Two-table bakery café in Marine City, Busan: salt bread at Zoblack

In short

Zoblack is a salt bread bakery café on Marine City 1-ro in Haeundae-gu, Busan, open daily from 10:00 to 20:00. A regular visitor ate a freshly baked plain salt bread with a glass of warm milk in the shop, then took home a Basque cheesecake and a lemon madeleine. With only two tables and outlets under the seats, Zoblack is a quiet Marine City hideout for reading over bread.

This post was written after receiving a discount through Superchart and using the store. At the same time, I should mention that Zoblack is a place I visit regularly on my own, so I've written honestly about my own five-senses experience there.

One afternoon, today's discovery is Zoblack, a Marine City bakery café with delicious salt bread.

Finding Zoblack in Marine City: storefront and interior

Zoblack, a salt bread spot hidden in Marine City, has a secretive air even from the outside. I'm a regular there, actually. The first time I searched for nearby cafés and went, I was standing right in front of it and still looked around confused, not realizing it was even a café.

The dark oak wood interior feels partly like a traditional tailor shop, and partly like a bar serving strong whiskey.

How many kinds of salt bread does Zoblack bake?

Zoblack's salt bread lineup starts with the basic version and just keeps going. I think every salt bread in the world exists here.

  • Red bean butter salt bread
  • Glutinous rice cake salt bread

And there's also matcha tigre, earl grey tigre, tiger cookies, vanilla bean Basque cheesecake, earl grey Basque cheesecake, and lemon madeleine.

Freshly baked plain salt bread with warm milk

I order warm milk and salt bread at Zoblack and settle into a seat. The cup holder has that heavy, high-end feel that fits the name Zoblack perfectly. It even feels good in the hand.

Salt bread pairs well with coffee, but it goes just as well with milk. I happened to visit right as the basic salt bread came out fresh. I was going to get it to go, but I sat down instead and ate it right out of the oven.

Snow-white salt on top, a savory butter smell rising up — salt bread. How fitting that it's literally named salt bread. Direct and no-nonsense naming.

The baby at the next table and her salt bread

A mom and her young child sat at the next table. When the baby said they wanted salt bread, the mom tore off a small piece and held it out. The baby said "I'll do it myself," took the bread, and carefully pulled it apart along the grain.

Pulling it apart by hand along the grain is where the fun of eating salt bread really begins, mom — that baby knows a thing or two. Hehe.

A Marine City hideout for reading alone

Sipping warm milk with the delicious, still-warm salt bread, I pull out Eun Hee-kyung's novel 『The Texture of Time』, a book I've missed reading for a while.

Setting the plot aside, there are sentences here that heal you just by reading them, sentences that let a cool breeze blow through your heart. Eun Hee-kyung's writing always has that kind of freshness.

Takeout from Zoblack: Basque cheesecake and lemon madeleine

After spending a while in quiet solitude, I head home. Basque cheesecake for my mom, who loves it, lemon madeleine for my sister, who loves that, and warm salt bread for me, the one I love. I buy an armful and head home.
