The writer visited around 1 p.m. the day before the Daejeon bread festival and found the shelves nearly empty, but still tried the 2,500-won salt bread, the crispy signature salt bread, a cream cheese blueberry baguette, madeleines and a matcha latte. Thanks to its deeply buttery salt bread and a baguette as nutty as nurungji (scorched rice), anc. Tanbang is a strong pick for a Daejeon bread tour.

Daejeon inari sushi shop: 10 to go, egg and crab win at Kitsune Yubu

Kitsune Yubu Daejeon Dunsan is an inari sushi (rice in seasoned tofu pouches) restaurant on Dunsan-ro in Seo-gu, Daejeon, near City Hall Station. The writer often ate alone at Kitsune Yubu and took out 10 pieces for the first time, trying beef yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), creamy shrimp, Bulldak mayo, egg, tuna and crab stick, and named egg and crab stick as favorites. Two or three Kitsune Yubu inari sushi make a filling meal, which makes it good value for solo dining and takeout alike.

Cold salmon soba lunch at a Daejeon Japanese restaurant: Choi Dining

Choi Dining Daejeon Gwanpyeong is a Japanese restaurant on Gwandeul4-gil in Gwanpyeong-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. Eating alone, the writer ordered cold salmon soba and yukhoe (raw beef) futomaki, 5 pieces for 14,900 won: the aged salmon tasted clean with no fishiness, and the futomaki was packed with egg, fried shrimp, yukhoe, cucumber, pickled radish and burdock. For a summer lunch, the cold soba and futomaki pairing at Choi Dining Gwanpyeong is well worth ordering.
