Cheonho food alley chicken galbi with free fried gizzards: Ondogye
In short
Ondogye is a charcoal chicken galbi restaurant with a main hall and an annex in the Cheonho food alley (also called Jjukkumi Alley) in Gangdong, Seoul. Ondogye lets you order single servings of each flavor from the very first order, so this family dinner covered garlic salt, soy sauce and spicy chicken galbi plus salt-grilled chicken neck meat, with a plate of crispy fried chicken gizzards served free. The thick chicken galbi, seared over charcoal first and then finished at the table by staff, was juicy with no gamey smell — next visit starts with the chicken neck meat.

Main hall full, annex full too The definition of charcoal-grilled chicken galbi, filled with smoky aroma Ondogye

Why Ondogye draws the longest line in Cheonho's food alley
We came to Ondogye for dinner in Cheonho Jjukkumi Alley (chili-marinated octopus street). There are plenty of restaurants on this street, but this one had noticeably more customers than the rest. The main hall was already full and there were people waiting even for the annex. Guests kept streaming in the whole time we ate, but luckily it was well air-conditioned and tables turned over pretty fast.

With so many customers, I was curious how the food would actually taste — and to cut to the verdict, my family called this the best charcoal chicken galbi of our lives, it was that soft with such good aroma and flavor.
Writing this review, I checked the restaurant's website and sure enough, chefs Lee Won-il and Hong Seok-cheon had both raved about this place.

Charcoal chicken galbi that arrives already seared

From outside, we could see the staff pre-grilling the chicken over charcoal. The whole alley was already full of that delicious charcoal aroma haha 😄
All four chicken galbi flavors at Ondogye, tasted side by side

At most other places you have to order two servings minimum on your first order, but Ondogye lets you order single servings of each flavor right from the start, so we ordered a bit of everything — garlic salt chicken galbi, soy sauce chicken galbi, spicy sauce chicken galbi, and salt-grilled chicken thigh meat. 👍
The free extra: crispy fried chicken gizzards
While we waited for our order, they brought out crispy, delicious fried chicken gizzards as a free starter.

Even though it was free, the portion was generous. Freshly fried, it was crispy outside and crunchy-chewy inside. Dipped in the savory powder that came with it, it made a great little snack to enjoy between bites of chicken galbi.
How thick Ondogye's chicken galbi looks off the first sear

The moment the pre-grilled chicken galbi arrived, the thickness stood out. This wasn't thinly spread-out meat — the pieces were plump and substantial, holding their own presence on the grill.
Grilled once more over charcoal, nice grill marks formed on the outside while the inside stayed moist and tender. Even though it was thick, it wasn't tough, and it had a clean flavor with none of the usual chicken gaminess. Each order came out as two servings on a wooden board, and the portion was bigger than it looked — with several menus on the table together it made for a pretty filling meal.
Chicken galbi with real charcoal smoke in every bite

With staff grilling right at the table, even the thick chicken galbi came out cooked perfectly without burning. The charcoal-browned outside was slightly chewy, while the inside kept its juices, moist and tender.

There was almost no gamey smell to the chicken, so the salt-grilled version let you enjoy the clean, savory flavor on its own. Eating it plain was great, but adding kimchi or shredded scallion gave it a different flavor entirely, and dipping it in the accompanying sauce brought out even more savoriness.
Spicy sauce chicken galbi and chewy chicken neck meat

On the charcoal grill, the sauce on the seasoned chicken galbi caramelized slightly, bringing out a sweet-spicy flavor with a big burst of smokiness. It looked like it would be intensely spicy from the deep red color, but it wasn't as spicy or salty as expected, and the meat inside stayed moist and tender. This seasoned chicken galbi really hit the spot for our kid — she ate two whole bowls of rice. 😄

And as expected, the chicken thigh meat was the tastiest to my palate. Compared to regular chicken galbi, the texture was firmer and chewier, giving it a satisfying bite. Since it's salt-grilled, no sauce masks the flavor, so you get the full charcoal aroma and savory chicken taste straight through — it was the most memorable dish even after trying several menus. This alley had noticeably more customers than the others, and after eating here myself, I understood why. This was a charcoal chicken galbi place with solid fundamentals. Next time I come back, I think I'll order the chicken thigh meat first without a second thought. 🩷
