Gimbap restaurant near Ujangsan Station with side dish bar: Uwol

In short

Uwol Gimbap (우월김밥) is a newly opened gimbap and bunsik (Korean casual snack food) restaurant near Ujangsan Station in Gangseo, Seoul. The writer ordered aged kimchi tuna gimbap, ttukbaegi bulgogi (bulgogi in a stone pot), and pork cutlet, tried the self-serve side dish bar and soup station, and found the side dishes as varied as a full Korean home-style meal with a generous half-rice, half-cutlet portion. Recommended for anyone near Ujangsan Station looking for a filling bunsik meal.

I was craving bunsik (Korean casual snack food) and gimbap today, so I went to a newly opened gimbap and bunsik spot near Ujangsan Station called Uwol Gimbap~

Spacious and clean inside

At this Ujangsan gimbap and bunsik spot, the interior was super clean. From the outside it looked like a small bunsik place, but once I went in it was actually spacious with quite a lot of tables, which I liked.

From gimbap to rice bowls, stews, and pork cutlet

The menu at this Ujangsan gimbap and bunsik spot 'Uwol Gimbap' was really varied by category — gimbap included both regular and keto gimbap, and there was also nothing missing between rice bowls, stews, pork cutlet, ramyeon, and tteokbokki.

Self-serve side dish bar

A side dish bar on the level of a home-style restaurant

You could take as much of the basic side dishes as you wanted from the self-serve bar, and I was pleasantly surprised at how varied they were. At most bunsik places the side dishes are mostly just kimchi and pickled radish, but here there were anchovies, stuffed cucumber kimchi, seasoned black beans, and even kimchi pancake — as varied as a full home-style meal, which was one of Uwol Gimbap's strengths.

We just grabbed a simple plate like this, and the kimchi pancake seemed freshly made because it was warm, which made it even tastier.

There was soup ready in an electric pot next to the kiosk, and you could add as much scallion as you wanted.

I was torn between this and wasabi tuna mayo gimbap, but ended up ordering the aged kimchi tuna mayo gimbap!

Cross-section of gimbap packed with tuna and aged kimchi

The egg was thin but generously packed in, and the tuna and aged kimchi were both piled in too, giving it a rich flavor and great texture. We don't eat cucumber so we asked for it to be left out, but note that it's included by default!!!

Ttukbaegi bulgogi (bulgogi in a stone pot)

While deciding what to eat, the ttukbaegi bulgogi caught my eye! It looked and smelled better than expected, so I was already looking forward to it before even tasting it.

There were plenty of vegetables too — onion, carrot, cabbage — and plenty of glass noodles, which I liked.

I tried it with meat and glass noodles piled on top, and the meat wasn't tough — it was soft, so it was easy and delicious to eat~ There was also rice cake in it, which made the meal even more filling.

Mixing rice into the bulgogi broth

I ate for a while then mixed the rice into the broth, and I would have regretted it if I hadn't. The finish of the broth was clean with a slight kick, so delicious, and it was even better with a bit of kimchi on the side.

Plate of pork cutlet served with rice

Pork cutlet: half rice, half cutlet

The pork cutlet came with way more rice and cutlet than expected, so I was surprised the moment it arrived (it really was half cutlet, half rice!)

Salad drizzled with black sesame dressing
Pork cutlet sauce served on the side

The salad was drizzled with black sesame dressing, which was nutty and delicious! It also cut through the greasiness of the fried cutlet nicely in between bites.

I also really liked that the sauce was served separately, and when they brought the cutlet out, they said to let them know if we needed more sauce or rice haha.

Cross-section of crispy old-style pork cutlet breading

Would I go back?

Since it's the dip-style cutlet, the breading was really crispy, and the thin-pounded meat had that nostalgic old-school pork cutlet flavor. I had been disappointed that there weren't many bunsik places near Ujangsan Station, so I'm so glad a good one has opened up nearby haha. The food is tasty and the owner is friendly, so I think I'll be visiting often~
