Quiet Mangwon café in Seoul: black latte & pistachio tiramisu, PICT
In short
PICT Roastery Mangwon Branch is a roastery dessert café in the semi-basement of a red-brick building on World Cup-ro 23-gil in Mangwon-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul. After missing lunch on a weekday afternoon, the writer had PICT Roastery's signature black latte with hazelnut and macadamia and a pistachio tiramisu, saving the signature aged French toast, which takes 20 minutes, for next time. Quiet and cool, PICT Roastery Mangwon is a café you'll want to make your regular hideout.

A weekday afternoon with lunch missed, off to PICT Roastery in Mangwon
I missed lunch today. Instead of a meal, I went looking to fill up on coffee and something sweet, and headed to PICT Roastery, a dessert spot people rave about in Mangwon-dong.
It's been way too hot lately, and seeing the standing sign outside written in a very serious font that said "power air conditioning," I found myself wanting to taste the power AC just as much as the coffee and dessert.

PICT Roastery Mangwon Branch is in a semi-basement, and even from outside you can tell it's cute — a red-brick building with charming white lettering and illustrations. Turns out PICT Roastery also has a branch in Magongnaru, not just Mangwon? How did they know I live in Magongnaru! Having two of my own neighborhoods show up already gave me an inflated sense of closeness with this place.

Looking for a quiet café in Mangwon-dong?
The interior of PICT Roastery Mangwon Branch has a vintage feel while somehow also being super clean at the same time. The squared-off, orderly layout felt comfortable. Coming on a weekday afternoon, it was quiet enough that it seemed great for working or reading.
Actually, I'd come a few days earlier too, but the desserts were sold out that day so I just left — there were quite a lot of people then. But even so, the inside of the café was pretty quiet relative to the number of people. If you're looking for a quiet café in Mangwon-dong, I'd recommend PICT Roastery.

PICT Roastery's menu and three kinds of beans
Here's the PICT Roastery menu. Today I ordered the black latte, a menu item I'd been curious about, and since I heard PICT is also great with brighter, acidic coffees, I definitely want to try an americano with more acidity next time. Besides coffee, the tea and other beverage options also looked like solid choices. I'm also curious about the Kyoto matcha latte, a new item from the Mangwon branch.

True to being a roastery, PICT handles everything in-house, from roasting the green beans to extraction. There are three kinds of beans.

You can choose based on your taste: the Midnight Cacao Blend, with the nutty flavor Korean drinkers tend to love; the Aricha Bouquet Blend, known for its floral acidity; and the Brazil Cerrado Decaf.

Semi-basement window seats, seen from a stray cat's eye view
That alley vibe you can only feel in a Mangwon-dong semi-basement! It was 36 degrees outside, but I was so comfortable in here — how happy is that~~~

There are plenty of seats looking out onto the street, so you can sip your coffee from the eye level of a passing stray cat.

The restroom is inside the shop, and it's kept very clean.

What does the black latte taste like? A signature with hazelnut and macadamia
My order arrived — the black latte and the pistachio tiramisu.

Sitting in a cool, comfortable café on such a hot day, with an iced black latte and a sweet pistachio tiramisu — what a feeling!

Apparently the black latte has hazelnut and macadamia in it. Maybe that's why it's so nutty and rich. There's almost none of coffee's usual bitterness, and it's not overly sweet either, so it goes down easy, sip after sip.

Black as its name promises! I feel like it's been a while since I've had such a genuinely delicious signature coffee.
Pistachio tiramisu: why I picked it over the French toast

The pistachio tiramisu has this soft pistachio cream that makes you want to shovel a piece straight into your mouth right away. Honestly, I originally wanted the signature aged French toast. But I was told it takes about 20 minutes, and as a busy small-business owner myself, I switched my order to the pistachio tiramisu instead.

The dense yet soft cream tasted like real pistachio, not an artificial flavor! It had just the right amount of subtle sweetness, and the sponge part was moist — a textbook-perfect tiramisu. It's a great dessert to share one between two people.

It was so sweet and delicious that I had a hard time pacing myself eating it slowly. Mangwon-dong seems to have a lot of cafés, but it's hard to find one that just feels like exactly the right spot. I think PICT Roastery Mangwon Branch definitely has that charm that makes someone want to claim it as their own hideout. (It might become mine, too..!)
