Hapjeong kaisendon plus 4,000-won sea bream sashimi: Makise Hapjeong
In short
Makise Hapjeong is a kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) restaurant in a quiet alley within a 10-minute walk of Hapjeong Station Exit 8 in Mapo, Seoul. From a bar seat the writer ordered the 20,000-won kaisendon and the 4,000-won today's sashimi, which was sea bream that day, spooning fish and wasabi over the rice like build-your-own sushi, and the nutty ankimo (monkfish liver) stood out most. Both the portion and the atmosphere made it a satisfying solo meal.

Today I went to 'Makise' in Hapjeong. Maybe it's because the weather's been so cool and clear lately, but I've been craving seafood lately? (Is it just me?) I had plans in Hapjeong anyway, so I decided to look for a kaisendon spot and ended up at 'Makise'!

Solo dining! First time eating alone in Hapjeong, and the vibe was great haha

Where is Makise Hapjeong, and how far from Hapjeong Station Exit 8?
Makise is tucked into a quiet alley in Hapjeong, less than 10 minutes from Hapjeong Station Exit 8.

I love eel rice bowls and sashimi rice bowls, and this place looked the cleanest and most solo-dining-friendly, so I picked it. The moment I arrived, I knew I'd made the right choice!

Ordering at the bar seats and Makise Hapjeong menu prices
I sat at the bar seats first and ordered. You just look at the menu and tell the owner directly — done! The table seats have a kiosk, but the bar seats don't, so you just speak to the owner right in front of you haha

This was the menu! I ordered the 'kaisendon' for ₩20,000 and 'today's sashimi' for ₩4,000. (Ordered like a pro, even solo)
+ The fried menu here reportedly gets great reviews too. If I'd had company, I definitely would have ordered it... but looking at how big the fried dish looked, I figured I couldn't finish it alone, so I skipped it. Such a shame, ugh.

Inside Makise Hapjeong: seating and atmosphere for solo diners
There were only about 5 tables in the back, so the interior wasn't huge, but turnover was quick and tables cleared out fast. The interior atmosphere was exactly my style, which made it even better! Comfortable, quiet, and perfect for solo dining haha

The service was great too — my hair is on the longer side, and they gave me a hair tie so I could eat comfortably haha. Something for the ladies to keep in mind~

As soon as the pickled radish and soy sauce were set on the table, the broth came out right away.

The 20,000-won kaisendon and how to eat it as build-your-own sushi
And then the 'kaisendon' arrived right away! I'd really been craving seafood haha

It was a gorgeous-looking kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) with assorted sashimi, rolled egg, ankimo (monkfish liver) and wasabi all piled on top of the rice. * The ankimo was seriously savory and rich, so delicious.

The fish clearly looked fresh, right? They said you just put wasabi and sashimi on top of the rice, like sushi, and eat it that way. Sushi you scoop up yourself! Sushi made exactly your way!

I also loved that I could adjust the rice portion however I liked! Now let's take a look at the sushi I made lol (admiring time)

Sashimi thickness, ankimo and whether the portion is filling
First of all, all the sashimi cuts were thick and hefty, so they filled my mouth and tasted even better for it! I mentioned 'ankimo' above — it was great piled on the sushi, but it was also great saved aside and mixed into the rice separately. I kept joking they should just make an ankimo rice bowl on its own lol. Totally my style. (The sashimi was great, but surprisingly, the ankimo was genuinely the best part.)
With so many varieties, there was fun in picking and choosing too! Honestly, I thought the portion might be a little small at first, but once I started eating, it was not small at all. (So stuffed (▰˘◡˘▰))

Is the 4,000-won sea bream sashimi add-on worth it?
And then there was the side order, 'today's sashimi' — sea bream! I ate it plain and also made it into sushi, enjoying it every way I could haha
It had been a while since I ate solo, and it was such a satisfying meal, my mood was the best! The owner was also really kind and a little funny lol (overall, very satisfied). I've been on a solo-dining mission around Hapjeong lately, and this was a really satisfying meal. Now I get to happily wonder what to eat next time><
Bottom line! For sushi in Hapjeong, it's Makise( •̀∀•́ )✧
