A 50-year-tradition monkfish stew on Wirye-seong-gil by Olympic Park

Ttoksuni Agujjim Jamsil Direct Branch (똑순이아구찜 잠실 직영점) is a monkfish stew (agujjim) restaurant on Wirye-seong-gil, near Gate 3 South of Olympic Park. Olympic Park is huge, and the stretch by Gate 3 South used to have lots of long-running restaurants, but one by one they disappeared. There was a Pizza Hut back when Pizza Hut was booming, but it's gone~ There was a VIPS back when they were opening everywhere, but that's gone too. I loved VIPS, so I was really sad to see it go..

So when I heard a 50-year-tradition monkfish stew place had opened on a street like this, I had to go! Word was it had already become famous as an Olympic Park go-to, so off I ran to Ttoksuni!

Ttoksuni menu and prices: what we ordered

Ttoksuni menu and price list

You order at Ttoksuni with a kiosk, and we ordered the Ttoksuni agujjim, large (3 servings), spice level 2 original flavor (about Shin Ramyun level), for ₩62,000.

According to the notice in the restaurant about the benefits of monkfish, it's low in fat and high in protein, rich in vitamins A1, B1 and C, and the gills, fins, tail and flesh each have their own flavor, so nothing goes to waste. It's described as strengthening the stomach and intestines, an alkaline food rich in protein, iron, calcium, phosphorus and minerals, good for lowering blood pressure, detoxing and boosting stamina, and the collagen in the skin is said to be good for the skin too.

The hand-made flavor of a 50-year Korean cuisine master / Ttoksuni Agujjim delivers a deep flavor proven by time. / Today, too, we serve you not just a meal, but a memory.

I love warm phrases like this. I think each one of them is part of what makes you remember a restaurant.

How were the basic side dishes at Ttoksuni?

The basic banchan (side dishes) at Ttoksuni included chili fritters (gochu-bugak), perilla seaweed soup, and seaweed vinegar salad. They gathered everything we love haha

  • Chili fritters (gochu-bugak): I hadn't had them in ages and they were seriously so good!
  • Perilla seaweed soup: Very strongly seasoned, but it goes really well with the monkfish stew
  • Seaweed vinegar salad: Fresh and tangy, the kind you keep reaching for

Large monkfish stew (3 servings): how many people does it feed?

We were told the large Ttoksuni agujjim is 3 servings, but to us it looked like enough for 4–5 people. Wow! I was genuinely shocked.

If you can't decide between monkfish stew and seafood stew, this video might help.

A monkfish stew piled high! One look and you can tell it's different from an ordinary agujjim.

Monkfish flesh and bean sprout texture

This look makes my mouth water! Let's dig in! I lift up a piece of monkfish. It has real weight. The monkfish is plump!

Besides the flesh, I don't know the names of the other parts, but they were really chewy, springy and great in texture. The bean sprouts were plump too! If the sprouts feel a bit tough or the monkfish pieces feel too big, they give you scissors too, so you can cut them.

Sauce-coated monkfish and bean sprouts

When I split the monkfish with chopsticks, the milky white flesh showed up like this. It goes so well with the sauce! Another table ordered the seafood stew for 2, and their bowl was a mountain too haha.
