Eungam Station izakaya with ceviche-sauce flounder sashimi: Moonfall
In short
Moonfall is a neighborhood izakaya on Galhyeon-ro 1-gil near Eungam Station in Eunpyeong, Seoul. On a return visit, the writer ordered aged large flounder sashimi (35,000 won) and seafood tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes, 19,000 won), loved the ceviche sauce you finish with a squeeze of lemon and the brothy tteokbokki packed with wheat rice cakes, but was disappointed when a broken Asahi draft machine meant the beer came out with no foam; the three beers were taken off the bill at checkout. For the food alone, Moonfall is a bar worth recommending near Eungam Station.

Moonfall, an izakaya near Eungam Station: why I came back
I revisited Moonfall, the izakaya near Eungam Station, this time too. Yes, some of my own money went into this review, but this is my space, so there are no lies here. I don't like the packed, chaotic bars of Yeonsinnae or Eungam intersection. I like a neighborhood bar right by my home, and nothing beats Moonfall~
The location is a clear plus, but the atmosphere is really nice too, and above all the food is delicious!!! It's a bar near Eungam Station I leave satisfied from every single time~
🕖 Closed every Monday / 🕠 Tue–Sun 17:00–02:00 / ❗️Last order at 01:00

The owner named it Moonfall (문폴), meaning "the moon falls," and there really is a huge full-moon sculpture in front of the shop haha

Moonfall seating and atmosphere: good for drinking alone?
Inside Moonfall there are about 7 tables and even seats that work for drinking alone, so I think it's great for anyone looking for a solo-drinking bar near Eungam Station. You can see the atmosphere is really good, right? 😭
By "good atmosphere" I don't mean fancy and luxurious ❌ I mean you can stay comfortably ⭕️ Though the tableware and interior at Moonfall do feel elegant haha

Moonfall menu and what we ordered
The Moonfall menu is hugely varied, from the daily special to sashimi, Western-style pasta and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), and grilled or fried dishes like stir-fried clams, uopei-yaki and grilled silver cutlassfish. The daily special that day was blanched turban shell (chamsora), and the owner was busy prepping huge shells the whole time...^^
- Aged flounder sashimi - ₩35,000
- Seafood tteokbokki - ₩19,000
- Saero - ₩4,000 × 2
On my last visit I had salmon, yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), and some kind of stew too, and all of it was delicious 😭😭 That's why I came again 😭😭 Highly recommended as a bar near Eungam Station!
The kitchen is honestly... cleaner than my home... My place has lots of women, so there's hair all over the floor... a disaster, while at Moonfall the space itself and the kitchen tools are all spotless. If you sit at the bar seats, watching the cooking would be fun too.

The complimentary side dishes change each time, and that day it was peanuts and braised quail eggs~ Why doesn't my homemade jangjorim (soy-braised side dish) ever taste like this? Sweet and salty, so good 😭

The letdown: Asahi draft beer with no foam
This is the part that disappointed me that day 🥹🥹 I ordered three glasses of Asahi draft beer at ₩8,000 each, and as they brought them, they said the draft machine was broken and there was no foam?
I think the right moment to ask "shall I serve it anyway, or cancel the order?" is when you pour and realize there's no foam, so I was pretty baffled, and of course it tasted terrible... We each took one sip, decided it was just wrong, and handed them back, and at the bill they cancelled the three beers without saying anything.
The Moonfall owner I know is someone who would ask "serve it anyway or cancel?" before bringing out beer like this!!!!!!!!!!!!! Luckily they cancelled it so it wasn't a big problem, but this episode disappointed both me and my older-sister friend and her partner who came along. They like Moonfall too, so it was their repeat visit as well 😭

Moonfall aged flounder sashimi: what does the ceviche sauce taste like?
The Moonfall aged flounder sashimi (₩35,000) comes with soy sauce plus a ceviche sauce, and generous wasabi, rakkyo (pickled scallions), pickled ginger and washed kimchi (ssitgeun-ji) to go with it. They told us to squeeze the lemon served alongside into the ceviche sauce and mix... wait, what IS this sauce.......?

I'd never even heard of ceviche in my life and only learned this sauce existed that day. I looked it up and it seems to be quite a famous sauce to eat with flounder, and it's so so so so so so good. How do I put it, it just goes sooo well with it.

It's an oil-based sauce that you'd think would go well with baguette, but it pairs this well with raw fish?! Deliciously aged flounder meeting the crazy-good ceviche sauce = I stopped even looking at the soy sauce...

Moonfall seafood tteokbokki: how much wheat rice cake and seafood?
I ordered the Moonfall seafood tteokbokki (₩19,000) because eating only light flounder sashimi would feel unsatisfying. It was topped with plenty of perilla leaves, which looked great, and inside it was packed with extras, living up to the name.

For some reason the cabbage in the tteokbokki is so good~ and there were plenty of fairly big, springy shrimp, plus squid, mussels and more. Above all, these wheat rice cakes (mil-tteok) are insanely good 😭😭 They're exactly my style: dense, smooth and plump.

The flavor is pleasantly sweet with a seafood aroma, the familiar delicious seafood tteokbokki taste! You can adjust the spice level, and I think ordering it spicy would be fine?! The broth is so good that eating it soup-tteokbokki style, scooping it up with a spoon along with the rice cakes, is the best, and soju clings right to your tongue. For anyone looking for a bar near Eungam Station with great snacks, it's simply Moonfall.

Moonfall near Eungam Station: would I go again?
They gave us a little leftover turban shell they'd been prepping, and what is that 😭😭 Of course it's delicious... it's amazing...
The draft beer thing was a real letdown, but they didn't charge for it~ and since the owner I know isn't normally like this, I was able to treat the day as a one-off mishap and move on. The food is just delicious across the board, so I highly recommend it as an izakaya near Eungam Station! I'm of course willing to come again, and next time I hope I get a properly poured Asahi draft 😭
