Seongbuk-dong lunch spot with Jeju tot bap rice bowl: Seochon Nugak

Mornings and evenings have gotten pleasantly cool lately, perfect walking weather. On my husband's day off, we decided to have a quiet lunch together and stroll through Seongbuk-dong, a neighborhood I love walking.

Seongbuk-dong isn't flashy, but the mix of old houses, alleyways, and small shops makes it a place I always want to keep walking through. For lunch that day we chose Seochon Nugak, a spot known for neat, home-style Korean food.

When we arrived, it turned out to be on the first floor of Munhwa Sikdang, a place our family visits often! Even though it's close to home and we go there a lot normally... Seochon Nugak only serves lunch, so it was hard to find the time to come! Anyway, let me introduce it!

Seochon Nugak is on the first floor of 88 Hyehwa-ro, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, across from Seongbuk Elementary School. As of the latest notice, it only operates for lunch, 11:00–15:00.

Since it now mainly operates for lunch, definitely check the hours before visiting. Especially if you want the Nugak feast-table course, it's best to reserve ahead.

Finding Seochon Nugak in the Seongbuk-dong alleys

Walking down the Seongbuk-dong street toward Seochon Nugak, we saw red chili peppers spread out to dry. It's right in the middle of Seoul, but for a moment it felt like we'd stepped into a countryside grandmother's house, and my husband and I both stopped to take it in, haha.

Coming across these little scenes is what makes walking through Seongbuk-dong so charming. Strolling slowly in the cool breeze on our way to a warm home-style lunch, it really matched the mood of the day.

What we ordered at Seochon Nugak, and what the room is like

Grilled pork belly rice bowl with special sauce, 17,000 won

We ordered three dishes: the grilled pork belly rice bowl with special sauce, Jeju tot bap topped with abalone and scallop, and shiitake mushroom and plump shrimp gangjeong.

I loved that the grilled pork belly bowl wasn't just a single bowl plopped down — it came laid out neatly with side dishes like a proper table setting. It's a great choice when you want a hearty, filling meal, and even coming alone, you'd feel like you're being served a real, proper meal.

It had that gochujang-based, jeyuk-style flavor, but it wasn't harsh or spicy — more sweet and mellow, the kind that gets your appetite going! My husband ordered it, but I ended up eating a lot of it, haha.

Jeju tot bap with abalone and scallop, 15,000 won

This is exactly the kind of rice dish that makes me want to recommend Seochon Nugak as a healthy home-cooking spot in Seongbuk-dong. Abalone and scallop are placed on top of Jeju tot bap (seaweed rice), and just from the ingredient combination alone it felt like a genuinely healthy meal.

This dish also came out neatly arranged like a full table setting, so it looked just as tidy as it tasted. I think this is a comfortable place for anyone who prefers Korean food that highlights the natural flavor of ingredients over heavily seasoned dishes.

Shiitake mushrooms with plump shrimp gangjeong, 15,000 won

Ordering two rice dishes alone felt like it wasn't quite enough, so we also picked the shiitake mushroom and plump shrimp gangjeong. It let us enjoy both mushroom and shrimp together, and paired nicely alongside the two rice dishes.

If the rice bowl and the tot bap each work as a full meal on their own, the gangjeong was the dish that made the table feel a little more abundant. Ordering all three together let us taste a good variety of ingredients and textures, which worked out well for the two of us sharing.

Next time at Seochon Nugak: the Nugak feast-table spread

Seochon Nugak also offers a hanjeongsik (Korean table d'hôte) course called the Nugak feast-table course. Since it lets you experience a variety of dishes at once, we're planning to reserve ahead and try it next time.

It's great for a solo lunch of a neatly arranged table setting, and if you want something a bit more elaborate to share with parents or friends, booking the feast-table course could be a good option too.

Walking through Seongbuk-dong with my husband after a while, running into that cozy alley scene, and finishing with a clean, tidy Korean lunch turned an ordinary weekday morning into a pretty enjoyable date.
