Late-night tteokbokki after Han River fireworks: Hyeonseonine Yongsan

In short

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a stir-fried rice cake (tteokbokki) restaurant on Yongridan-gil, between Yongsan Station and Sinyongsan Station in Seoul. Even arriving late at night after watching fireworks over the Han River, there was still a long waiting line, but the tteokbokki-and-fried-rice combo, finished with cheese, seaweed flakes, and a crispy scorched-rice bottom, was worth every minute. An addictive, belly-warming late-night meal.

This day was actually a really special one! I was heading to the Han River to watch fireworks, and I knew that once I'd had my fill of oohing and aahing, I'd be starving. So while scouting food near Yongsan beforehand, I'd already bookmarked Hyeonseonine Tteokbokki, famous as a tteokbokki mecca!

But then, on the bus I was riding... something caught my eye in the most decisive way. In the hands of a sweet couple (newlyweds, maybe?), there was a shopping bag with a logo printed clearly on it... and yes, it was the exact Hyeonseonine takeout bag I'd been planning to eat from! ❤️

Oh... this is a sign from the heavens! Fate has clearly decided I'm eating tteokbokki tonight...!

I'd already come out planning for today to be a full-on 'eat everything' day, and after seeing that fateful shopping bag, my feet just automatically carried me toward Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch 🏃

Waiting even late at night? The vibe at Hyeonseonine on Yongridan-gil

The moment I got near the shop, I could feel the hot-spot energy! Between Yongsan Station and Sinyongsan Station, along the currently trendy Yongridan-gil restaurant row, Hyeonseonine's status was clearly a cut above the rest.

Honestly, by the time the fireworks ended it was pretty late at night, so I thought, 'Well, it should be less crowded by now, right?' and headed over casually... but nope! There was still a long waiting line stretching out front even at that late hour?! Inside, the place was packed and buzzing with customers, and the air was thick with the smell of delicious tteokbokki sauce and savory fried snacks.

I heard they started out as a small street cart back in 2004 and have now grown into a major brand running eight directly-operated branches — and yeah, you could really feel that legend-status, time-tested presence.

Order by kiosk, then grab your things at the self-serve bar

Okay, we finally grabbed a seat and placed our order at the kiosk! Our top pick for the day was the combo of instant tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes), cooked right at the table, paired with instant fried rice 🥘

We grabbed water, small plates, and a ladle from the self-serve bar. This instant tteokbokki tends to splatter, so an apron is basically mandatory!

Bubbling away, addictive as ever: instant tteokbokki

Classic tteokbokki is always great, but on this particular night, with the fireworks still lingering in my mind, I was really craving the spicy version cooked right on the table's induction burner!

The tteokbokki arrived filling the whole pot, and as it started to boil... wow, that signature scent where spicy and sweet cross paths just perfectly hit me right in the nose.

Once the sauce has really soaked into the rice cake, you take a bite with a bit of the broth, and—

Spicy, sweet, and that heavy, lingering aftertaste — insanely addictive!

The chewy, springy texture of the wheat-flour rice cakes combined with that sweet-and-spicy sauce is honestly amazing. It's the kind of flavor you never get tired of, no matter how much you eat 🤤

Tteokbokki with soju? The snack-pojangmacha vibe

One fun thing I noticed while eating — I glanced over at the tables next to and behind us, where groups of coworkers and friends were downing tteokbokki with a ton of soju?! 🍶

You'd usually think of things like Kool-Pis or soda at a typical snack restaurant, but Hyeonseonine sells cool slushies, draft beer, and even soju, giving it a full-on 'snack pojangmacha (street-tent bar)' feel!

Watching everyone take a spoonful of that spicy tteokbokki broth followed by a sharp shot of soju... I decided that next time I visit, I'm throwing my own 'tteok-soju' party — spicy tteokbokki paired with a glass of soju 🍻

Finishing it off with cheese-loaded fried rice

Once you've properly scooped up all the tteokbokki bits, what's next? Of course — it's K-dessert fried rice time!

Cheese and seaweed flakes added to the fried rice ingredients

Into the small remaining pool of that addictive tteokbokki broth goes rice, seaweed flakes, sesame oil, and a generous amount of savory cheese, all stir-fried together 🍳 Press it down a bit so a scorched-rice layer forms at the bottom, then scoop up a big spoonful... wow, it's a real umami bomb going off in your mouth. The spicy-sweet sauce-coated rice grains provide the perfect finish 👍

Still feeling the glow of the fireworks, filling my belly warm and satisfied at a Yongsan tteokbokki spot that felt like fate found me late at night — it was such a happy night!
