Weekend shabu-shabu lunch with kids in Mapo, Seoul: Okjoban Gongdeok

In short

Okjoban Gongdeok Station Branch is a shabu-shabu and Japanese restaurant on the first floor of Hyosung Harrington Square by Gongdeok Station in Mapo, Seoul. On a weekend lunch with the kids, the writer ordered the chuck flap shabu-shabu set with unlimited vegetables and a porridge finish, then added gake soba and bunmoja (chewy glass-noodle balls); staff carried the broth, side dishes and vegetables to the table instead of running a salad bar, so the conversation never stopped. Reservations are essential at Okjoban on weekends, and it is a family gathering spot worth returning to.

On a weekend lunch, I went with the kids to Okjoban Gongdeok Station Branch, well known as a gathering spot near Gongdeok Station. I'd booked ahead through Naver, and good thing too — the place was already full, being weekend lunchtime. If I hadn't reserved, I would have faced a long wait. If you're planning a weekend visit, booking ahead isn't optional, it's essential. Unlike your typical all-you-can-eat spot, the interior has a calm, upscale restaurant atmosphere, which made it a great place for a gathering with friends or a family meal.

Full table service that makes you feel taken care of

The biggest reason I felt Okjoban nailed both value and the feel-good factor this visit was the service style. Usually at all-you-can-eat shabu-shabu places, you have to keep walking back and forth to a salad bar for vegetables and side dishes, which breaks up the conversation and gets tiring. But here, you just sit at your table and staff keep bringing broth, side dishes and vegetables without you ever running short. Being served directly like that made for a really comfortable meal, and I'd highly recommend it as a gathering spot. The meat, too, is pulled from the kitchen fridge and sliced by machine the moment you order it, so it looked visibly fresh and had none of that gamey smell — genuinely delicious.

Unlimited vegetables and bunmoja glass noodles, and why we ordered more

Fresh unlimited vegetables and the crowd-favorite glass noodles

The freshness of the vegetables was excellent too. Staff kept checking our table and kindly refilled vegetables until we were full, so we could enjoy them as much as we wanted. The well-cooked green onions in particular, soaked in the sweetness of the meat broth, were so good I kept reaching for more. And the restaurant's specialty, glass noodles (bunmoja), was a massive hit with my family. Dipped generously in the nutty sesame sauce, the chewy, springy texture was such a great combination that we ended up ordering an extra portion.

What's in the shabu-shabu set, plus a summer side of gake soba

A menu combination perfect for whetting the appetite in summer

Our group ordered the chuck flap shabu-shabu cut with unlimited vegetables, and the set that includes porridge for dessert. On top of that, we added a cold gake soba to cool off from the summer heat. In the sweltering weather, a cool, clean broth really hit the spot — a great choice for waking up the appetite before the main course.

Did the kids eat it? Chuck flap and gake soba with children

Shabu-shabu and cold soba together won the kids over completely

I was really pleased that the kids ate the tender shabu-shabu meat and vegetables cooked in the clear broth without any fuss. They usually struggle with chewy meat, but the thin, fresh chuck flap here was so soft and tender that it suited their taste too. On top of that, the cold gake soba we'd added for the hot weather was also a huge hit with the kids. The clean yet savory cold broth and the chewy soba noodles must have been right up their alley, because watching them slurp down every last bit of the noodles made me really proud as a parent. From the main shabu-shabu to the refreshing side dish, the whole family could enjoy it heartily without any pickiness, making it an excellent choice for a weekend family meal.

Finishing the meal: porridge or kalguksu, and which we chose

A thoughtful dessert makes for a satisfying finish

Dessert is really the finishing touch of a shabu-shabu meal. We chose porridge over kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), and staff cooked it themselves right there with real care. Loaded with egg and seaweed flakes, it had a nutty, savory-salty depth that was excellent. It wasn't overpowering and was soft enough to make for a hearty, perfect finish to the meal. Getting to enjoy a quality meal while feeling genuinely taken care of in such a comfortable atmosphere means I'll be back without hesitation for our next Gongdeok gathering.
