Late-lunch sellouts at Padong, a Mangwon Station Japanese restaurant

Looking for somewhere to eat lunch in Mangwon-dong, I ended up at Padong, a Japanese restaurant.

What kind of restaurant is Padong?

Padong serves a wide range of Japanese dishes, from rice bowls to soba, futomaki (thick sushi rolls), and tempura. The futomaki and basil soba seem to be especially popular.

I went a bit late for lunch, so most of the crowd had cleared out and I could eat quietly.

The problem was that the futomaki and tuna rice bowl—the two things I most wanted—were both sold out due to running out of ingredients. T_T I came here just for those, haha.

If futomaki and the tuna rice bowl are your goal, don't go late like I did—visit a bit earlier.

Futomaki and tuna rice bowl had been floating around in my head the whole way there, so hearing they were out was a small moment of panic, haha. But everything I ordered ended up so good that I completely forgot what I'd originally come for.

Where Padong is and where to park

Padong's address lists it as B1F, 47 World Cup-ro 17-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea, but it's not actually underground.

It's a sunny ground-floor space—you just walk down a few steps to get there, which is probably why the building classifies it that way.

It's about 250m from Mangwon Station Exit 2, so easy to reach by subway, and close to Mangwon Market too. Good route if you want to grab a meal and then browse Mangwon Market or Mangri-dan-gil afterward.

Given the neighborhood, there's no dedicated parking lot for the restaurant. I used a nearby shared parking lot, which worked fine. A public parking lot near Mangwon Market should also work, but honestly Mangwon-dong is the kind of neighborhood where it's easier to come by public transit and just walk around than to worry about parking.

Five dishes ordered by two people

With futomaki and tuna rice bowl off the table, we quickly changed strategy.

Steak rice bowl,

salmon rice bowl,

cold soba,

and karaage and fried shrimp. Yes, this was all for two people. We're big eaters, haha.

With that many dishes ordered, I worried they'd come out one by one, slowly—but they all arrived at nearly the same time, which was great.

How were the steak and salmon rice bowls?

Bottom line: everything was delicious.

The steak rice bowl pairs skirt steak and vegetables with a special sauce—the meat was tender and went really well with the rice.

If you like salmon, the salmon rice bowl speaks for itself.

Ordering a cold soba on the side was also a good call. Between bites of rice bowl, a mouthful of cold soba was refreshing and clean—perfect for cleansing the palate.

The karaage and fried shrimp came out crispy and fried well too, great as sides. They stayed crunchy till the very last bite.

I genuinely can't even convey how good it was, haha.

Padong's atmosphere and the verdict

The restaurant isn't huge, but it's quiet and clean.

Mostly 2-top tables, so it's great for a meal with a friend or a lunch/dinner date in Mangwon-dong. The tables are set up so they're easy to combine, so groups of 4 or more should be fine too—it seemed like a good spot for gatherings.

The owner seems to love cute things—there are cute characters and knick-knacks scattered around inside and outside the shop. It was fun spotting them one by one while waiting for the food.

Most of all, I was satisfied since the steak rice bowl, salmon rice bowl, cold soba, and fried dishes we ordered that day were all delicious.

But there's still unfinished business. Next time, I'm definitely going early to get the tuna rice bowl and futomaki.
