Daejeon Korean restaurant for galbitang: Hanppong in Dunsan-dong
In short
Hanppong is a Korean restaurant near the academy district in Dunsan-dong, Seo, Daejeon, serving gamjatang as well as galbitang and doganitang. I had the latter two at weekday lunch and liked the clear broth, tender beef, and generous doganitang fillings; the spacious tables and high chairs also made it seem suitable for family meals.

While looking for a hot soup dish in Dunsan-dong, Daejeon, I visited Hanppong (한뽕). It specializes in gamjatang (pork bone soup), but also serves galbitang and doganitang, so I ordered both. That day, I was craving a mild broth rather than something spicy.

Where is Hanppong, and what was weekday lunch like?
The restaurant is on the first floor at 27 Dunsan-ro 74beon-gil, Seo-gu, Daejeon. It was on a side street near the academy district, and the smell of broth greeted me as soon as I walked in.

I arrived on a weekday afternoon before the break time and found a seat easily. The interior was neat, with fairly generous spacing between tables. I also saw quite a few customers ordering takeout during my meal.

What did I order, and what were the side dishes like?
Along with gamjatang, the menu had galbitang, doganitang, and several other meal options. I chose the galbitang and doganitang.

Not long after ordering, kimchi, kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), and seasoned vegetable side dishes arrived first. They were neatly served, and to my taste, mildly seasoned and clean-tasting.

How were the galbitang and doganitang in flavor and portion?
The galbitang came in a ttukbaegi (earthenware pot), filled with large ribs and plenty of meat. The meat was boiled until tender, making it easy to remove from the bone.

The broth was not overly strong, with a savory yet clean flavor. There was no unpleasant smell from the meat. What stood out about the doganitang was its generous amount of solid ingredients.

Would it work for a family meal or group gathering?
The owner and staff were kind. Group dining is available, and there was plenty of space between tables. With high chairs, Wi-Fi, and simple payment options, it also seemed suitable for family meals or work gatherings.

For this meal, I liked the galbitang's clear broth and tender meat, as well as the doganitang's generous fillings. It is a place I would think of when wanting a warm bowl of soup near the Dunsan-dong academy district.

What hours should you check before visiting?
According to the original post, the listed hours are 10:50–20:30, with a break time from 15:00–17:00 and last order at 20:10. However, it also says both “open daily” and “closed every Sunday,” so it is necessary to check Sunday operation before visiting.
