Gwangju Cheomdan Chinese restaurant solo meal plus tangsuyuk: Mayway
In short
Mayway is a Chinese restaurant in the Cheomdan area of Gwangsan, Gwangju, reopened as a renewal of Daehong Banjeom, a long-known Gwangju Chinese restaurant. Mayway's set meal for one puts jjajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce), jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) on a single plate, and an extra order of tangsuyuk came with a crisp coating and thick meat that was neither gamey nor chewy. With a self-serve side dish corner, unlimited rice refills and free ice cream at the end, Mayway lets a solo diner taste all three Chinese-restaurant classics in one sitting.

I've been craving Chinese food nonstop lately, and I almost just ordered delivery, but you know Chinese food is always best eaten in the restaurant, right? So while looking for a good Chinese spot in Cheomdan, I found Mayway, which has been hot on social media lately!
Mayway is a renewed spot from Daehong Restaurant, a well-known Chinese restaurant in Gwangju, and the sweet and sour pork here is seriously delicious!!!!!!!!!!!! If you love Chinese food, this is the number one Chinese restaurant in Gwangju you absolutely have to visit — let me introduce it now. Whether you're after a lunch spot, dinner spot, or drinking snack spot, Mayway is a must-visit!

Mayway Gwangju Cheomdan is located near Cheomdan Lotte Mart. You can park near the restaurant. The storefront is very visible even from a distance.

Can you eat alone at Mayway? Yes, there is a set meal for one
Mayway is great for solo dining too. Why? Because they have a 1-person set meal!! You get jjajangmyeon, sweet and sour pork, and jjamppong all on one plate, so even eating alone you can try a bit of everything — such a great setup. Places like this aren't easy to find, so I'm so glad one opened in Cheomdan, Gwangju.
Inside Mayway: interior and seating

The restaurant is spacious with lots of tables and generous spacing between them, so you can eat comfortably.
Mayway menu and how to order by QR code

At Mayway Gwangju Cheomdan, you check the menu and order via the QR code on the table. There's a solo menu, various Chinese dishes, and an impressive lineup of hearty meals and cooked dishes like webfoot octopus platter jjajang. I ordered the 1-person set meal and extra sweet and sour pork.
Self-serve side dish corner and unlimited rice refills

Mayway, a Chinese restaurant favorite in Cheomdan, Gwangju, has a self-serve side dish corner where you can grab more of whatever you run out of — and they even had green onion kimchi!!! Jjajangmyeon with green onion kimchi is the best combo!! Plus unlimited rice refills, so it's really two birds with one stone.
Basic side dishes and the fried starter before the meal

They bring out the basic side dishes first.

Then they bring a fried snack to enjoy before the meal, and it was warm and crispy, seriously delicious!

Mayway's set meal for one: jjajangmyeon, jjamppong and tangsuyuk on one plate
And then the 1-person set meal arrived!!! Domestic sweet and sour pork, spicy jjamppong, and sweet jjajangmyeon — isn't that three-color combo just great?

The portions were totally generous!!!! This quality, three kinds of food, at this price these days — love it.

The first thing I was curious about was the sweet and sour pork, and I tried it... wow, best sweet and sour pork of my life. The batter was insane and the meat was so thick, and above all the sauce was amazing.

Then there's the spicy jjamppong that cuts right through the richness

and the soft, tender jjajangmyeon — getting all three Chinese restaurant favorites on one plate like this is so good.

Ordering extra tangsuyuk: sauce poured over and sauce on the side
On top of that, I ordered extra sweet and sour pork separately, and that was a very good decision.

After eating the sweet and sour pork from the set meal, I wanted more since it was so good, so ordering extra gave me a truly generous portion.

The sauce comes on the side, so it's good whether you like it poured on (bumeok) or dipped (jjikmeok).

The meat is seriously thick!! No gamey taste at all and no chewy bits, just pure deliciousness!!!!!! Wait, can a Chinese restaurant really be this good? Now I know why it's so hot these days.... I heard the wait at lunch at Mayway is crazy, and now I get it!! So delicious. Really, truly delicious!
What to order next at Mayway, and the free ice cream to finish
The regular menu items looked delicious too, so next time I want to try the webfoot octopus hot stone jjajang! Webfoot octopus jjajang served on a hot stone plate!!!!!! I also saw seafood nurungji soup (crispy rice soup) being eaten at the next table and it looked amazing!
And at the end, they even gave us free ice cream, finishing the meal on a refreshing note!!! Living up to its reputation as a famous Chinese restaurant in Gwangju, it was truly a clean and delicious Chinese restaurant! If you love Chinese food, you have to come to Mayway Gwangju Cheomdan!
