae, this is the one I'd recommend without hesitation. Here's my rundown of a visit that turned out to be more satisfying and better value than I expected.

Where is Palmi Jogae Kalguksu, and what is the group seating like?

A spacious, clean interior — perfect for a group gathering near Mullae Station!

It's an easy, comfortable walk from Mullae Station, so accessibility is great. The building's exterior is pretty, and the moment I stepped inside, I loved the clean, spacious feel. The tables are generously spaced and the layout is efficient, making it a perfect choice for a group gathering near Mullae Station — company dinners, family get-togethers, that kind of thing.

They also have a separate private room, which is a nice touch. These days booking a spot big enough for a group can be stressful, but with the relaxed vibe and well-planned table arrangement here, even a large party can eat comfortably.

How big is the clam shabu kalguksu, and is it good value?

Top-notch value — the sheer volume of the clam kalguksu and shabu will win you over.

First off, the menu is varied and prices are really reasonable. Plenty of side dishes too, which made everything more fun to dig into!

The moment our clam shabu kalguksu, the signature dish, arrived, I gasped at the portion. Fresh clams and vegetables piled high — it passed the visual test before I'd even taken a bite!

As the broth started to boil, a subtle, refreshing clam aroma spread out and really got my appetite going. The clam meat was plump and chewy, fun to pick out one by one, and well-purged so there was no grit — clean eating all the way through.

  • Deep, refreshing broth: brewed from fresh clams, so the flavor is deep and clean. Not artificial-tasting at all — it left my stomach feeling settled and warm.
  • Tender shabu meat: as the broth comes to a boil, briefly cook the shabu meat and eat it with the clams — the meaty savor and seafood umami pair beautifully.
  • Chewy kalguksu noodles: after picking through the meat and clams for a while, add the noodles and cook them in the broth. The noodles were bouncy and soaked up the broth perfectly — satisfying down to the last bite.

Side dishes, fresh geotjeori kimchi, and abalone porridge for dessert

A well-prepared Korean restaurant known for its kimchi. Kimchi is such an important thing at a Korean restaurant! You could even say a great geotjeori (fresh-tossed) kimchi makes or breaks a kalguksu spot — and this kimchi is spicy-sweet yet crisp, a fantastic match for the broth and noodles. A bite of kalguksu topped with a crunchy piece of kimchi kept me going without ever getting tired of it.

Overall the portions were really generous, so I ate until I was full, and given today's prices, the cost felt more than reasonable — the phrase 'great value' came to mind immediately. It was the perfect meal to warm and fill me up.

On top of that, Palmi Jogae Shabu Kalguksu lets you order abalone porridge for dessert, and it was absolutely delicious too. It had a wholesome flavor, and again, top-notch value.
