Mokdong gopchang restaurant with grilled scallion kimchi: Omokgyo
In short
Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch is a gopchang (grilled beef small intestine) restaurant with a 30-year history, tucked into an alley near Omokgyo Station in Yangcheon, Seoul, and its signature dish is traditional handmade garlic gopchang with a whole Seosan six-clove garlic clove tucked into each piece. At a group dinner at Omokgyo Gopchang, we shared garlic gopchang and hwangso (bull) gopchang, grilled scallion kimchi on the hot plate, and a full pan of fried rice, then finished with bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles) and dongchimi guksu (radish water kimchi noodles). Verdict: the grilled scallion kimchi and the fried rice pressed crisp to the bottom of the pan were as memorable as the garlic gopchang itself.

A group gathering — why Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch
Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch is a gopchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant near Omokgyo Station that could satisfy everyone in the group at once — some wanted gopchang, some wanted good fried rice. Since it had been a while since we'd all gathered, we spent a while deciding where to go.

Someone wanted gopchang, someone else wanted a place with great fried rice too. That's how we landed on Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch. I was curious about the handmade garlic gopchang, said to be made with a whole clove of Seosan six-clove garlic stuffed into each piece. Bottom line: the garlic gopchang was memorable, but the combination of grilled scallion kimchi and the fried rice ended up being even better than expected.
Parking and what we ordered at Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch
The alley in front of Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch is narrow, so if you're driving, it's better to use a recommended parking lot rather than trying to park right outside. It's about a 5–7 minute walk from the lot to the restaurant.
Since there were several of us, we ordered both garlic gopchang and hwangso gopchang, and made sure to try the finishing dishes properly too.
Exterior and interior atmosphere of Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch
Walking from Omokgyo Station, a red sign appears down the alley. It was more visible than I expected, so we didn't get lost.
There was an event notice on the table, so we took a quick look. It would be a shame to notice this kind of thing too late, so anyone interested should check it in advance.
An interior with 30 years of history
Once inside, every round table was buzzing with conversation, so the atmosphere was pretty lively. It felt better suited to a chatty group meal or a work dinner than a quiet meal.
Looking around the walls, I started to understand why garlic gopchang was their signature dish.

Reading about the ingredients and prep process made me look forward to the gopchang even more.

Since the recipe has been passed down through the family, the restaurant is full of long history throughout. The tables are close together, but moving around didn't feel cramped.
There was even a self-photo booth, which seemed like a fun spot for a picture before or after the meal. Overall the decor wasn't overdone — a comfortable place for a drink. Once we sat down, we all started getting properly hungry.
Basic side dishes at Omokgyo Gopchang: from liver and tripe to handmade scallion kimchi
As soon as we sat down at Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch, liver, tripe, long scallion kimchi, and chive salad arrived. Our chopsticks naturally went for the liver and tripe first — dipped lightly in sesame oil sauce, it had a savory, crunchy texture.
The long scallion kimchi looked different from what I usually see at gopchang restaurants, so it caught my eye right away. We tried it plain at first, then grilled it on the pan later — the flavor changed completely.

The chive salad had a fresh aroma and crisp texture that paired well with the savory gopchang. Even before the gopchang was cooked, we kept picking at the side dishes, and the empty plates piled up quickly.
Two sauces were provided: a spicy special sauce and a savory sesame oil sauce.

Dipping the tripe in sesame oil sauce brought out its clean flavor and crunchy texture even more.
The menu board and what to order at Omokgyo Gopchang

After going over the menu for a while, we agreed not to skip the signature dish. We considered just ordering garlic gopchang, but ordering hwangso gopchang alongside it let us compare and appreciate each one's charm more.
A spicy sundubu broth before the gopchang arrives
While the grill was being set up at Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch, a stone pot of broth was already simmering, so I tried a spoonful first. The first taste was sharp and spicy, with a savory finish that warmed me up right away.
There were big chunks of sundubu (soft tofu) inside, and as we all scooped a piece each, the pot was nearly empty before the gopchang even arrived.
A grill piled high with garlic and hwangso gopchang, plus a fire show
On the large grill at Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch, gopchang was piled generously with onion, potato, chives, and bean sprouts. While waiting for it to cook, we noticed the wall also had detailed information about the garlic gopchang.
After the gopchang went on, a dramatic fire show followed as the flames shot up. For a moment the whole grill lit up and the table's energy picked up even more. Seeing it up close was flashier than expected, so we put our chopsticks down for a second just to watch.
As the gopchang started sizzling, a savory smell spread across the table. The bean sprouts and chives underneath soaked up the gopchang fat and looked delicious. The potatoes cooked slowly at the edges, turning golden outside and fluffy inside — great to pick at between bites of gopchang.
After flipping it a few times as it cooked, a nice color developed on the surface. Once we were told it was ready, everyone's chopsticks moved at once.
The hwangso gopchang was slightly crispy outside and chewy inside, with the fat inside spreading a rich, savory flavor the more you chewed.
Which sauce makes Omokgyo Gopchang taste best
The gopchang at Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch tastes different depending on whether you use the special spicy sauce or the sesame oil sauce. It was nice alternating — a few pieces in sesame oil sauce first, then the spicy sauce.

Dipping it in the special spicy sauce added a tangy, spicy note that freshened up the palate.

Eating sweet, caramelized onion together with the gopchang was also a great combination.

Adding fragrant chives made the gopchang's savory flavor feel even cleaner.

Once grilled on the pan, the scallion kimchi's spiciness softened and its sweetness and umami came through. A pinch of salt on the sesame oil sauce let the gopchang's natural savory flavor shine through cleanly.

We enjoyed the first few pieces in sesame oil sauce to appreciate the gopchang's own flavor. Then adding the spicy sauce revived our appetite. Having two sauces made switching back and forth part of the fun.
Garlic gopchang and grilled scallion kimchi — how did they work together
The most impressive combination was the traditional handmade garlic gopchang at Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch — each piece stuffed with a whole Seosan six-clove garlic clove — paired with scallion kimchi grilled golden on the pan. Topping the gopchang with chives and onion brought together savory flavor and crisp texture in one bite.
My personal favorite combination was eating it together with grilled chives. The golden-grilled scallion kimchi was sweet on its own, and paired well with the special sauce too.
Biting into the garlic gopchang, the rich savoriness of the gopchang was followed by the sweetness of cooked garlic. I liked that the garlic aroma wasn't too strong, so it didn't overpower the gopchang's flavor.

The potatoes, soaked in gopchang fat, were golden outside and fluffy inside — a great side treat. The scallion kimchi's sweetness was much more pronounced grilled than eaten raw.
Topping a piece of garlic gopchang with scallion kimchi brought a tangy note after the savoriness, naturally cutting through any richness.
Crisping up the Omokgyo fried rice platter
We ordered the signature Omokgyo fried rice platter at Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch after we'd mostly finished the gopchang. It came out with spicy fried rice in the middle, surrounded by a ring of soft beaten egg.

Adding scallion kimchi in between bites of fried rice brought out even more umami.

The fried rice was better eaten after waiting a bit rather than right away. The egg at the edges softly set and a crispy sound started coming from the bottom of the rice. Eating it together with the egg softened the fried rice's spiciness.
Bibim guksu or dongchimi noodles — which is better
For the finishing noodles at Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch, I'd recommend the Omokgyo bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles) if you want something spicy, or the dongchimi noodles if you prefer something cool and clean.
Spicy and tangy Omokgyo bibim guksu
The bibim guksu came generously topped with cucumber, egg, and crispy garlic chips. The seasoning was spicy and tangy, and the crisp cucumber and garlic chips added varied texture.
Mixing the noodles and toppings well before eating, the spicy-tangy sauce cleaned up the palate. After the gopchang, it felt even more refreshing than usual.
Cool and clean dongchimi noodles
The dongchimi noodles looked refreshing, with clear broth holding cucumber and dongchimi radish. The mild, tangy broth paired well with the cold noodles.
Fried rice gone as crispy as bap-jeon
While we were busy with the noodles, the bottom of the Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch fried rice had turned golden and crisp, like bap-jeon (a pan-fried rice cake).

The richness of Korean beef tallow and the umami of the kimchi were deeply soaked into every grain of rice. Scraping the bottom layer with a spoon, it was as crisp as bap-jeon — even full, we kept reaching for more.

The signature dish at Omokgyo Gopchang has reportedly been featured on SBS's Saeng Bangsong Today twice.
