How to Start English Readers for Middle and High School Students Without the Pressure
People say that one important approach to learning English is, in the end, repeatedly encountering sentences you can understand. While trying various English readers for middle and high school students with my children, I had been wondering which books would feel least intimidating to them.
Dangye English The Old Man and the Sea, which I came across this time, is structured as a series designed for learners, so I felt that even children who are resistant to English could begin naturally. What I liked most was the structure that has readers revisit the same content at different levels.
Even when my child came across an unfamiliar word, they said, “I kind of get it because it’s something I read earlier.” This felt like the natural exposure that is at the heart of English reading comprehension. In particular, Dangye English also offers audiobook listening, so I liked that it could cover both reading and listening practice for middle and high school students at once.

How Do the Sentences Change From LEVEL 1 to 3?
My child and I compared the sentences from the first chapter, and it was very clear how the vocabulary level and grammatical structure change at each stage.
LEVEL 1, the easiest version
He was an old fisherman. He caught nothing for 84 days. The sentences are very short, with repeated subject + verb structures. Even the number is simply written as the numeral “84.” → It was perfect as an introduction to English readers for middle school students.
LEVEL 2, expanded foundational sentences
He had not caught a fish for eighty-four days. The past perfect (had + past participle) appears, raising the grammar difficulty. The object “a fish” is added, making the sentence more natural. → It feels like moving from middle school English study into high school English study.
LEVEL 3, fully formed English-reader sentences
He was an old man who fished alone in the sea. He had been empty-handed for eighty-four days. The relative pronoun “who” appears, expanding the sentence. “Had been empty-handed” is a more advanced past-perfect expression. The modifier “alone in the sea” is added. → The sentences have the natural flow of English readers for high school students.

Reading the Original Sentences Again After Dangye English
The Old Man and the Sea is a work full of famous lines, and after repeating the graded Dangye English version, the original sentences moved me even more strongly when I looked at them again.
- 1) “A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” A person may be destroyed, but not defeated. → It lingered with us enough that my child and I briefly talked about one’s attitude toward life.
- 2) “But man is not made for defeat.” A person is not born to be defeated. → A sentence that concentrates the old man’s solitude, will, and indomitable spirit.
3) “Every day is a new day.” Every day is a new day. → I told my child, too, “Even if you make a mistake, a new day begins again.” After reading through the story level by level, I think seeing the original sentences gives you an experience where that feeling is doubled.
Did My Child Feel Less Intimidated by English Readers?
My child had felt a little intimidated by English, but LEVEL 1 is made up of truly short sentences, easy words, and plenty of illustrations, so they were the first to say, “I think I can read this!” And because the structure naturally continues into LEVEL 2 and 3, a major strength is that it connects not only to an introduction to English readers for middle school students, but also to the beginning of high school English study.
