Mild Korean set meals near Hansung University Station: Seochon Nugak

In short

Seochon Nugak is a Korean rice-set restaurant in a Seongbuk-dong alley near Hansung University Station in Seoul. The writer and her husband ordered a beef tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) rice bowl topped with shiitake mushrooms, a Jeju-style tot bap (rice with hijiki seaweed) with abalone and scallops, and beef yukjeon (pan-fried beef), and everything from the seaweed soup to the side dishes was seasoned gently rather than boldly. Quiet and neatly kept, Seochon Nugak suits a lunch out with older parents or a calm meal for two.

Today I'm sharing the story of Seochon Nugak, a Seongbuk-dong restaurant I got to visit with my husband through a nice opportunity!! If you're looking for a good spot near Hansung University Station or in Seongbuk-dong, save this one right now ✨ I'd been really craving a healthy home-cooked meal lately, and after eating here I thought, ah, this is what real food tastes like ㅠㅠ

What Seochon Nugak looks like inside and out

The exterior is simple and tidy, so it really stood out among the Seongbuk-dong alleys. Rows of colorful potted plants lined up under a clear awning gave off a sense of how much care the owner puts in 🌿

Interior of Seochon Nugak with white walls and plant frames

Push open the orange door and inside it's all white-toned walls with plant frames and real potted plants filling every corner. The window seats get such good sunlight too, the whole atmosphere was lovely ☀️

I liked that the seating — mustard-colored chairs with wood-tone tables — is split up a bit privately at each table with glass partitions.

Seochon Nugak's menu: can you eat alone here?

Seochon Nugak menu listing rice sets, hot pots, and à la carte dishes

Looking at the menu, rice sets (bansang) are the main thing, with hot pots and à la carte dishes on the side. It's noted that single portions can be ordered too, so solo diners should be able to visit without worry 👀

We ordered two dishes: 🍚 a beef tteokgalbi rice bowl topped with shiitake mushrooms, and 🐚 a Jeju-style tot bap topped with abalone and scallops!

Right off the bat, the look of it screams healthy home cooking.

Tteokgalbi with sauce, braised shiitake mushrooms, and julienned radish

Glossy sauce sits over the tteokgalbi (grilled minced short rib patty), with braised shiitake mushrooms, crisp romaine lettuce, and spicy-tangy julienned radish packed onto one plate. Bite into the tteokgalbi and the juices burst out, but it's not greasy at all — light and clean, the kind of flavor that kept pulling my chopsticks back. Eaten with rice, it filled me up in a way that felt healthy and satisfying at the same time haha

Jeju-style tot bap with abalone and scallops

This one is completely showy visually!! Abalone, scallops, sweet-and-sour radish salad, black sesame namul — the colors alone were so pretty I couldn't stop taking photos 📸 The abalone had that springy texture still intact, and the scallops were chewy with a freshness you could really taste.

Mix it all up with the tangy radish salad and it's exactly the kind of dish you crave when you have no appetite. Highly recommend for seafood lovers 🧡 The seaweed soup and side dishes were great too — the rolled-omelette-style pan-fry was fluffy and nutty, the kind of thing kids would love,

Seaweed soup with broccoli, braised lotus root, and other side dishes

and the seaweed soup was rich and savory, the kind of broth that settles your stomach. Broccoli, bean sprouts, braised lotus root, pickled cucumber — every single side dish was seasoned mildly and healthily rather than sharply, so I emptied the plate without any guilt haha

Beef yukjeon, pan-fried in egg batter

A full plate of Seochon Nugak's beef yukjeon

The yukjeon (pan-fried beef) here was honestly a real surprise. A whole plate piled high with golden-fried beef came out, and just from the egg-battered look of it you could tell it was made with care.

A piece of beef yukjeon held with chopsticks alongside pickles

Pick it up with chopsticks and it's crisp outside, soft beef all the way through inside. Pull a piece apart and it shreds right along the grain — the texture was quite tender. It can be a rich dish, but paired with the crisp pickles served alongside, it cleaned up your palate and made you keep reaching back for more — a bit of a magic combination 🥒

Is Seochon Nugak worth a visit, and who is it for?

The full Korean meal spread eaten at Seochon Nugak
  • ☑️ A mild, healthy home-style meal without sharp seasoning — not common to find in Seongbuk-dong
  • ☑️ An atmosphere that works both for taking parents out and for a quiet meal as a couple
  • ☑️ From seafood dishes to hearty meat dishes, there's something for every taste — I'd 100% go back

It was a day of eating well and healthily. Next time I really want to try the hot pot menu too ٩(^‿^)۶ If you're looking for a good spot in Seongbuk-dong or near Hansung University Station, I highly recommend Seochon Nugak!
