Yeonnam-dong Japanese rice bowl date: hire katsu-don, Jongno Donburi
In short
Jongno Donburi Yeonnam is a Japanese rice bowl (donburi) restaurant on basement level 1 in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo, Seoul. The writer visited with her husband and ordered mix katsu-don at 13,500 won and hire katsu-don at 14,500 won, choosing a soft-boiled egg for one and a hard-boiled egg for the other, and the sauce was neither sweet nor salty enough to cover the pork cutlet and shrimp tempura. Jongno Donburi Yeonnam, a Japanese restaurant in Yeonnam-dong, is a great katsu-don spot for a date.

When you're on a date in Yeonnam-dong, sometimes you want something lighter than a heavy meal — a Japanese restaurant where you can eat cleanly in one sitting. This time we went to Jongno Donburi Yeonnam.

It's mainly a Japanese-style rice bowl place, and after eating there myself, both the menu and the interior were pretty satisfying. It seemed like a good stop for a solid meal in the middle of a Yeonnam-dong alley date, before heading on to a café.
01. A basement room with a clean, cozy feel
Jongno Donburi Yeonnam's interior was much nicer than I expected, which was impressive.

Overall it was clean and cozy — the kind of place where you can focus comfortably on your meal rather than a loud, bustling restaurant. That means it's fine to visit alone, but it also worked well for sitting across from each other and chatting as a couple. If you're planning a Yeonnam-dong date, the vibe of the place you eat at matters quite a bit.

When an overly formal restaurant feels like too much but a too-casual spot feels lacking, this hit exactly the right note.

02. What the two of us ordered
That day we ordered mix katsu-don for 13,500 won and hire katsu-don for 14,500 won.

When ordering katsu-don, you can also choose your egg doneness — soft-boiled or hard-boiled — which was a nice touch since you can order to your taste. My husband picked soft-boiled for the mix katsu-don, and I picked hard-boiled for the hire katsu-don!
03. Mix katsu-don with shrimp tempura on top, 13,500 won

We tried the mix katsu-don first. As the name suggests, mix katsu-don comes with both pork cutlet and shrimp tempura on top, and the shrimp was bigger than expected, making the whole bowl look quite generous.

The pork cutlet was crispy outside and tender inside, with no dry, chewy feel when you bit into it. The shrimp tempura's batter wasn't too thick, and the shrimp inside was plump, giving it a nice texture.

Above all, the overall flavor was very clean. The rice bowl sauce wasn't too sweet or too salty, so it didn't cover up the taste of the cutlet and shrimp tempura, and it went well together when eaten with the rice.

Bursting the soft-boiled egg and mixing it in adds the egg's mild richness to the sauce, making the whole bowl even more moist and enjoyable.
04. Hire katsu-don, light and tender, 14,500 won
Another dish I really enjoyed was the hire katsu-don.

Hire katsu (pork tenderloin cutlet) has less fat than the loin cut and has that clean, lean meat flavor, so it should be especially good for people who like a light pork cutlet. I'm the type who always orders hire cutlet, haha.

Eating it, the meat wasn't tough at all — it was tender and easy to chew without feeling heavy. With the savory flavor of the cutlet itself plus the sweetish rice bowl sauce, onion, and egg, the overall taste was soft and comforting.

Personally, I prefer this style where the ingredients' flavors come through cleanly rather than a heavily seasoned rice bowl, so this really suited me.

05. Why Jongno Donburi Yeonnam works for a Yeonnam-dong date
Eating at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam, it wasn't just the food — the staff were kind too, which made for a pleasant meal.

They handled our order comfortably, and the service felt thoughtful overall. Adding that on top, it seemed like a good spot for a Yeonnam-dong date as well. Yeonnam-dong has so many good restaurants that it's often hard to decide where to go, but Jongno Donburi made choosing easy and gave us a satisfying, filling meal.
06. When you want a clean Japanese rice bowl in Yeonnam-dong
Having visited myself, Jongno Donburi Yeonnam seems well suited to people who prefer a clean, light style of donburi over a bold, punchy flavor.
The mix katsu-don lets you enjoy crispy pork cutlet and plump shrimp tempura together, while the hire katsu-don really let the light, tender flavor of the cutlet shine. Choosing the soft-boiled egg in particular makes the bowl feel much more moist, as the runny egg blends with the sauce.

The vibe was clean and the staff were kind, so it also works well for a relaxed meal with friends, and it's plenty recommendable as a meal spot for a Yeonnam-dong date. If you're looking for a Japanese restaurant in Yeonnam-dong or a spot to add to your Yeonnam-dong date course, give Jongno Donburi Yeonnam a try. I enjoyed it so much I'd like to come back and try their other donburi menus one by one. A place worth remembering as a Japanese restaurant in Yeonnam-dong for whenever you're craving a clean rice bowl — highly recommend!
