Bacon carbonara pasta, weekend lunch in Yeonnam-dong: Hôtel de Couture

In short

Hôtel de Couture is a pasta and Western-style restaurant in Yeonnam-dong, a short walk inland from Hongik University Station in Seoul. Three friends came for a weekend lunch to hand out wedding invitations and ordered extra bread, egg in hell, jambon risotto, steak and bacon carbonara pasta, and the bacon carbonara was the best of the lot. Weekend lunch can't be reserved at Hôtel de Couture, so expect a wait, but the room feels special enough to treat guests properly.

One thing that's oddly stressful when planning a wedding is figuring out where to meet friends to hand over the wedding invitations. It's a relaxed get-together, but since it's the day you're giving out invitations, you end up wanting somewhere a little nicer than your usual lunch spot. This time, three of us went to Hôtel de Couture in Yeonnam-dong.

To cut to the conclusion first: the food overall was solid, but what really made it feel like I was properly treating my friends for the wedding invitation gathering was how pretty the space itself was.

Where is Hôtel de Couture, and how far is the walk from Hongik University Station?

Hôtel de Couture is a bit of a walk inland from Hongik University Station. It's not right by the exit, so if you don't feel like walking, taking a bus works fine, and on a nice day like this, I'd also recommend just strolling through Yeonnam-dong to get there.

Even the exterior stood out, with a vibe that's a bit different from your typical restaurant.

When I visited, there were a lot of foreign customers too. We came on a weekend for lunch, and there was a wait. Since it was a wedding invitation gathering, we'd tried to book ahead, but weekend lunch reservations aren't possible, so I was a little anxious — but a table opened up faster than expected, and after a short wait we were able to get seated.

Inside Hôtel de Couture: why the room suits a wedding invitation gathering

Once inside, the warm-toned interior, the arched entryway, and even the little decorative touches on the walls made the space feel quite pretty. It's not a stiffly formal restaurant vibe, but it's not fully casual either, which made it just right for a wedding invitation gathering.

It had that nice ambience, if that's the right way to put it — exactly the pastel tones I love, dressed up nicely with a bit of greenery. For a wedding invitation gathering especially, whether you can actually talk comfortably matters a lot. There were quite a few people around, but it wasn't as loud as I expected, and the tables were spaced well enough that the three of us could chat without feeling cramped.

Handing over invitations and catching up tends to stretch the meal out, and for gatherings like this, atmosphere matters just as much as the food. Personally, meeting here felt like a step up from a plain meal — it gave off more of a proper-treat feeling, and I liked that.

What three people ordered at Hôtel de Couture, and were the portions enough?

We ordered extra bread, egg in hell, jambon risotto, steak, and bacon carbonara pasta.

None of the individual dishes were huge, stuff-yourself portions, but with two fairly big guys at the table, I wouldn't call them small either. We left feeling comfortably full, haha.

Honestly, I was really curious about the carrot oil pasta, but since this was a wedding invitation gathering with the guys, I had to save the carrot oil pasta for another visit. :(

The best dish: bacon carbonara pasta

Out of everything we ordered, my personal favorite was the bacon carbonara. Even from the photos you can tell it's loaded with bacon, and the sauce had a nice, thick texture. We shared a bunch of different dishes, but this one suited my taste the most. I finally understood why reviews call this place a pasta must-visit. Lol.

That said, we also ordered the egg in hell, jambon risotto, and steak, and cleared every single one, so it's hard to really rank one dish above the others, haha.

One drawback at Hôtel de Couture: the seat right under the air conditioner

Overall I was happy with the food and the atmosphere, but there was one thing that bugged me. My seat happened to be directly in front of the air conditioner. With the cold air blowing on me the whole time, I felt a bit chilly, and I noticed the food seemed to cool down faster than it would at other tables. Since we'd ordered several dishes that really need to be eaten warm to taste their best, this part was a bit of a letdown. If you get cold easily, it might be worth checking where the AC is when you're seated.

Ordering was done via QR code right at the table, which was convenient. If you wanted to add something, you could just order it whenever, without having to flag down staff.

Is Hôtel de Couture a good spot for a wedding invitation gathering in Yeonnam-dong?

You do need to factor in the walk from Hongik University Station and the possibility of a wait since weekend lunch reservations aren't available, but the atmosphere was pretty, it wasn't too noisy even with a crowd, and the table spacing was comfortable. Most of all, I wanted the invitation-handoff meal to feel a little more special than usual, like a proper treat — and on that front, I was satisfied. Even if it's not for a wedding invitation gathering next time, I'd come back here on a day I want good food with a bit of atmosphere. :)
